01/13 - SU's Palmer does the math: 978 + 22
Three years ago, Greg Palmer never would have seen himself in the scenario he is in now. As a freshman, the Salisbury University guard saw little time on the court, scoring only three points. Now, as a senior, Palmer is on the verge of scoring 1,000 points as the Sea Gulls play host to Capital Athletic Conference rival York tonight. Palmer stands just 22 points away from reaching the milestone. "When I first came here, I didn't play any minutes, so I didn't have any goals like that whatsoever," Palmer said. "Then my second year I ended up being fortunate to score a bunch of points. I thought about the math in my head, and I thought I'd have a chance to do it if I played my remaining two years." Prior to coming to SU in the fall of 2005, Palmer was a standout at Salisbury Christian School. During his senior year as a Jaguar, Palmer averaged 25.5 points a game, leading his team to its first Peninsula Athletic Christian Conference title. SU coach Steve Holmes first saw a 12-year-old Palmer in basketball camp and was fascinated by his perimeter shooting ability. "You could see Greg really shot the ball well and he liked to play and had a real good feel for the game," Holmes said. "When he got here as a freshman, he had good size [height-wise], but he was still thin and didn't have great endurance and strength yet. I knew it was going to take a little time for him to develop." Under Holmes' tutelage, Palmer learned help defense, boxing out and reading defenses on screen plays. "I feel like my first two years I learned something new every day in practice," Palmer said. But Palmer did not get the chance to put that knowledge to use much in his first year. He saw extremely limited action, playing just 21 minutes over eight games. Disappointed with his lack of playing time, the notion of leaving the team crossed his mind but quickly dissipated. "I would be really down on myself maybe after a game I really thought I was going to get in and it didn't just work out that way," Palmer said. "But (leaving) was never really a serious consideration." With the loss of two all-league guards, Palmer -- who worked on his strength over the year -- made the starting lineup his sophomore year and didn't disappoint. In 24 games, he scored 410 points, a 407-point improvement over his freshman total, and averaged 17.1 points a game. "We were challenging the sophomores and the returning players to step forward and take charge of the guard spots because they were open," Holmes said. "Greg stepped up, and it was easy to tell how hard he worked in the offseason." As a junior, Palmer scored 380 points and averaged 14.6 points. Now as a senior, Palmer is averaging 15.4 points. As for when ball drops through the rim for point No. 1,000, 1,001 or 1,002, Palmer knows what the best possible scenario would be: "A three-pointer would be nice," he said. "That's the foundation of my game, and it would be pretty fitting." -- delmarvanow.com
