No one knows that better than Viking head coach Eddie Spencer. "The last three games we have faced the third team in the state, the second team in the state and the sixth-ranked team in the state," said Spencer. "It's tough." Friday night the Vikings faced Hampton Christian and dropped an 87-50 decision to the sixth-ranked team in the state. However, it was a night to celebrate for the Vikings as guard Matt Kelley scored 24 points and broke the 1,000-point scoring barrier for his high school career. Kelley netted the tying basket with 1:40 left in the game with Hampton Christian. Then, a few seconds later he made one-of-two free throws to move beyond the 1,000-point plateau. The game was stopped briefly as the announcement was made of Kelley's noteworthy achievement. His teammates on the floor and on the bench came out on the court to congratulate him. After the game, Kelley was congratulated by fans, his parents and Spencer. Although playing on a sprained ankle, sustained last week, Kelley has led the Vikings in all three games played since the injury. He is wearing a brace on his injured right ankle that limits his mobility and jumping ability. Despite all the adversity, Kelley has demonstrated his knowledge of the game and used his experience to overcome his limited mobility.

The Vikings were runner-up in the Metro Conference this season and finished in the top four of the state tournament, following a loss to state champion Miller School in the state semifinals. "We have a really great group of girls," said Viking head coach Ralph Dodd. "I don't know what I've done to deserve such a good group of girls." Dodd said there were no problems with the team the entire season. "I think the biggest problem we had all year was someone bringing a home jersey to an away game," said Dodd. Dodd coached the team with assistants Benjy Rew and Rob Bloxom. "I can't say enough nice things about Benjy and Rob," said Dodd. "After losing Tommy (Northam) before the season started, we really needed help and Benjy and Rob provided it." The team started the season with strong efforts, winning their first games by big margins. Then, senior guard Blaire Bloxom got sidelined with a heart problem and missed several games. She returned for the final games and helped fuel the Vikings' strong run in the state playoffs. Broadwater finished second in the Metro Conference, losing to Williamsburg Christian. Broadwater then mounted a strong run in the state playoffs that ended with a loss to Miller School in the state semi-finals. Miller met Williamsburg Christian in the state title game and Miller won the title. Broadwater final two losses of the season came to the state's top two teams. Broadwater finished the season with a 16-8 record with just about all the losses coming against schools with much higher enrollments. Seniors Kristin Collins and Blaire Bloxom both surpassed the 1,000-point for career scoring. Collins finished a brilliant career at Broadwater with 1,416 points and 1,171 rebounds. "She has a strong will to win," said Dodd. Collins also blocked 60 shots this season. Bloxom finished her high school basketball career with 1,054 points, breaking the 1,000-point barrier during the state playoffs. Collins led the Vikings in scoring this season with an average of 17 points and 12 rebounds per game. Bloxom finished with a 13.4 points per game average. Seniors Paige Rew and Tori Newman also contributed to the success of this year's team. Rew collected 153 rebounds and averaged 5.2 points a game. She also blocked 39 shots during the season. Newman led the team in free throw percentage, making 71 percent of her free throws this season. Here's how the post season played out for the Vikings.
Metro Conference Tournament The Vikings defeated Denbigh Baptist, 60-43, in the semifinals of the Metro Conference Tournament. "We played as good a team game as we played all season," said Dodd. The win over Denbigh was sweet because of a Viking loss to Denbigh earlier in the regular season. Madison Bloxom led the Vikings with a 14-point effort in the game. Blaire Bloxom and Kristin Collins had 11 points each and Paige Rew had 10 points. Madison Bloxom had three 3-point baskets in the game. Collins blocked 10 shots. "Some of those blocks were like volleyball kills," said Dodd. "Denbigh was bigger and taller than us, but we played taller. The next night Broadwater lost a 62-54 decision to Williamsburg Christian. Collins led the team with 16 points, followed by Blaire Bloxom with 13 pints. Madison Bloxom and Tori Newman each scored nine points. Keyana Brown led Denbigh with 17 points.

The Vikings, who were at full strength, dropped a 66-39 decision to Williamsburg Christian. "They've picked up three new players," said Broadwater head coach Ralph Dodd. "And they're good players, too." The Eagles came out firing in this game, scoring 25 points in the first quarter to take the lead and were never seriously threatened after that. "It was good seeing Blaire (Bloxom) back in the lineup," said Dodd. Bloxom, who missed several games with a heart ailment, scored nine points and shared team high scoring honors with Kristin Collins. Libby Timmer led the Eagles with 25 points. "It was a very physical game and we don't fare well in physical games," said Dodd. Williamsburg (66) Pierce 1 2-5 5, Perkins 3 1-2 7, Timmer 9 7-8 25, K. Bloxom, a senior, is a starting guard and second leading scorer on the team, but has been sidelined with a heart ailment that could knock her out of the rest of the season. "We really miss Blaire," said Vikings head coach Ralph Dodd, who coaches the team with Blaire Bloxom's father, Rob Bloxom. Tuesday night the Vikings had little problem with Isle of Wight, posting a 70-16 victory over the visitors. Bloxom's replacement in the lineup was her sister Madison Bloxom, who reeled off 21 points in the game. "That's the first time Madison has scored 20 points," said Dodd. Kristin Collins led the Vikings with 22 points in the contest. She is averaging almost 20 points a game this season for the Vikings. Despite a 40-point effort by Collins on Jan. 21, Broadwater lost a 68-64 decision to Metro Conference rival Portsmouth Christian. "I thought she had about 20 points," said Dodd. "But when we looked in the scorebook she had 40 points. She is such a great player. She gets her points in the flow of the game." Portsmouth's Serena Hall scored 35 points in the contest for the home team. A day earlier the Vikings traveled to Salisbury, Md. and downed Salisbury School, 52-15. Collins led the Vikings with 21 points, followed by Paige Rew with 12 points. The Vikings' season record stood at 9-3 following the win over Isle of Wight. The Vikings won their season opener against Greenbrier Academy on the road, then returned to the friendly confines of the Hall Center to easily get past Portsmouth Christian. Broadwater defeated the Greenbrier Gators, 63-32, on Nov. 24 in Chesapeake. Kristin Collins led the way for the Vikings with 24 points. Sarah Sharpley scored 12 points for the Vikings, including a game-high three 3-pointers. Tori Newman had eight points for Broadwater. "We played the game without Blaire Bloxom, and everyone on the team scored," said Broadwater head coach Ralph Dodd. The Vikings returned home Tuesday night for their first home game of the season and beat Portsmouth Christian, 55-33. Before the game started Coach Dodd presented Kristin Collins with a special basketball in recognition of her breaking the 1,000-point barrier. Collins actually broke through the 1,000-point barrier last season, but it was in Broadwater's final game of the season on the road and this provided the first time to recognize the achievement before the home fans, according to Broadwater athletic director Brian Rolander. Collins then went out and scored 21 points to lead the Vikings to their second win of the young season. Blaire Bloxom and Caroline Jones scored 10 points each for the Vikings. "She (Collins) is a special player," said Dodd. "She's already in mid-season form." -- delmarvanow.com 12/04 - Broadwater 73, Isle of Wight 32 BROADWATER (3-0): B. Bloxom 18, M.
