05/27 - Williams leaves Chesapeake for WCAC job

Reggie Williams, the former Georgetown University star and NBA veteran, has resigned as Chesapeake College head men’s basketball coach to accept the head coaching position at Archbishop Carroll High in Washington, D. C. Williams is leaving Chesapeake after one season for the opportunity to coach his son, Riyan, a rising junior at Carroll. Williams said he is excited about both coaching his son and competing in the highly regarded Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. "The WCAC is one of the top-ranked conferences in the country," said Williams. "They (the Lions) didn’t have that good a record last year (11-19), but they are competing in a league with teams like DeMatha, Gonzaga, and St. John’s. They have a lot of kids back and I think we’ll be competitive." Williams was hired last October after legendary Skipjack head coach John Mappas resigned right before the start of fall practice. Williams cobbled together a team that was better than its 6-16 record, according to Chesapeake Athletic Director Frank Szymanski. "Reggie was able to come in literally at a moment’s notice and had the team going in the right direction until the semester break," said Szymanski. "We lost a buzzer-beater and a double-overtime game in his first couple of weeks on the job, and just couldn’t get over the hump." Williams, who played 10 NBA seasons for six teams, expected to be head coach at Towson Catholic High School last year. Towson Catholic, however, abruptly closed its doors due to financial reasons, making Williams available after Mappas’ departure. Despite the challenges, Williams said he enjoyed his season coaching in the Maryland Junior College Athletic Conference with the Skipjacks. "It was a really great experience," said Williams. "I enjoyed coaching the guys and I learned a lot about JuCo." Chesapeake has already started a coaching search and expects to quickly name a new head coach, according to Szymanski. "We have some impressive candidates identified, and expect to come out of the search with an outstanding coach," said Szymanski. The Skipjacks netted only 17 wins over the past two seasons, but posted winning seasons six times in seven years starting in 2001-2002. The program has won at least 20 games three times since 2003, including a school-record 27 wins in 2007-2008. Chesapeake went to consecutive Region XX finals in 2007 and 2008, winning the region crown in its second title-game appearance. "We intend to rebuild the program back to where it was a few years ago," said Szymanski. -- chesapeake.edu
