| University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Princess Anne, MD 2009-2010 Men's Basketball News & Headlines March 2010 February 2010 02/22 - Hawk Talk Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) needed five assists to break Jesse Brooks' single season assist record for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and he recorded seven in the Hawks' 62-56 win over Bethune-Cookman Monday night in front of 2,479 at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Brooks' record of 142 assists was accomplished in the 2005-06 campaign and White had 138 coming into tonight's contest. White also scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds while registering two steals. UMES won their Homecoming game for the first time since 2002 with a 66-52 win over in-state rival Coppin State University (CSU). With the win, UMES improves to 7-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and moves to fourth place in the league. "This is a big win for our program," said Head Coach Frankie Allen. "We stressed that we hadn't won a Homecoming game in a long time and our guys took it upon themselves to make sure we not only got the win, but made a statement to our fans and alumni that this program is headed in the right direction." Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) had an all-around game for UMES, posting a game-high 13 rebounds while adding nine points, four assists, a block and a steal. Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) led UMES with 12 points while White chipped in 10 points and five assists. -- umeshawks.com 02/19 - Hawks brace for raucousness As part of a celebration of "Hawk Pride," current students and alumni of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore will look for homecoming week to end on a winning note. On Saturday, the UMES men's and women's basketball teams will play host to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Coppin State as part of a doubleheader. "With homecoming games, you always have your largest crowd of the year," UMES men's coach Frankie Allen said. "You hope that the crowd will be pretty raucous and that will rub off on the team." In the opening game, the UMES women (8-14, 5-7 MEAC) will look to end a three-game losing streak as they attempt to sweep the season series from the Coppin State. UMES won the first meeting 55-53, on Jan. 23. In the second game, the men's team (8-18, 6-6) looks to lift its conference record above .500 as they take on an Eagles team at the bottom of the conference. Despite Coppin State's 2-9 MEAC record, Allen said they are not the same team UMES beat 72-60 three weeks ago. “Coppin State has a good combination of pretty talented wing players and guards," he said. "They are a solid basketball team, and their record is not indicative of their play. They are a very balanced squad, and they don't just have one particular player you can key in on." Allen added that the key to victory Saturday will be on defense. "We've got to play solid on the defensive end," he said. "I think it will be a solid back-and-forth game offensively and we'll need to execute." -- delmarvanow.com 02/15 - Hawk Talk Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) registered his second double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team defeated North Carolina A&T, 62-52, Monday night at the Corbett Sports Center. "The way we played tonight was a great team effort," said Hines. "It feels good to come into someone else's house and beat them, especially on ESPNU." UMES wasn't able to control the paint as they lost, 73-71, to North Carolina Central University Wednesday night at McDougald-McLendon Gym. The Hawks were outscored, 36-20, in the paint and also outrebounded, 38-25. The Eagles registered 17 offensive rebounds to UMES' nine. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the Hawks in scoring with 16 points and added in four rebounds, two assists, one block and one steal. Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continues his stellar season of dishing out assists as he had seven on the night in addition to 10 points and four steals while Hines led UMES with seven rebounds. Florida A&M University (FAMU) shot over 60 percent from the floor at times on Saturday, and proved to be too strong as the Hawks fell, 80-71. Junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, NJ) scored a team high 17 points for the Hawks in defeat. With the loss UMES (7-18, 5-6) falls to below .500 in conference play. "I'm very disappointed with the way our defense played," said UMES head coach Frankie Allen. "We let (FAMU) have whatever shots they wanted, and we were never able to get back in the game as a result." -- umeshawks.com 02/08 - Hawk Talk Junior Kevin White (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 12 assists, but it wasn't enough to push the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team to victory as they lost, 79-65, to Hampton University Monday night at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. White's previous high in assists came on November 17, when he recorded 11 at Marquette. In addition to his 12 assists, he recorded nine points, four rebounds and one steal. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) led the team with 21 points and five rebounds while junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, N.J.) registered 16 points and three rebounds. A tip-in at the buzzer was ruled basket interference for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team as they fell, 64-62, to Norfolk State at Joe Echols Hall Saturday afternoon. The Spartans' Michael Deloach made a jumper with three seconds left in the game to pull NSU ahead, 64-62. After an in-bounds play and two timeouts for the Hawks, UMES had the ball underneath their own basket with 1.8 seconds left on the clock. Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) received the in-bounds pass in the paint and put up the lay-in as time expired. The basket was ruled as interference on the Hawks and therefore no good. Burns led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points and five assists. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) chipped in with 12 points and seven rebounds while Haley had 10 points and a career-high nine rebounds. -- umeshawks.com 02/01 - HALEY NAMED UMES ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) has been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore Athlete of the Week for the period ending Jan. 31. Haley, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound guard on the men's basketball team, led the Hawks to a 1-1 week. UMES fell to Morgan State, 91-54, on Jan. 25 before clipping Howard, 67-66, on Saturday. Haley was 11-of-17 from the floor against the Bison with a career-high 33 points. He also had a career seven 3-pointers to go along with five rebounds and one steal. He scored 23 of the Hawks' last 28 points in the win. UMES (6-14, 4-3) faces Hampton Monday at 7:30 p.m. -- umeshawks.com 02/01 - Hawk Talk Senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) recorded his second straight double-double as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team fell to Morgan State, 91-54, Monday night at the Hill Field House. Pitt scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and was joined by Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) in double-digit scoring, who had 11 points of his own. Haley went 7-for-10 from behind the arc and scored 33 points to lead the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's basketball team over Howard, 67-66, at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center Saturday. Haley's previous career-high in points was 22, which he scored at Marquette on November 17. He also broke his career highs in field goals with 11 (previous was eight, also at Marquette) and 3-pointers made with seven (previous was two, which he had done twice). -- umeshawks.com January 2010 01/20 - UMES ANNOUNCES 2010 ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CLASS The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Department of Athletics announced its 2010 Hall of Fame class today. The class, made up of five former Hawk greats will be enshrined on Homecoming weekend in a ceremony held, February 19, 2010 in the ballroom of the Student Services Center on the campus of UMES. Talvin Skinner, the Hawk that played in the NBA longer than any other, will be inducted for his individual play in men's basketball. Already inducted as part of the 1973-74 NIT Team, the first team from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to make the event, Skinner had many solo accomplishments in his playing days. He was a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Hall of Famer in 2002, was an all-conference selection in 72-73 & 73-74 as well as the MEAC Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer in 1974. He led his team in rebounding in his final two seasons, was the 1973 NAIA Tournament's leading rebounder, and totaled nearly 400 points and rebounds the same year. Skinner's final year saw him post 456 points and grab 353 boards. He still stands eighth all-time in NAIA rebounding. Skinner was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in 1974 in the third round. He was also an ABA draftee the same year by the New York Nets in the 5th round. He later became an assistant coach with the WNBA's Seattle Storm and was on the bench when they won the title in 2005. Rubeun Collins, also a member of the same NIT Team, will be inducted for his personal accomplishments as well. Collins played basketball at UMES for three seasons, including winning a MEAC Championship in 1974 and the regular season title in 1973 and 74. His team earned an Associated Press ranking of 20th in the national AP poll during the 1974 season and finished leading the nation in points per game with 96.7. That team average was before the three-point line existed in college basketball. Collins was an All-MEAC backcourt selection in 73 and 74 and was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers in 1974 in the second round. He was an All-American in 1974 and a member of the NAIA All-Tournament Team in 1973. He is a member of the 1,000 point club at UMES, posting 1,075 in just his final two seasons.
Reginald Butler played on the Hawk hardwood from the 67-68 season through 70-71. Butler earned his degree in Physical Education in 1971 and was a starting point guard for all four years of his collegiate career. As quarterback of the Hawk offense, Butler's squads won more games over a four year span than any other four year block of Hawk basketball. In a time when assists were not tracked, it is believed that Butler would still stand atop the all-time assists list at UMES. He played on teams with five UMES Hall of Famers which won the NAIA District Championship in 1969 and 1970 was third in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) standings in 1969. A student of Hall of Fame Coach Joe Robinson, Butler went on to a 36 year career with the Department of Defense.

The Sooners never trailed and looked impressive on both ends of the floor in front of over 9,000 fans at the Lloyd Noble Center. Freshman center Sean Berry (Irvington, N.J.) posted the second double-double of the season for the Hawks, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds, both team highs. Junior Tim Burns (Franklinville, Md.) had another solid performance, but it wasn't enough as the UMES men's basketball team was topped by South Carolina State, 80-67, Saturday at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center. Burns, who had recently gotten over a bout with suspected food poisoning, scored a game-high 20 points (17 in the second half) on 8-for-12 shooting (3-for-4 from 3-point). He also had four rebounds and one assist. Redshirt sophomore Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) and senior Neal Pitt (Fort Washington, Md.) also scored in double digits with 15 and 11 points, respectively. Pitt, playing for the first time in five games due to an ankle injury, also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Worthen Arena Monday night. Haley, who was 5-for-12 from the floor and 3-for-9 from 3-point land, also had three rebounds, three steals and one assist. White continues to dish out assists on the season as he had six for the night in addition to four rebounds, one block and one steal. Sophomore Tyler Hines (Sicklerville, N.J.) led the Hawks in rebounds with nine. He added in four points and one blocked shot. UMES was down by just four points at halftime, but second half efforts were not enough as the Nebraska Cornhuskers held on strong to defeat the Hawks, 74-60, in front of 8,482 at the Devaney Center Saturday afternoon. Haley once again led all scorers with 18 points in 30 minutes of play on 8-for-17 from the floor (1-for-6 from behind the arc). He added four rebounds, two assists and one steal. To celebrate the beginning of full team practices, UMES will play host to its annual Hawk Hysteria at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. The festivities will follow the 6 p.m. UMES volleyball match against Hampton University. Hawk Hysteria, a variation of Midnight Madness, will take place before the teams' first official practices of the season. This year's event will feature a live deejay, giveaways, a student 3-point competition, and the men's and women's teams playing intrasquad scrimmages. The women's exhibition will consist of seven-minute halves, and the men's game will have 10-minute halves. Women's coach Fred Batchelor said Hawk Hysteria has slowly grown in popularity over the years. "Over my time here, it has taken on a life of its own," he said. "It's more than basketball; it's become a campus event." Although the men's team was 4-28 last year, second-year coach Frankie Allen is pleased with student reaction toward his squad. "I thought the support for a program that has been down is outstanding," he said. "There's an excitement here that the campus community gets behind." Though it is an event for the whole campus, Hawk Hysteria will be beneficial for the players, many of whom last stepped on the Hytche Center floor in the spring. "They're not yet in basketball shape," Batchelor said. "You may see some fatigue and some rust in their game, as they'll need to work on their conditioning." -- delmarvanow.com September 2009 August 2009 2009-2010 Women's Basketball News & Headlines March 2010 February 2010 02/22 - Hawk Talk The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team mounted a late second-half rally against Bethune-Cookman behind a game-high 27 points from senior April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) but came up short in a 61-54 loss at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center Monday. The Lady Hawks (8-13, 5-6 MEAC) erased an eight-point halftime deficit taking their first lead since the opening minute of play when redshirt sophomore Bria Jackson (Rochester, N.Y.) drained a 3-pointer from the corner to put her team up, 50-49, with 5:50 remaining in the game. UMES was never able to lengthen its advantage on successive trips down the floor as B-CU's Sarah Bolden converted a layup at the 4:01 mark to take control of the game for Lady Wildcats (13-11, 8-4) for good. McBride recorded a career-high 31 points, including 25 in the second half and overtime, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team fell to Florida A&M, 75-67, at the William P.
