03/24 - Handy picked for All-Region first team

Arcadia's Trae Handy has been selected to the All-Region A Boys' Basketball team. Handy, who helped lead his Arcadia team to the Eastern Shore District regular season and district tournament championships, is a first team member of the All-Region team. No other player from the district made the All-Region team. Handy had previously been a first team member of the All-District team and Player of the Year in the district. Handy, a junior, was a playmaker on the Arcadia squad. A point guard by position, he could shoot the long 3-pointer or drive inside the paint against much taller players. Handy knew how to use his quickness to drive opposing defenses crazy. And on defense, Handy started many of the Firebirds' transition baskets by making a key steal. "He's the most valuable player in the district," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis during the season. It would seem the coaches in the district and region would agree. -- delmarvanow.com

03/10 - All District team named

Arcadia's Trae Handy has been named Player of the Year in the Eastern Shore District. Handy, a junior point guard, helped lead the Firebirds to the Eastern Shore District regular season championship and the district tournament championship. One of the smallest players in the district, Handy had the biggest impacts on the game. His quickness and agility made him a dangerous offensive players in the district. "He's so quick he can drive the lane," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis. "But if you drop off him, he'll drop a 3 on you." As much as his offensive ability meant to the Firebirds, Handy's defensive ability disrupted every team the Firebirds played this season. He intercepted passes and stole the ball off the dribble. Handy was a quarterback on the floor, handling pressure defensives thrown at him. "The best thing for us is Trae will be back next season," said Justice. As a matter of fact, the Firebirds had no seniors this season. Joining Handy on the All-Distict first team this season were senior Chris Edwards of Northampton, senior Jeff Locklear of Nandua, junior Johnny Tarr of Chincoteague, and junior Terry Ballard of Arcadia. Edwards gave his Northampton team an inside presence and could also shoot the baseline 3-pointers. A fierce rebounder, Edwards will be tough to replace in the Jackets' front court. Locklear came on strong at the end of the season to lead the Warriors in the district tournament and in regional play. Tarr emerged this season as the Ponies' main scoring threat. He led his team in scoring and put on a show with his driving layups. Ballard owned the paint area. Playing center for the Firebirds, Ballard collected more than his share of rebounds and blocked shots. On the second team this season were Northampton's Ian Brady and Ryheem McCall, Nandua's Divontriq Crippen and Marcus Mapp, Arcadia's Bernard Beckett and Chincoteauge's Chase Haugh. Gaining honorable mention on the All-District team were Deshan West and Charles Baines of Arcadia, Charles Mapp of Nandua, Chris Romer of Chincoteague and Zaveonta Upshur of Northampton. The All-district squad was selected by coaches Alvin Justis of Arcadia, Jay Savage of Chincoteague, Luke Brankley of Nandua and Michael Brickhouse of Northampton.

03/03 - Firebirds fall to Middlesex in semifinals

Arcadia made just 5 of 17 free throws in a five-point loss to Middlesex in the Region A semifinals. The Firebirds matched Middlesex basket for basket, but fell short on the free throw line where the Chargers converted 14 of 17 shots. Middlesex started the game on fire on the offensive end and opened a double digit lead in the second quarter. The Chargers continued to lead by double digits until the fourth quarter when Arcadia showed signs of life on the offensive end of the court. "I thought we played good defense," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis. "We didn't hit out shots in the first half, but we did when it counted in the fourth quarter." But even in the fourth quarter the Firebirds could not convert free throws. The Firebirds converted just 2 of 6 free throws in the final period. Trailing by 10 points entering the final quarter, the Firebirds opened the final frame with back-to-back 3-pointers by Bernard Beckett and Deshawn West. Beckett scored the final three baskets of the game for the Firebirds, his final two-pointer with four seconds left in the game cut the Middlesex lead to just three points. But Middlesex's Ryheem Lockley converted two free throws with three seconds left to seal the game for the Chargers. Bernard Beckett led the Firebirds with 18 points, followed by Terry Ballard with 17 points and Deshawn West with 12 points. Ballard had 20 rebounds, several in the fourth quarter, but made just 3-of-11 free throws. Cody Hunter led Middlesex with 15 points, followed by Jeremiah Morris with 14, Ryheem Lockley with 12 and Michael Bess with 10 points. "We didn't make our free throws and that's something we work on all the time," said Justis. "But we have everybody back next year." "We've had a good year." Arcadia won the Eastern Shore District regular season championship and the Eastern Shore District Boys Basketball Tournament this year.

02/24 - Arcadia adds another title

Arcadia proved to be the master of the Eastern Shore District boys' basketball this season with Saturday's championship in the Eastern Shore District boys' Basketball Tournament. The Firebirds, already the champions of the regular season, added the tournament championship Saturday with a 71-68 victory over Northampton. The Firebirds survived a rough start and poor free throw shooting, then held on at the end to outlast a torrid Northampton rally. The Firebirds also had to overcome a couple of players lost to grades at the semester break. "Somebody had to step up," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis. "They all knew that." Step up the Firebirds did. Bernard Beckett scored 25 points for Arcadia, including five 3-pointers from the baseline. Terry Ballard scored 18 points and Trae Handy ran the Firebird offense and scored 12 points. Zaveontei Upsher scored 16 points to pace the Yellow Jackets. Raheem McCall scored 15 points and Chris Edwards had 10 points. Jamel Bennett, a newcomer to the squad, scored nine points. Handy was the key performer for the Firebirds. The smallest player on the Arcadia team used his quickness to grab rebounds surrounded by taller players and make drives to the basket. "If they drop off him, he'll shoot the three," said Justis. "Without a doubt he's the most valuable player in the district this season." Arcadia will have a bye in the first round of the Region A playoffs that begin this week. The Firebirds will host a second round game, probably on Friday night.

02/03 - Jackets come from behind to beat Ponies

The same two teams that will be meeting in the Eastern Shore District's season ending district tournament met last week in a wild game that saw lead changes and three starting players fouled out. Northampton had to come from behind to record a 52-46 victory over Chincoteague. Crystal Chavous scored 24 points to lead the Yellow Jackets. Tameka Giddens scored 10 points for Northampton, including a game-high three 3-pointers. Victoria Whealton led the Ponies with 20 points. The Ponies had a strong start in the game with Whealton scoring five points in the first quarter and 11 points in the second quarter. At halftime the Ponies held a 23-15 lead. The Yellow Jackets grabbed the momentum in the third quarter with Chavous leading the way with 12 of her team's 14 points in the period. Liz Hipple paced the Ponies in the period with nine points. In the fourth period three Chincoteague starters fouled out of the game. Starters Whealton, Hipple and Alyssa Behr could only sit on the bench and watch as Northampton took the lead. 01/30 - Jackets score twice in a week

Playing at home the Northampton Yellow Jackets posted a pair of wins this week, topping Windsor, 73-33, and recording an Eastern Shore District win over Chincoteague, 78-39. Zaveonta Upshur led the Yellow Jackets with 14 points in the game against Windsor. Raheem McCall scored 13 points for Northampton. Ian Brady had a bad shooting night for the Jackets and was 0-for-5 from outside until the final seconds of the game. Brady unleashed a three-quarters-length shot that caught nothing but net as time expired in the game. "He shot it just like he would a shorter shot," said Northampton head coach Michael Brickhouse. Wednesday night the Jackets posted a win over Chincoteague with Chris Edwards leading the way with 14 points. Brady had 13 points, including four 3-pointers, all from a few feet outside the 3-point arch. Ronte Coston and Jamar Harmon had nine points each for the Jackets. Johnny Tarr led the Ponies with 18 points. Chase Haugh scored 16 points. Nandua will host Northampton on Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. A win by the Jackets would clinch second place in the Eastern Shore District. A loss would tie the two teams for second place.

01/27 - Arcadia wins championship

Arcadia clinched the Eastern Shore District boys basketball championship Friday night with a big win over Chincoteague. The Firebirds were on a mission and topped the Ponies, 85-42, to move to 5-0 in the district standings. With only one district game left for the Firebirds, neither Northampton nor Nandua can catch the Firebirds. Arcadia opened the game with a 9-2 run. Trae Handy scored the first points of the game with a three-point play and ran off Arcadia's first seven points. The high pressure Arcadia defense forced seven Chincoteague turnovers in the second quarter as the Firebirds extended their lead. Arcadia ran off the first 11 points of the third quarter to take total control of the game. Bernard Beckett hit back-to-back 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter. Avery Guillard came through with 12 points in the final frame, including a two-hand jam in the final minute to put an exclamation point on the game for the Firebirds. Gillard led the Firebirds in the game with 21 points. Beckett scored 17 and Handy had 16, while Deshawn hit double figures with 10 points. Johnny Tarr led the Ponies with 20 points, followed by Chase Haugh with 18 points. The win gave the Firebirds the regular season district title and the top seed in the upcoming district tournament. "I don't know if the tournament is going to be held in one day or two," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis. "But we're going to be home either way." This year a pre-season Kickoff Tournament was held, but games did not count in the district standings. Nandua won the pre-season tournament. Games in a post-season tournament will probably not count either, since Arcadia has already locked up a regional berth with the district title.

01/20 - Arcadia boys stay on top

The Arcadia Firebirds strengthened their grip on first place in the Eastern Shore District's boys' basketball race with a 55-50 victory over Northampton on Saturday afternoon. Arcadia used a pressure defense again to move to 3-0 in district play and put down a surging Yellow Jacket team that was coming off a big win over Nandua. Arcadia's Trey Handy, one of the smallest starters on the court, had the biggest impact on the game. Handy scored 17 points for the Firebirds, mostly on driving layups in the middle of taller players from Nandua. Arcadia leaper Avery Gillard scored 15 points. Chris Edwards led the Jackets with 13 points, followed by D'Quan Lyons with 11 points. "Defense is the key," said Arcadia head coach Alvin Justis. noting that of his eight players, there are six juniors and one sophomore, Justis said, "We're still a work in progress." Tavon Ames led the Warriors with 10 points, followed by Jeff Locklear with nine points. Locklear and Wesley Marsh had one 3-point basket each for the Warriors. Nandua won the district's Kickoff Tournament with an overtime victory over Arcadia and a win over defending district champion Northampton in the title game. In years when Friday night basketball was played there was standing room only and people turned away at the door because of capacity crowds. But now Arcadia has won big over Northampton and Arcadia and takes over first place with a record of 2-0. Nandua fell to 1-1 in district play. Northampton is 2-1, while Chincoteague is 0-3.

01/09 - Jackets win second game

Northampton opened its 2010 schedule Wednesday night with a 58-29 victory over the homestanding Ponies. It was the second time this season the Jackets have recorded a district win over Chincoteague and the third time overall, as the Jackets posted a win over the Ponies in the pre-season Eastern Shore District Kickoff Tournament. The game was a series of streaks with the Jackets opening the game with a 9-0 run. Ian Brady's 3-pointer with just over two minutes left in the first quarter put the Jackets up by nine. Chincoteague's Johnny Tarr scored a layup with 1:40 left in the quarter that proved to be the Ponies' only score of the first period. Northampton closed out the first period with two free throws by Jamar Harmon, a basket by Charles Hall and a basket at the buzzer by Harmon that gave Northampton a 15-2 first quarter lead. Chincoteague stepped up the defensive pressure in the second quarter resulting in eight Northampton turnovers. Northampton did not score the first seven minutes of the second frame and Chincoteague ran off 10 unanswered points. Tarr had seven points during the run, including a 3-pointer. Northampton closed out the first half with two free throws by D'Quan Lyons and a basket with two seconds left by Zevonte Upshur to take a 20-12 halftime lead. Northampton emerged from the halftime with a more determined effort, out-scoring the Ponies 21-3. Chincoteague had eight turnovers in the quarter and just one field goal. Upshur had a free throw and a three-point play at the beginning of the quarter, Lyons had back-to-back baskets in the middle of the period and Harmon had five points in the quarter, inducing a 3-pointer. The big third quarter gave the Jackets a commanding lead. In the final stanza, both teams played run-and-gun basketball with a lot of action on both ends of the court. Harmon led the Jackets with 11 points, followed by Chris Edwards with nine and Chris Collins and Upshur with eight points each. Tarr led the Ponies with a game-high 13 points. "We really need to get back on track," said Michael Brickhouse, head coach of the Jackets. "I was just glad to get a 'W'." Brickhouse, whose team finished in the state playoffs last year, lost some key players to graduation, but returns starters Brady and Edwards to this year's squad. Nandua and Arcadia will play today in Oak Hall. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.

Firebirds 61, Jackets 42

Arcadia opened the game on a 12-2 run and recorded a convincing, 61-42 win over Northampton in this district opener for both teams. The Firebirds displayed a quick team in the Kickoff Tournament last weekend and used that quickness to get off clear shots against the Northampton defense and knock off the defending district champions. Head coach Alvin Justis' crew opened the game with a flurry of baskets to wrestle control of the game early. Trae Handy and Terry Ballard led the Firebirds with 14 points each. Bernard Beckett scored 12 points and Deshawn West came off the bench to score 10 points. Chris Edwards led Northampton with 16 points. Coach Justis said he was disappointed with his team's loss to Nandua in the Kickoff Tournament last weekend. "I told the team we were not going to play like that again," said Justis. "They took it to heart and I took it to heart." Arcadia will be in the Pocomoke Christmas Tournament Dec. 28-29, taking on Pocomoke on the first day and Snow Hill on the second day. -- delmarvanow.com

12/16 - Warriors rally past Jackets for title

Nandua rallied past defending Eastern Shore District champion Northampton Saturday to capture the championship of the inaugural Eastern Shore District Boys Basketball Kickoff Tournament, held Saturday at Nandua High School. The Warriors did it the hard way, surviving an overtime game against Arcadia in the first round, then coming from behind in the championship game against Northampton to capture the tournament championship. Northampton defeated Chincoteague in the first round.

Warriors 51, Jackets 46

Nandua overcame a six-point fourth quarter deficit to register a 51-46 victory over Northampton in the tournament championship game. Trailing by six points at the start of the final frame, Nandua's Nathan Hale nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter to spark a Warrior comeback. Northampton managed to stay in front on baskets by Charles Hall and Tyler Tankard. A 3-pointer by Hall gave the Jackets a 42-37 lead with 4:29 left in the game. The Warriors, however, mounted a 12-0 run to take the lead, starting with a basket by Tavon Ames, followed by two free throws by Charles Mapp. Ames' basket with 1:56 left in the game gave Nandua a 43-42 lead. Ames followed with another basket, then Lashaun Bagwell completed a three-point play to give the Warriors a six-point lead with just under a minute left in the game. The two teams traded free throws, then Ian Brady hit a long 3-pointer with just five seconds left in the game to trim the Warrior lead to three points. But with 2.3 seconds left in the contest, Mapp sank a pair of free throws to seal the win. This was the first district action for Nandua's new head coach Luke Brankley. He continues to be the beneficiary of advice from former head coach Buck Boggs, who sat on the end of the Warriors' bench throughout the tournament. "I like it better down here," said Boggs, who has two state championship teams to his credit at Nandua.

12/12 - District kickoff tourney is today

Eastern Shore District basketball, both girls and boys, gets under way today with the District Kickoff Tournaments. The girls' tournament will be held at Chincoteague High School and the boys' tournament will be held at Nandua High School. In all, three games will be played in each of the two venues. The first game will get under way at 9 a.m., followed by another game at 10:30 and the two winning teams will meet at 1 p.m. for the championship game. District teams, Arcadia, Chincoteague, Nandua and Northampton, will play in each tournament. Last season Nandua won the girls' district championship and Northampton won the boys title. The tournaments will give an early indication of how the district race may unfold. Games played in the Kickoff Tournament will not count in the district standings. Also, the district will not have a season-ending tournament this season. For the past several seasons the end of season tournament has not determined which team will represent the district in the Region A tournament. Coaches were more frustrated than anything else by a meaningless tournament that meant nothing. So, the early season tournament will be played today. The winning team in both the girls and boys tournaments will win a trophy. -- delmarvanow.com

03/03 - Jackets clinch playoff berth

The Northampton Yellow Jackets clinched a state playoff berth Thursday night with a victory over Nandua in the Region A semifinals. The win sent the Jackets into the regional championship game against top-ranked Lancaster. Lancaster defeated the Jackets to win the region. Both Northampton and Lancaster will represent Region A in the state playoffs that begin this week.

Jackets top Nandua

Northampton continued to play well in the post-season, recording a 50-41 victory over Eastern Shore District champion Nandua in the Region A semifinals. Tymera Smith scored 20 points and Crystal Chavous scored 19 as Northampton rolled over host Nandua. Nandua defeated Northampton three times during the regular season, two during the season and once in a pre-season tournament, but lost to the Yellow Jackets in the district tournament final and now in the regional semifinal. Bre Evans and Chassity Ferry led Nandua with 14 points each. Northampton got off to a fast start in the regional semifinal, out-scoring the homestanding Warriors 16-2 in the opening quarter. "That was our plan," said Northampton head coach Leo Owens. "We wanted to take an early lead and force Nandua to play from behind. I would rather lose the lead than have to battle from behind." Zakia Sample had a pair of 3-pointers for the Jackets in the opening period, while Chavous scored eight points. Nandua came back the second quarter to cut into the Yellow Jacket lead. Bre Evans had eight points, including a 3-pointer and Chassity Ferry had five points in the frame. An Evans layup at the 4:59 mark of the quarter cut the Northampton lead to just five points, but the Yellow Jackets hit two quick baskets, then Te'Quayu Giddens nailed a 3-pointer with 2:09 left in the half to boost the Jackets' lead back up to 12 points, 27-15. Nandua closed out the half with a couple of free throws and a basket by Whitney Davis to cut the Northampton lead to eight points at halftime. But in a slow-paced third quarter, both teams struggled to find the basket. Ferry and Davis started the fourth quarter with a strong inside performance for the Warriors. A 3-pointer by Ferry at the 3:54 mark of the quarter cut the Northampton lead to just four points. However, the Jackets went on a 7-2 run, sparked by a three-point play by Chavous to recapture momentum. Although Evans had a three-point play for the Warriors, a basket by Ferry with 55 seconds left in the game ended Nandua's scoring. Northampton didn't make many free throws in the final 1:12 of the game, but had built enough lead to withstand the Warrior challenge. The win sent the Jackets into the Region A championship game against Lancaster, and clinched a state playoff berth for Northampton. The loss ended the season for the district champion Warriors. Northampton was the district tournament champion this season.

01/27 - Nandua clinches title with 5-0 clean sweep

Nandua clinched the 2009-10 girls Eastern Shore District basketball championship Saturday afternoon with an exciting 58-56 win over Northampton. The win gives the Warriors a 5-0 district record and the top seed in the district tournament which follows the regular season. Breanna Evans scored 18 points to lead the Warriors. Chassity Ferry and Whitney Davis had big games for the Warriors, producing points from the paint. Ferry finished with 11 points, while Davis had nine points for the home team. Tymeka Smith led the Yellow Jackets with 22 points, followed by Crystal Chavous with 17 points. Nandua held an eight-point lead after the first period with Evans scoring eight points in the first frame. Northampton cut the deficit to just two points at halftime as Chavous and Smith started finding their range. Chavous had seven points in the second quarter, while Smith had five. Northampton rallied into the lead with a big third quarter with Smith sparking the uprising with 10 points. Evans led the Warrior comeback with eight points in the final quarter, while Davis scored six points. The Warriors were 6-for-15 from the free throw line in the final period. The Jackets were 7-for-14 from the line in the final frame. For the game Nandua shot 13-for-29 from the line, while the Jackets were19-for-36. The two teams combined for 42 fouls in the game. One official stopped action in the fourth quarter to discuss the situation with a fan, he suspected of unsportsmanlike talk. When Nandua head coach Kim Giddens attempted to calm down the official, she was assessed a technical foul, much to the dislike of the home fans in the stands. It all added to an exciting time in Onley as the Jackets tried to stay alive in the district race, but the Warriors were able to prevail by the narrowest of margins.

01/23 - Warriors survive scare

The Eastern Shore District-leading Nandua Warriors survived a scare Tuesday night at Chincoteague. Bre Evans sank a pair of free throws with 5.6 seconds left in Tuesday's game to give the Warriors a 42-40 come-from-behind victory over the upstart Ponies. Evans, who only played about half the game, scored 21 points in the second half, including all 11 of her team's points in the critical fourth quarter. With Evans and Kaira Armstrong held out of the Warrors' starting lineup, Chincoteague claimed the early lead. Victoria Whealton and Liz Hipple paced the Ponies in the scoring side of the ledger, while Alyssa Behr came down with key rebounds. Evans and Armstong entered the game with about 6:40 left in the third quarter and had an instant impact on the game. Evans scored 10 points in the third quarter as the Warriors took a seven-point lead. But Chincoteague remained within striking distance and made steady gains in the fourth quarter with some full-length court passes and open layups by Whealton and Hipple. With under a minute to play Hipple hit a 3-pointer to give the Ponies the lead. Evans answered the baskets with a 3-pointer of her own. Late in the game the Ponies went up by two-points on a basket by Whealton. Once more, Evans answered the challenge with a basket to tie the score. The two teams were knotted at 40-40 in the final 16 seconds of the game. Evans was fouled as she drove in for a layup with 7.6 seconds left in the contest. After she converted both free throws, Chincoteague tried another full-court pass. Although there was an open player under the basket, the ball sailed over her head and the game ended with the Warriors winning a hard-earned two-point victory and keeping their undefeated district record. "The girls had two goals for this game," said Chincoteague head coach Kelly Fox. "They wanted to score at least 30 points and stay out of foul trouble." The Ponies met both goals by scoring 40 points and no player fouled out of the game.
