03/16 - Bayside All-Stars play for future

The top upperclassmen from the Bayside Conference will have one last time to shine Wednesday, as the North and South divisions clash in the 25th annual Cliff Mister Senior All-Star game at Wicomico High School. The girls will get the action started, tipping off at 6 p.m. before the boys take the floor at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5, with all proceeds going toward the Bayside Basketball Coaches Association scholarship, given to selected seniors basketball players who are college bound. "For you basketball junkies out there, this is it," said Butch Waller, Wi-Hi boys’ basketball head coach. "There is nothing else after this. This will be the last time fans will have the chance to see these kids as a group." The All-Star games will be broken into four 10 minute quarters, to more closely resemble the college game, and squads will not be allowed to play zone defense. The contest should feature an up-tempo, fast paced style of play, according to Waller, with scores inching toward triple digits. "It's an All-Star game, it's just like the NBA All-Star game," said Waller. "You’re going to see all kinds of stuff, this is the best of the best that we have around here. You'll see alley-oops and slam dunks and all kinds of stuff. It's not the kind of game I would coach or somebody else would coach, it's just a fun thing. It's fun for the players and it's fun for the fans." All the proceeds from the event will be directed back into the community, and every dollar collected at the gate will be added to the scholarship fund. "(Wi-Hi) donates the gym, the security is donated and the referees donate their time for free," said Waller. "So the entire gate receipt goes toward the scholarship fund. We pick a couple boys and a couple girls that are definitely going to college and try to give them a little bit of scholarship money, but it all depends on the gate. It's not much, but it's something." While the scholarship fund won't cover a student’s entire tuition, Waller knows every little bit helps and he expects the community to be out in full force Wednesday night. "This area is a basketball area. They eat and sleep basketball. They just love it," said Waller. "I've been coaching for 44 years and it's never wavered. Big games always have big crowds and the people are always knowledgeable. They know who's good and who's not good, who's rebuilding or whatever. They know this is it, after this it's over, and there will be no more basketball. So, I would be very surprised if the gym is not packed to the rafters."

03/09 - Snow Hill claims player, coach of the year

The Snow Hill boys basketball team racked up a lot of honors this season as they marched to a MPSSAA 1A East regional title. Among them is conference player and coach of the year, according to Bayside Conference South coaches' recently released all-conference and senior all-star teams. The Eagles of Snow Hill continued to dominate their Bayside competition, as senior point guard Keith Jackson was named Player of the Year while Allen Miller was selected as Coach of the Year. "I think so," said Miller when asked if he thought Jackson was the best player in the Bayside this season. "I'm a little biased, but I guess the rest of the coaches thought so, too." On the team since his freshman year, Jackson was a big key in the Eagles' Bayside Championship and state playoff run. "He stayed healthy, he stayed composed. He's grown up a lot since he was a freshman," said Miller of Jackson. "If you look at the stats, he led us in rebounding, points, assists. He's an all-around athlete, he jumps out the building and is quick as a cat." Snow Hill's Ryan Waters also received considerable Player of the Year consideration, finishing third behind Jackson and Mardela sophomore Kody Jacoby. Along with Jackson, Jacoby and Waters, Cedrick Johnson of Stephen Decatur, Denzel Timmons of Pocomoke and Jason Talley of James M. Bennett were named to the first team All-Bayside South team. Jacoby who is a sophomore is the only player of the group not to be named to the senior All-Star South team. "(Jackson and Waters) have been a great one-two punch for us this year," said Miller. "It gave us two 20 point-a-game scorers. If one was off one night, the other one always seemed to be on and some nights they both were on. Ryan was second in everything behind Keith -- second in points, second in rebounds, second in steals, second in assist. There was nowhere we went that they didn't know who the two kids were." Miller who recorded his 300th win this season by defeating North Caroline in the Bayside Conference Championship game, says he appreciates the recognition as Bayside South's best coach. "It's always nice when your peers elect you to something," said Miller. "It's the little things that we do that come back and reward us. I'm very humbled and very pleased to receive that honor from my peers."

03/01 - Indians tame Tigers

Behind a stifling defense and junior Alex Behnke’s 37 points, North East rolled to a 70-50 boys’ basketball victory over host Rising Sun in the 2A East Region first round on Saturday. The Indians (12-9) used a suffocating man defense to take a 21-6 first-quarter lead. “Just being a playoff game, we knew that we had to be aggressive facing this team,” North East coach Dave Huff said. “When we had the ball in our half-court offense, we wanted to get the ball inside by either taking the ball to the hole or getting it to our big man Ian (McDonald).” However, Rising Sun (3-19) pulled to within 46-36 in the third quarter before the Indians regained control when the Tigers lost their composure. “We made a lot of mistakes,” Rising Sun coach Mike Miller said. “We just couldn’t get out of our own way, just turning the ball over and compounding mistakes. We would drive down the court and not get the rebound. It was just a tough loss.” Without Daniel Ray and Hayden Roberts due to foul trouble, the Tigers struggled to contain Behnke. Also for the Indians, Mark McEvoy added nine points, John Drone scored eight points, McDonald finished with six points and Shane MacInnes and Rob Nixon contributed three points apiece. Dylan Boyd and Chris Urban chipped in with two points. For the Tigers, Andrew Bialek led the way with 14 points, while Andre Moore added 11 points, Matt Miller and Greg Allen contributed nine points apiece, Dom Massimiano chipped in with three points and Ray and Nick Smith netted two points each. With the victory, North East advanced to face Fallston in Tuesday’s District VII Sectional semifinals at 7 p.m. “We hope to just bring the same intensity, same defense and try to get a win,” Huff said. -- cecilwhig.com

03/01- Elkton boys upset by previously winless Bel Air, 49-43

Elkton stumbled in its 2A East Region first-round match-up against Bel Air on Saturday, as the visiting Bobcats earned a 49-43 victory, their first of the season. The Golden Elks (6-14) dispatched Bel Air by double digits in each of the two previous meetings (52-40 on Feb. 20 and 71-57 on Jan. 15) but trailed for much of the contest, including a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter. “We might have just overlooked them,” Elkton coach Steven Wright said. “One of the hardest things to do is to beat a team three times (in one season), and we overlooked Bel Air.” The Elks were paced by senior Mike Proctor, who scored a game-high 17 points to go with four rebounds and three steals. Kevin Marshall added 11 points and six rebounds, while Zach Tuckmantel contributed eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks. Elkton shot 14-for-44 (31.8 percent) from the field, including 1-for-9 (11.1 percent) from 3-point range. The Bobcats (1-18) were paced by Calvin Murray (14 points, six rebounds), Dezmon Hall (12 points, two assists), Matt Adams (seven points, two steals) and Zach Nadolny (seven points, five rebounds). Bel Air shot 17-for-39 (43.6 percent) from the field and forced Elkton into 19 turnovers defensively. “I am very proud of Bel Air,” Wright said. “They never stopped playing hard, and I told their coaches at the end of the game that I was very impressed. They played tough, they never gave up and they were having fun with it too, which is the best part.” The Elks were outscored in every frame except the fourth, as they cut their deficit to three points twice (44-41 with 33.1 seconds remaining and 46-43 with 9.1 seconds remaining) with under a minute to play. “We started off slow,” Wright said. “My team is so young, and this is the first time that all of them have played in a playoff game. We just played the last five games so hard to get ready for the playoffs. It’s a shame it had to end this way.” Bel Air advances to the District VII Sectional semifinals against No. 2 Edgewood on Tuesday. -- cecilwhig.com

02/26 - Elks look for sweep of Bobcats

If the Elkton boys’ basketball team advances to the 2A East Region District VII Sectional semifinals, it will encounter an odd situation. The Golden Elks would travel to second-seeded Edgewood. Both teams play in the Chesapeake Division. However, due to snow storms, the two contests were postponed a total of four times, before eventually being canceled. That means the first time these division rivals play would be in the postseason. “I don’t see it as either (an advantage or disadvantage),” Elkton coach Steve Wright said. “I see it as an opportunity for two teams that do not know much about each other to do what they have done all year and play ball. And may the better team that night win.” Of course, to set up that odd match-up, the Elks must dispose of Bel Air at 7 tonight for the third time this season. Elkton defeated the Bobcats 71-57 on Jan. 15 and 52-40 on Saturday. “Don’t take Bel Air for granted,” Wright said. “We need to communicate on defense, play with patience and pass the ball around looking for the open man.” The Bobcats enter the game winless, while the Elks come in without a single Chesapeake Division win outside of those two Bel Air games. Still, both teams have improved throughout the season, with young players gaining more experience. Senior Mike Proctor scored 18 points in the regular-season finale against Joppatowne, but Wright warns that it’s not up to any one player to carry the squad. “What I preach is team ball, and each player has an integral role on our team,” Wright said. “If he plays his role for his team, then and only then will we win.”

A rivalry renewed

When healthy, North East was one of the top teams in the Susquehanna Division. Still, playing against last-place Rising Sun on Jan. 19 wasn’t easy. The Tigers lost 53-47, but of their 18 defeats, it was the only one by single digits. Snow cost Rising Sun its chance at redemption Feb. 12. However, the two teams drew each other in the region tournament, not only giving the Tigers another shot, but another match-up at home. “We have to protect the ball, limit turnovers, have better offensive possessions and get rebounds,” Rising Sun coach Mike Miller said. “We have to attack the rim and feed the big man.” If they do those things, Miller doesn’t see why the team can’t make a playoff push, despite the sub-par regular season. “We’d like to beat Fallston on their home court,” Miller said. “After that, anything can happen. We’ll see if we can get rolling. We’ll have a good home turnout for North East, then we go to Fallston. We played with them for two quarters. We have to put four quarters together, and I think we can beat them.” Of course, the Indians have their own ideas about Friday. “We can improve our shot selection,” North East coach David Huff said. “We were settling for jump shots instead of taking the ball to the hoop. We also need to come out with more intensity and keep up that intensity throughout the game. Rising Sun is a better team than their record indicates, and we will need to play a complete game in order to win. We need to continue to get Ian (McDonald) the ball down low and play great defense, also.” North East enters on a two-game skid, and Huff knows it must play better. “We need to play our game to win,” he said. “We need to take good shots by pushing the ball up the court and getting the ball to the rim. We also need to box out and play better defense than we have been lately.” Receiving reinforcements will help, as well. Starters Aaron Owens (personal), Gannon Irrgang (wrist) and McDonald (shin) and reserves Rashad Wilford and Lorenzo Deer all missed North East’s 63-44 loss to North Harford on Monday. However, McDonald and Owens may both return for tonight’s 6 p.m. contest. McDonald’s return may be most important, giving the team an inside presence against Rising Sun center Greg Allen. “Rising Sun is a good team,” Huff said. “They play hard every game and are well coached. To slow them down we need to try to contain Greg Allen. He is a big body with a soft touch. We also need to contest their shooters (Aaron Bilek and Andre Moore) and move with and without the ball on offense. “Alex Behnke, Mark McEvoy and Ian McDonald are an integral part of our team’s success. They are our leading scorers, rebounders and captains of our team. I need them to score the ball, play great defense and hit the boards extremely hard.” -- cecilwhig.com

02/25 - Snow Hill boys take Bayside title

The Bayside Conference's best squared off Wednesday, with North Caroline facing Snow Hill in the boys basketball championship game. A 27-point performance by Keith Jackson helped Snow Hill erased a seven-point North Caroline lead at halftime and claimed a 52-41 victory at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. It was the 300th victory in Snow Hill coach Allen Miller's 16-year career. "There was no better place to get the win than tonight," Miller said. "It's been a long run." Both teams struggled at the beginning of the game, with Snow Hill (21-2, 15-1 Bayside) trailing 10-9 at the end of the first quarter. North Caroline (16-3, 15-1) saw its lead expand by as much as seven early in the quarter as the Bulldogs' big man, Ka-Ron Bell, scored eight of his 14 points. The Eagles cut the lead to 20-17 with 2:25 remaining before the half, but the Bulldogs responded with 4-0 run to go into the intermission up 24-17. After halftime, Snow Hill began to chip away at North Caroline's lead, with Jackson scoring nine points in the third quarter. But as soon as the Eagles tied the game at 26-all, the Bulldogs would remain on the offensive, with point guard Herbert Dennis scoring eight of his 14 points to help push the lead up to four. It was in the final quarter when Snow Hill was finally able to pass North Caroline for good on the hot hand of Ryan Waters, who scored 10 of his 16 points, including two 3-pointers that tied the game. Jackson said the key to the comeback was positive thinking. "In the first half, we missed a couple of shots," he said. "We came out in the second half and had the mindset of the shots going in." After playing four games in six days, the Eagles will be able to catch their breath thanks to a first-round bye in the MPSSAA 1A East playoffs. Snow Hill will play the winner of North Dorchester/Cambridge-South Dorchester on Tuesday. -- delmarvanow.com

02/24 - Elkton showing improvement

Early in the season, the Elkton boys’ basketball team struggled against Cecil County opponents, missing free throws and turning the ball over at a very high rate. However, the young Golden Elks improved throughout the year, ending the regular season with competitive games against Havre de Grace, Aberdeen and Joppatowne. The finale, a 65-47 loss to the visiting Mariners on Tuesday, sent senior Mike Proctor off on a positive note. The guard recorded 18 points and eight rebounds on Senior Night, keeping Elkton in the contest until the final minutes. “I was just feeling it tonight,” Proctor said. “My shot was on, and my coach told me to be more aggressive. I guess that’s what I have to do for my team to win. I just came to play.” The Golden Elks (6-13 overall, 2-8 Chesapeake) led 18-15 after the first quarter, and despite never leading in the second half, they were as close as 49-43 in the fourth quarter. “We just played smart,” Proctor said. “Keep your head up when dribbling, and you can cut your turnovers in half. We’ve been working on what we struggled with to get ready for playoffs.” Elkton made 14-of-21 free throws and finished with just 15 turnovers, both improvements from December. However, Proctor said it was the other side of the ball that impressed him the most. “We’ve been worrying about our defense,” he said. “Every day in practice, coach is working on defense. Defense leads to offense.” Kevin Marshall added nine points, six rebounds and one block for the Elks, while Nate Parker (three rebounds, two assists and one steal) and Matt Armour (four rebounds) netted eight points apiece. Zack Tuckmantel finished with five points, two blocks and one steal and Mark Wesley contributed two points, two assists and one steal. Dimitrius Jelen recorded 14 points to lead Joppatowne (15-6, 8-4), while Shendell Chase added eight points, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal, Bryan Corbin contributed seven points, seven rebounds and one block and Micah Baugh and Ryan Stokeling (two assists and one block) added six points and three rebounds apiece. Cameron Seward, Dominic Harper (five rebounds, three assists and two steals). Joel Scott (eight rebounds and four steals) chipped in with five points each, and Marez Jenifer and Jarrod Wrencher netted four points each. -- cecilwhig.com

02/24 - Perryville pulls away from Rising Sun

After seeing its 23-point first-half lead whittled down to four late in the third quarter, host Perryville responded in an 86-64 boys’ basketball victory over Rising Sun on Tuesday. “We were telling each other that we had to step it up and work harder,” Panthers senior James Hopkins said. “We finally found that mindset we had in the first quarter, and we stuck with it and excelled from there.” Perryville (9-12, 6-5 Susquehanna) ended the game on a 31-13 run, which included a 16-5 fourth-quarter spurt, that spanned the final 10 minutes. “We caught some breaks and got rebounds, and we got down the floor for some quick transition buckets,” Panthers coach Charlie Givens Jr. said. “That got them on their heels a little bit, and we able to get back to the level we played in the first quarter.” Perryville outscored the Tigers (3-18, 1-12 in the division) 15-2 in the first five minutes of the contest, and its lead swelled to 42-19 halfway through the second quarter. “We all played together and shared the ball,” Panthers senior Daijon Caulk said. “We got back on defense, as well. Everything went well. We had all the momentum and the crowd was behind us. We were handling our business.” Suddenly, the game turned, as Rising Sun went on a 32-13 run over the next 10 minutes to cut deficit to 55-51 with two minutes left in the third, setting up Perryville’s final spurt. The Panthers had five players score in double figures, led by Caulk’s 24 points. Jordan Lilly netted 17, Hopkins scored 16, Gabe Sherrod pitched in 14 and Alishawine Monk added 10. “We just shared the ball and not be selfish,” Caulk said. “Usually teams have someone shoot too much and overdoing it, but we share the ball and gave it to the hot hand. Tonight, we all had the touch.” Monk led the Panthers with 12 rebounds for a double-double, and Caulk also finished with a double-double with 10 rebounds. Lilly dished out a game-high six assists. Matt Miller, Aaron Bailek and Greg Allen scored 12 points each to lead the Tigers. -- cecilwhig.com

02/20 - Seahawks pull away from Lions

Queen Anne's Kenon Alsop had a chance midway through the second quarter of Friday's boys basketball game to give his team the lead for the first time against the home-standing Stephen Decatur. Trailing 23-22, the guard took a missed free throw and charged down the court for the go-ahead layup, but as the ball slipped through the net, the referee blew his whistle and signaled a charge on Alsop. After that, the Seahawks went on a 14-2 run to finish out the half and never looked back, beating the Lions, 80-51. "I thought it was a good game for us," Decatur coach Travis Lloyd said. "We came out pretty well, got out to an 11-0 lead, and then we kind of got a little complacent. I think we were looking at the scoreboard, and Queen Anne's kept fighting back." After a hot start by the Seahawks (16-3, 15-2 Bayside), the Lions answered back, pulling to within 15-13 with less than a half a minute left in the first quarter. The Lions' biggest offensive weapon was their long-distance shooting; however, their touch from beyond the arc seemed to leave them in the second half, as they failed to register a 3-pointer in the final 16 minutes of the game. Alsop finished with 15 points, while teammate Dshawn Wilson contributed 16 points to pace Queen Anne's (6-11, 6-10). "They did a good job against us," Lloyd said. "They hung around early shooting 3s. They shot very well from the 3-point line, but they lived and died by it, and they just didn't hit enough." Senior guard Cedric Johnson made his last regular-season home game memorable, pacing the Decatur offense on senior night, scoring a game-high 26 points while knocking down seven 3-pointers. "Tonight (Johnson) showed his shot," Lloyd said. "He's had it all year, but he hasn't fired it up there." -- delmarvanow.com

02/19 - Lilly blooms in win

Needing to win out to finish the regular season at .500, Perryville took a 16-point lead over visiting Bohemia Manor late in the third quarter on Thursday. However, the Eagles closed the frame on a seven-point run to pull to within nine. That’s when senior point guard Jordan Lilly put the game away, leading the Panthers to a 63-42 boys’ basketball victory. “I wanted to finish the game,” Lilly said. “We needed this game. We’ve been struggling. The team needed me to put some points up, and the buckets were falling.” Lilly opened the fourth quarter with a nifty pass in the lane to Alishawine Monk, one of six assists on the night. On the ensuing three possessions, Lilly drained a pair of 3-pointers and added a free throw for a 50-22 lead. Lilly, who finished with 25 points, five steals and five rebounds, credited the win to the play of Monk and Daijon Caulk in the low post, an area Perryville (7-10 overall, 4-4 Susquehanna) struggled in for most of the season. “I played pretty well,” Caulk said. “I hit the boards and just played my role. Moving down low worked out for me, and we pushed the ball up the court.” Caulk recorded 13 points, 13 rebounds, six steals and four assists, while Monk tallied 13 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The trio proved to be too much for Bo Manor (6-13, 1-10), which took the Panthers to double overtime on Jan. 19. In the teams’ first meeting, a 90-80 Perryville win, Marquis Bradley netted 40 points. Despite the guard’s absence Thursday, the Panthers prevailed without needing the extra sessions. “We played as a team (Thursday),” Caulk said. “There was no negative energy. Our defense was key to our win. Everybody was talking on defense. “The last time we were lackadaisical and not sharing the ball.” Brandon Wills added seven points and James Hopkins netted four points for Perryville. D.J. Dunlap scored 11 points for the Eagles, while Tom Foard added seven points, Mike Wisher netted six points and C.J. Felder finished with five points. Seth Grimes, who left the game with an ankle injury with 53.7 seconds left in the third quarter, recorded eight points. Both teams are back in action tonight, as the Panthers travel to North Harford and Bo Manor hosts Patterson Mill. Both the Hawks and Huskies are fighting with Fallston for first place in the Susquehanna Division. -- cecilwhig.com

02/19 - Boys' Basketball Notebook

Already without starting guard Aaron Owens and reserve Rashad Wilford due to personal reasons, North East lost another player for the season when Gannon Irrgang sprained his wrist in practice. Shane MacInnes started in the Indians’ 56-51 victory over Perryville on Tuesday, and Kendall Danglade was brought up from JV to add depth. “Gannon started to do a much better job of bringing up the ball against some pressure and running the offense,” North East coach Dave Huff said. “Missing his ability to score will also hurt our team a bit. Shane and Kendall will have to step it up a little to fill his spot. I have a lot of confidence in both of them to help our team while Gannon is out.” Perryville guard Marquis Bradley averaged 22.0 points in 10 games this year, including a conference-high 40 against Bohemia Manor on Jan. 19. That total won’t change as he has left the team due to disciplinary reasons, coach Charlie Givens Jr. said. The Panthers are 3-4 in his absence this year, compared to 4-6 with him on the court. “Other guys have to step up,” Givens said. “That’s a lot of points we have to make up for. Guys have to fill in the void.” Senior point guard Jordan Lilly has done that, topping 20 points in three of those seven contests and reaching 16 five times. He never scored more than 16 points once with Bradley on the court. With just two days left for teams to play before Sunday’s boys’ basketball draw, Havre de Grace and Joppatowne remain in contention for Top 4 seeds in the 1A North Region. The Warriors can move into first with a win over Elkton tonight and a Pikesville loss, while the Mariners can clinch at least a third seed with a victory over Bel Air. Patterson Mill could sneak into fourth place with a win over Bohemia Manor and a loss by either Joppatowne or Owings Mill. In the 2A East Region’s North Sectional, the battle between North East, Fallston and Edgewood will go down to the final day. The Cougars can clinch the top seed with a victory over Rising Sun tonight, while the Rams need to upset both Aberdeen tonight and C.M. Wright on Saturday to earn the second seed. The Indians will claim second place with a win at Harford Tech tonight and one Edgewood or Fallston loss.

02/18 - Indians rout Eagles, earn season sweep

The North East boys’ basketball team continued its dominance over Bohemia Manor on Wednesday night, earning a three-game sweep with a resounding 65-34 victory. Guard Alex Behnke led all scorers with 15 points and five assists, as the Indians put on a strong overall performance in front of a large home crowd on Senior Night. However, despite the lopsided outcome, North East (11-7 overall, 7-4 Susquehanna) didn’t expect an easy victory. “(Bohemia Manor) could have easily won both of the (previous two) games, so my guys knew it was going to be a really hard game coming in,” North East coach David Huff said. This one, though, was never close, as North East went on a 7-0 run with slightly less than five minutes remaining in the first quarter. “We were trying to push the ball all game long, get the rebound outlet and get up court as fast as we could to get easy baskets.” Huff said. In addition to their aggressive offensive attack, the Indians’ stifling defense stymied Bohemia Manor (6-12, 1-9), as it was held to just one field goal in the second quarter. After extending the lead to 43-21, North East surrendered a pair of quick baskets to begin the fourth. “(Our) defense sagged down for a second, but after talking to them, they realized they needed to pick it up in order for us to close out the game,” Huff said. That’s just what they did, finishing the contest on a 22-9 run. All nine Indians scored, including senior guard Mark McEvoy, who finished with 12 points and eight assists. “Bo Manor is a much harder team to play at home, but we just wanted to come out on Senior Night and get a big win for us and all of our seniors,” he said. “They’re a good team, but we played (well).” Senior guard Seth Grimes recorded nine points and four steals to lead the Eagles, while Mike Wisher added six points and five rebounds, Chuckie Dix contributed seven rebounds and five points and Tom Foard chipped in six points and four rebounds. -- cecilwhig.com

02/18 - Elkton pulls away

Trailing by four points in the third quarter, Elkton needed a spark. Rising Sun had scored nine of 10 points to grab its biggest lead of the game, and it appeared a sweep was starting to slip away from the Golden Elks. However, Mark Wesley fed Kevin Marshall, who completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to pull the hosts to within one. It also jumpstarted a game-sealing run, as Elkton earned a 62-41 boys’ basketball victory on Wednesday. “We’re getting better, way better,” Marshall said. “We’re starting to make our and-1s and hustle. We got our intensity back.” Trailing 31-27 before Marshall’s basket, the Golden Elks went on a 26-2 run that spanned eight minutes. Marshall, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds, punctuated the spurt with a fast-break dunk. During the run, Elkton (5-10) forced eight turnovers, four of which came via a steal, followed by a fast-break bucket. “At halftime, coach (Steve Wright) told us to take advantage of their turnovers,” said guard Gaston Tillery, who recorded a team-high four steals. “We let them bring the ball to us.” Overall, the Golden Elks forced 26 turnovers, including 15 steals (Mike Proctor, Nate Parker, Mark Gatewood and Rashad Johnson added two apiece). “We’ve been focusing on defense at practice,” said Tillery, who finished with 10 points. “We’re not doing much with our offense. We know we can score. We’re just doing lots of drills to work on our defense.” Proctor added 11 points and nine rebounds, while Matt Armour contributed 10 rebounds and three assists, Zack Tuckmantel finished with five points and five rebounds and Parker and Johnson scored five points each. Greg Allen recorded 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Tigers (3-15), while Andre Moore added 11 points and two steals, Aaron Bialek contributed seven points, five assists and three steals and Nick Smith finished with three steals. The two teams could meet a third time this season if they draw each other in the 2A East Region’s North Sectional. Brackets will be released Sunday. -- cecilwhig.com

02/17 - Drone lifts N.E.

Forward John Drone scored 19 points in a 56-51 victory, as North East held off a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt by host Perryville in Tuesday’s boys’ basketball match-up. The Indians (10-7 overall, 6-4 Susquehanna) led 28-23 at halftime and built their lead to 11 points in the third period but watched the advantage slip away in the final stanza when the Panthers switched their defensive strategy. “They really pushed it on us (defensively) and made us speed up a little, but we did a good job slowing down at the end and getting into our half-court (offense),” Drone said. Perryville employed a box-and-one zone defense for the first three quarters to try and shut down North East standout Alex Behnke. Panthers point guard Jordan Lilly was saddled with the task of containing the All-County junior and held him to three first-half points. “There were a lot of open shots for me,” Drone said. “When they go box-and-one on Alex, it creates opportunities for others to step up.” Drone was successful finding the gaps in the Perryville zone early, scoring 12 points before the break. “(John) had the best night I’ve seen him play since I have been coaching here,” Indians coach David Huff said. “He was good inside. He was taking good shots. He was making sure to use the glass. He was just finding some open space and hitting his shots.” The Panthers (6-10, 3-6) switched to a man-to-man press in the fourth quarter, which propelled them on a 10-1 run to take their only lead of the second-half at 46-44. “We weren’t ready for (the press), and they surprised us with it a little bit so we didn’t get into our press-break,” Huff said. “Guys tried to take it on their own, and that leads to turnovers, which let them back into it.” North East tied the contest on the following possession and recaptured the lead for good with a Behnke free throw with just under four minutes remaining. Guard Mark McEvoy contributed 17 points for the Indians, while Behnke finished with 15. “We were kind of out of shape (after missing practices due to snow) but at (Monday’s) practice we did a lot of running to try to get us prepared, and we were able to get the win,” Drone said. “It’s always good to get a win against a county (opponent), but we need to stay focused and finish the season strong.” Perryville was paced by Lilly (16 points), Gabe Sherrod (13 points) and Daijaun Caulk (10 points). North East travels to face Harford Tech, while the Panthers have a road game against North Harford next. Both games are scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. -- cecilwhig.com

02/16 - Warriors pull away a win

After two weeks of school closures and no games due to snow, both the Pocomoke and Wicomico boys basketball teams were eager to return to the court Monday. The two squads showed off their rested legs, racing up and down the floor throughout the first quarter and trading the lead back-and-forth. But after the Warriors claimed a 12-10 lead late in the opening frame, they never trailed again, winning 66-49. The two teams looked surprisingly sharp considering the long layoff, and there were only a handful of turnovers throughout the contest. Pocomoke head coach Derrick Fooks credited a practice this past weekend for most of his teams success. "It's been too long (since we've been on the court)," said Fooks. "There was so much snow out there, nobody could get in the gym. Nobody was in school. I didn't know where the kids' focus was, so Saturday was a great day to get everybody's focus back, and everybody seemed to be on the same page and in rhythm." The Warriors (15-3, 10-3 Bayside) seemed to be in sync, and nearly everyone contributed on the scoresheet against the Indians (9-9, 5-9). Pocomoke did a great job of spreading the ball around, and nine different Warriors recorded a basket, headlined by James Douglas' 17. "Well, that's a good thing," Fooks said, referring to his depth of scoring. "If that is the face of what's to come in these next few games and these next few weeks, than that is what we want. "We want to be getting better at this time of year. We want to be playing our best basketball as we get ready to go into the playoffs, because we know the playoffs are going to be tough." It was a tough night for Wi-Hi, as the Indians started out shooting well only to see their scoring touch go by the wayside. Kendall Collins, who scored a team-high 16 points, and his teammates tried to man a comeback in the fourth quarter. But after falling behind by as many as 20 points, Wi-Hi simply ran out of time. "It was back-and-forth there at the beginning," said Fooks. "But then we pulled away on a couple of shots and I thought the game was pretty much over after that." -- delmarvanow.com

02/14 - Mardela's Jacoby has huge game vs. Wi-Hi

Kody Jacoby had 44 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Mardela boys basketball team to a 79-74 victory over Wicomico. Jacoby scored 21 of his points in the fourth quarter. A.J. 02/05 - Tigers improve

Following a 49-point loss to North Harford on Jan. 15, Rising Sun was forced to take a hard look at what went wrong. After evaluating the situation, the Tigers decided the problem was more mental than physical. “We realized we can’t get down on ourselves,” Rising Sun senior Hayden Roberts said. “We need to play as a team and we can keep up with anybody.” The Tigers received a chance on Thursday to prove they’ve learned and improved since last month’s debacle. Mission complete. Sort of. Rising Sun didn’t earn its second division win but kept it close in a 55-41 boys’ basketball loss to the visiting Hawks. “It was a lot of practice and preparation,” said Roberts, who played a vital role in the turnaround. Roberts, who Tigers coach Mike Miller said has improved in recent weeks, flustered the North Harford guards with his pressure, leading to six steals. He also led the fast break and finished well near the basket, scoring a game-high 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting. “He has that in him,” Miller said. “He can do that every night. He made some spectacular plays tonight.” With a patient attack and a confusing 1-1-3 zone defense, featuring Roberts at the top, Rising Sun dictated the tempo of the game. The Hawks (11-7 overall, 8-2 Susquehanna) tried to speed up the pace with a full-court press during the first half, but the Tigers (3-14, 1-9) never flinched. “We had a hard time getting into our offense,” North Harford coach Jeff Burrows said. “They pressured our ball handlers, and their 1-1-3 gave us trouble. Still, we got the win.” Tyler Campbell provided the Hawks with a lift off the bench, recording 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Ryan Burghauser added 17 points and five rebounds, Jon Seadler netted six points and Jake Duarte finished with five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Greg Allen contributed eight points and six rebounds for Rising Sun, while Aaron Bialek tallied four assists, four rebounds and three steals and Matt Miller hauled in six boards. -- cecilwhig.com

02/05 - Boys' Basketball Notebook

-- Andre Moore has proven to be one of Rising Sun’s most prolific scorer this season, reaching double figures seven times. Playing in a tight ball game, with the Tigers struggling from beyond the arc, it appeared to be the perfect time to set the sophomore sharpshooter loose. However, the guard rarely saw the floor in a 55-41 loss to visiting North Harford on Thursday. “It was Senior Night and because Andre is only a sophomore and the seniors were playing good defense, we left them out there,” Rising Sun coach Mike Miller said. “I didn’t want to take a senior out of the game.” Moore eventually saw action in the fourth quarter and made two free throws. -- cecilwhig.com

02/04 - Indians upset Huskies

North East scored 43 second-half points to pull away for a 61-48 boys’ basketball victory against Patterson Mill on Wednesday. Ian McDonald led the Indians (9-7 overall, 5-4 Susquehanna) with 11 rebounds, eight rebounds, two blocks and two assists, while Alex Behnke added 18 points, five steals, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks and Mark McEvoy contributed 21 points, five steals, three assists and two rebounds. John Drone chipped in with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals, Gannon Irrgang tallied three points and two assists. -- cecilwhig.com

02/03 - Wisher lifts Eagles

Mike Wisher recorded 25 points, eight rebounds and two assists to lift Bohemia Manor to a 72-56 boys’ basketball victory over visiting Rising Sun on Tuesday. Also for the Eagles (6-11 overall, 1-8 Susquehanna), Seth Grimes added 17 points, four assists and four steals, while Chuckie Dix (two steals) and Tom Foard (seven rebounds) netted 10 points apiece. Greg Allen (12 rebounds) made 8-of-9 free throws to score 22 points to lead the Tigers (3-13, 1-8), while Hayden Roberts added 17 points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals and one assist, Aaron Bialek contributed 11 points and six rebounds, Andrew Moore chipped in with five points, two steals and two assists and Daniel Ray finished with three points, three assists and two steals. 02/01 - Spotlight Players

Boys’ Basketball:  Alex Behnke, North East

The junior averaged 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game last week, leading the Indians to one of just three wins by Cecil County teams. He recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, five assists and one steal in a 63-62 loss at Patterson Mill on Monday, 15 points, six rebounds and five steals in a 50-41 victory over Harford Tech on Tuesday and 13 points, nine rebounds and one steal in a 65-48 loss at Fallston on Friday. “He did everything again, as usual,” North East coach David Huff said. “He’s starting to take the ball to the basket more instead of settling for his jump shot. It’s helping him get to the line more, where he’s shooting 72 percent. Against Harford Tech, he shot the ball well. In the loss to Fallston, he was sick, but he still was able to score in the paint.” -- cecilwhig.com

02/01 - Games of the Week

Boys’ Basketball:  Rising Sun at Bohemia Manor

When: 7 p.m. Tuesday

What Rising Sun needs to do to win: The Tigers need to shoot well from the outside. They were able to beat the Eagles’ 1-3-1 zone in their last meeting, scoring from 3-point range to build an early advantage. If they are able to do so again, the offense will open up for center Greg Allen.

What Bo Manor needs to do to win: Push the ball up the court. The Eagles, who were missing Mike Wisher, C.J. Felder and Brandon Hollingsworth in their 60-47 loss to Rising Sun on Jan. 20, were unable to score often enough in transition. A pressure defense should open things up.

What to expect: Look for Bo Manor to earn its first Susquehanna Division win. The two teams are a combined 1-15 in the lower division, leaving this as a critical contest to determine who finishes in last place. -- cecilwhig.com

01/27 - Defending home court

Through two quarters, North East held Harford Tech sharpshooter Kenny West in check, as the guard made just 1-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc. However, in the third frame, West drained consecutive 3-pointers to give the visiting Cobras an 11-point lead. The Indians responded by switching from their 2-3 zone to man-to-man defense, leading to a 50-41 boys’ basketball victory on Tuesday. “We played good zone in the first half,” North East junior Alex Behnke said. “That No. 22 (West) can shoot. We had to lock him down” Powered by West’s shooting, Harford Tech turned an 18-16 halftime deficit into a 29-18 lead in less than three minutes. After North East (8-6 overall, 4-3 Susquehanna) went to man, with a full-court press mixed in, West was unable to find many shooting lanes. While he did connect on his third long ball of the quarter, West generally found a hand in his face the remainder of the game. He finished 4-for-13. “He’s a good set shooter,” Behnke said. “We tried to contest him, make him take rushed, off-balanced shots. That’s hard to do with a set shooter.” Behnke, meanwhile, made 3-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points, six rebounds and five steals. He was joined in double figures by Ian McDonald, who recorded 15 points, nine rebounds and one block. McDonald also drew the tough assignment of defending Harford Tech center Devonte Bundley, who was limited to five rebounds, four points and three assists. “I tried to get in front of him,” McDonald said. “I tried to deflect the pass, and we had a guard double down to help out.” Also for the Indians, Aaron Owens contributed eight points and seven rebounds and Gannon Irrgang tallied six points, five assists and two steals. West notched 14 points, five rebounds and three assists for the Cobras (5-8, 3-5), while Isaiah Gills added seven rebounds and five points. North East’s win came one day after suffering a heartbreaking 63-62 loss to Patterson Mill. If the Indians want to achieve their goal of winning the Susquehanna Division title, they can’t afford another hiccup. “It was important for us to rebound with this win to go for the division and (UCBAC) titles,” Behnke said. -- cecilwhig.com

01/26 - Eagles earn rare sweep

It’s rare for the Bohemia Manor boys’ basketball team to defeat Elkton. A sweep? That’s cause for celebration, which is exactly what the Eagles did after staving off the visiting Golden Elks for a 54-53 overtime victory on Monday. “This is a dream-come-true,” Bo Manor senior Seth Grimes said. “We haven’t beaten Elkton since I was a freshman. To sweep them, this is a great win to go out with. Hopefully, they can do it again next year.” It looked as if the Eagles (5-9) would win the game going away, as they forced 17 turnovers in the first 12 minutes. The Golden Elks played most of the first half without junior guard Gaston Tillery, who sat in foul trouble. They traveled five times during the opening half, as Bo Manor traped and pressed its way to a 29-10 lead with one minute left in the second quarter. “I don’t know what went wrong in the first half,” Tillery said. “I thought we’d come in with all the momentum (after Thursday’s win over Perryville).” Led by Tillery’s 13 points, five assists and two steals, the Golden Elks (4-8) stormed back in the second half to send the game into overtime tied at 48. In the extra session, Bo Manor’s lead grew to 54-50 after Grimes fed Cameron Blackiston with 28 seconds left. Elkton senior Zach Tuckmantel then hit a pair of free throws, and after forcing a turnover, he was sent to the line for two more attempts. He made the first before missing the second. “We shouldn’t have lost to Bo Manor either time,” Tillery said. “I think we underestimated them again. We have to stop doing that.” Tuckmantel finished with 11 rebounds, six points and one block, while Kevin Marshall added 12 rebounds, 10 points, three blocks and one steal, Matt Armour contributed 14 rebounds, six points, four assists and two steals and Raheem Gatewood contributed 10 points, six rebounds and one block. Scott Mitchell netted six points for Elkton, which played without Michael Proctor (illness). Grimes paced the Eagles with 22 points, four assists and three steals, while Chuckie Dix added 13 points, four steals and three rebounds, Mike Wisher contributed eight points, five rebounds, two steals and one block and Tom Foard added five points. -- cecilwhig.com

01/26 - UCBAC Boys’ Basketball Power Poll

9. North East (7-6, 9) – The Indians don’t have much of a shot at winning the Susquehanna after Monday’s loss. However, their 6-0 mark against Cecil County opponents, including Elkton Christian, leaves them with bragging rights.

13. Elkton (4-8, 13) – The Golden Elks haven’t won consecutive games all season.

14. Rising Sun (3-10, 14) – The Tigers snapped their seven-game skid with a 60-47 victory over Bo Manor on Wednesday. Did Friday’s loss to Harford Tech start another? -- cecilwhig.com

01/24 - SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL CORNISH

Up in the stands of Parkside High School's gym sat a group of supporters for a Rams basketball player: The Larry Cornish Support Group. The group goes home and away games to see the senior play. To show their support, the group even waves a two-sided sign with the phrases "Larry, You're my hero," on one side and "Dunk it Larry" on the other. The sign was created by Parkside students Logan Webster and Jess Lichty, who said they were looking to see the 6-foot-4-inch Cornish dunk the ball. "He's done it once this season, but we missed it," Lichty said. "When he does it, we're gonna go crazy." -- delmarvanow.com

01/23 - Snow Hill beats buzzer and Wi-Hi

For the second time this week, the Snow Hill boys basketball team was involved in a game determined by a last-second shot. Once again, the Eagles were on the winning side, as Ryan Waters hit the game-winner with no time left in a 69-68 victory over Wicomico on Friday. "Coach told me to crash the boards when Keith (Jackson) went up for the shot," Waters said. "When Keith missed the shot, the ball landed in my hand, and I put it up as fast as I could." Snow Hill (12-2, 9-1 Bayside) had a lead as large as 10 points in the first half before Wi-Hi outscored the Eagles by eight points in the last six minutes of the half. The score was 27-25 Snow Hill at the intermission. The Indians (7-7, 3-7) began to swing the momentum in their favor when the Eagles' Keith Jackson was called for a defensive foul and was assessed a technical foul. The fouls led to Jackson, as he sat in foul trouble, being held scoreless in the third quarter. Wi-Hi led by as many as eight while Snow Hill's supporting cast of Chris Johnson and Mike Jones combined for 11 third-quarter points to keep them in the game. "It was really important that we had to step up our game with Keith and Ryan on the bench," said Johnson, who finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds. "We didn't want to lose." Wi-Hi was in control of the game throughout the fourth quarter, but Jackson took over, scoring 16 of his 27 points, including two game-tying free throws with less than a minute left. Wi-Hi took the lead when Zamar Collins scored his only basket of the game and made a free throw. With 13.7 second left and trailing 68-67, the Eagles went the length of the court, and after Jackson's miss, Waters put the ball into the basket, but not without controversy. The referees were split on whether Waters' shot was good; it was disputed whether the ball appeared to be in his hand when the red light went off. Wi-Hi coach Butch Waller said that while postgame replays show that the ball didn't leave Waters' hand before the red light, his team will need to have a short memory. "I told the kids don't look to blame it on somebody else," Waller said. "If we made those foul shots and didn't miss those four layups at the end of the game, we wouldn't have had to worry about it." -- delmarvanow.com

01/22 - Elks earn ‘payback’

The Elkton boys’ basketball team isn’t used to losing to Cecil County teams. The lone county squad in the Chesapeake Division, the Golden Elks are generally one of the top two teams in the county. Starting an inexperienced group, second-year Elkton coach Steve Wright watched his players struggle on the court during the season’s first month. Too much “me-ism,” he said after the squad’s nine-point loss to Perryville in the 14th Annual Cecil College Green-N-Gold Boys’ High School Holiday Basketball Tournament Gold Bracket Championship on Dec. 30. In that contest, the Elks struggled with turnovers (31) and free-throw shooting (10-for-27), falling to the Panthers for the second time and to a county foe for the fifth straight contest. Those losses, with the tournament game at the forefront, weighed on Elkton. On Thursday, the Golden Elks received their final chance at redemption against Perryville. It was an opportunity they refused to waste in a 64-54 road victory. “This was a big win for us,” Elkton junior Gaston Tillery said. “We’re ranked (13th) in the UCBAC, but we want to move up to the Top 10. We’ve been working hard. We wanted payback against Perryville, and we want Bo Manor on Monday.” With his team trailing 19-13 late in the first half – the Elks were on a six-minute drought since their last field goal – Tillery scored eight straight points. He finished with a game-high 23 points to go with two steals. Elkton junior Kevin Marshall, meanwhile, added 13 points, seven rebounds and one block as he put the game away with consecutive layups against the Panthers’ press in the final three minutes. “I’ve been working hard and tried to do what I could so we could win,” he said. Marshall, who watched a large portion of the tournament loss due to defensive reasons, said the team has been improving. “We played as a team,” Marshall said. “We weren’t out there playing for ourselves. We’ve come together as a team. We’re passing and making our free throws better.” The Elks (4-7) shot 13-for-27 from the line, an 11-percent improvement from their last meeting, and turned the ball over 20 times. Mark Wesley recorded eight points, four assists and four steals, Mike Proctor added nine rebounds and five points, Raheem Gatewood contributed seven points and two steals and Zach Tuckmantal chipped in five points, four rebounds and one block for Elkton. Marquis Bradley led Perryville (5-6) with 23 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal, while Daijon Caulk added 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals, James Hopkins contributed seven points and two steals, Alishawine Monk hauled in seven rebounds and Brandon Wills chipped in with six points and two steals. -- cecilwhig.com

01/22 -   Boys' Basketball Notebook

-- Looking for a spark, Elkton coach Steve Wright called up sophomore Raheem Gatewood from the JV on Jan. 15 against Bel Air. The guard provided instant scoring with a 10-point performance. He added six points against Joppatowne on Tuesday and seven more versus Perryville on Thursday. “He came in with poise and showed tenacity right from the start,” Wright said. “I think he gave us a spark when the guards saw this JV kid come in and do it.” After winning just two of their first eight games, the Golden Elks are 2-1 since Gatewood’s debut.

01/21 - Tigers end skid with win over Bo Manor

Riding a seven-game losing streak and facing its last opportunity to defeat a county rival during the first rotation, host Rising Sun played inspired basketball. The Bohemia Manor boys, dressing only eight players due to a rash of injuries and personal obligations, were not ready to play a game, Eagles coach Sandy Grimes said. The outcome was a 60-47 Tigers’ victory on Wednesday that left Bo Manor as the only winless team in the Susquehanna Division. “We came with more intensity than usual,” Rising Sun senior Aaron Bialek said. “The last few games we didn’t play well. We wanted to prove that we could win.” The Tigers (3-9 overall, 1-4 Susquehanna) won the game with their play on the perimeter, outscoring the Eagles 24-6 from beyond the arc. Bialek and sophomore Andre Moore each drained three 3-pointers, while Nick Smith connected on a pair. Moore made his first two in the opening minutes, as Rising Sun grabbed an 18-7 first-quarter lead. The advantage grew to 31-17 at halftime with the Tigers making seven long balls to that point. “It was a good night to shoot,” said Bialek, who finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists. It’s easy when you’re left wide open.” Both teams lost contests the night before. However, Bo Manor’s game went to double overtime, leaving its players with little energy. The Eagles’ zone defense was ineffective against the Tigers’ passing. “We moved the ball well,” Bialek said. “We were able to beat their zone with our passing, finding the open shots.” Moore finished with nine points, while Smith (four rebounds, two steals), Hayden Roberts (six rebounds, three assists, three steals) and Greg Allen (eight rebounds) netted eight points apiece. Daniel Ray added five points, three assists and two steals, and Dominic Massimiano scored five points. Seth Grimes recorded 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals to pace Bo Manor (4-8, 0-5), while Kellan Shitama added 10 points and two steals, Tom Foard finished with nine points and four rebounds and D.J. Dunlap contributed three steals and three assists. The Eagles take another shot at their first division win on Friday when they travel to Fallston, while Rising Sun battles Harford Tech the same day. -- cecilwhig.com

01/20 - Finding reinforcements

Rising Sun coach Mike Miller has been looking for another scorer to compliment center Greg Allen. Andre Moore answered Miller’s call, netting 12 points in Rising Sun’s 53-47 boys’ basketball loss to visiting North East on Tuesday. “They all have the ability to score,” Miller said. “Andre is a great shooter. He attacks the rim well, and he can get a shot off against taller defenders. He’s not afraid to bang around.” Moore, who stands 5-foot-5, made all three 3-pointers he attempted, including his second half-court buzzer beater of the season. Allen, the team’s leading scorer, finished with 15 points on 4-for-6 shooting. However, it was rebounding where the 6-4 junior struggled, hauling in just five boards against Indians senior Ian McDonald. “I tried to get inside, get position and box out,” said McDonald, who grabbed 11 rebounds. “Even on offense, I faked one way to get in position.” McDonald recorded eight points and one block, while Gannon Irrgang contributed nine points and six rebounds, Aaron Owens chipped in with six points, one block and one steal and Mark McEvoy finished with four steals. Alex Behnke netted a game-high 23 points to go with his six rebounds, four blocks, three assists and three steals. Behnke, who made 3-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc, drained three straight shots from long range in the first quarter to give North East (6-5 overall, 2-2 Susquehanna) a 13-7 advantage, a lead it held until the junior went to the bench in foul trouble with six minutes, 38 seconds remaining in the third. However, the Tigers (2-9, 0-4) failed to capitalize, as the Indians increased their lead by one point during the seven minutes Behnke sat. “We always have one down quarter in every game,” Miller said. “It’s all about focus. We’re working on it.” Behnke’s return almost wasn’t enough to secure a victory for North East, which watched Rising Sun cut its lead to three with two minutes left. It then made just 3-of-7 free throws to close the contest, but the Tigers’ inability to score gave the Indians the victory. “We’ve played better,” McDonald said. “We didn’t keep up the intensity at all and we struggled with our free-throw shooting again, but we pulled it out.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/20 - No. 3 Joppatowne 84, Elkton 65

Ernest Hawkins scored 14 points to lead the Mariners (10-2 overall, 3-1 Chesapeake), while Dominic Harper added 10 points and four assists and Shendell Chase and Bryan Corbin netted nine points apiece. Dimitrius Jelen contributed eight points and four steals. Gaston Tillery recorded 13 points, three steals and three assists to pace the Golden Elks (3-7, 1-3), while Matt Armour added seven points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals, Kevin Marshall contributed 11 rebounds and seven points, Scott Mitchell netted 12 points and Nate Parker and Raheem Gatewood finished with six points apiece. 01/20 - Decatur boys hoops downs JMB

The Stephen Decatur boys basketball team, propelled by 10 second-quarter points from Cedric Johnson, overcame an early deficit Tuesday to defeat James M. Bennett 63-54. Johnson took over the game with less than five minutes remaining in the second quarter, outscoring the Clippers 12-1 to end the half. "Cedric is a gifted player," Decatur coach Travis Lloyd said. "He's probably played more basketball than the rest of our team combined. He already has a state championship under his belt, and he's been a really good addition to the team this year. He shows a lot of leadership on the floor. It's like having another coach out there." After jumping out to an 11-2 lead in the first quarter, the Seahawks (11-2, 8-1 Bayside) seemed to relax just slightly and the Clippers took advantage. With a little less than two minutes remaining in the opening quarter, Ladaris Griss scored back-to-back baskets for the Clippers before teammate Jason Talley knocked down a long-range jumper to cut the Decatur lead to 11-8 after one quarter. The Clippers (5-7, 3-5) continued their hot streak into the second quarter, claiming a 15-11 advantage shortly into the period. However, the Clippers would only collect one more point in the half, as Johnson single-handedly brought his team back and staked them to a 23-16 lead at the intermission. After the break, the Clippers did themselves no favors, as they turned the ball over three straight times, allowing Decatur to extend its lead. Johnson, who scored a game-high 19 points, and the Seahawks would never look back, as they tallied 20 points in both the third and fourth quarters. -- delmarvanow.com

01/18 - Spotlight Players

Boys’ Basketball:  Gaston Tillery, Elkton

The junior guard recorded 10 points, three steals and two assists in a loss to Aberdeen on Tuesday and added another 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in a 71-57 victory over Bel Air on Friday. The win was the Golden Elks’ first of 2010 and first in the Chesapeake Division this season. “Everybody’s buying into the program, him especially,” Elkton coach Steven Wright said. “I’m looking for guards to grow into the system, and he has done that. His commitment and dedication to the program are showing on the basketball court.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/17 - Elks earn first Chesapeake win

Junior Gaston Tillery scored 20 points to lead Elkton to a 71-57 come-from-behind victory over Bel Air in Chesapeake Division boys’ basketball action on Friday. After trailing for most of the first half, the Golden Elks (3-6 overall, 1-2 division) switched into a full-court man-to-man press for the majority of the second half and took control of the game, forcing 10 turnovers and several rushed shots. “That was our game plan in the second half, to press them,” Tillery said. “We knew that they didn’t have any real ball handlers, so we wanted to take advantage of that.” Elkton erupted for 27 points in the final frame after entering the period facing a one-point deficit. The Elks shot 8-for-10 from the field in the quarter and also converted on 10-of-16 free throws. Center Kevin Marshall scored all eight of his points in the final stanza and added two blocks. Tillery scored seven points in the quarter, highlighted by an impressive play in which he recorded the steal at the defensive end, dribbled coast-to-coast and completed the fast break with an around-the-back move before finishing with a strong layup. “We have been working all year to get that connection with everybody working together, but it has been hard because people have been in and out of the lineup,” Elkton’s Scott Mitchell said. “It all came together in the fourth quarter. We got that energy, and we started doing our thing.” Mitchell finished with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Matt Armour contributed 13 points, four boards and three assists, Raheem Gatewood added 10 points and four rebounds and Michael Proctor came off the bench to pull down a team-high seven rebounds to go with his six points. Elkton tallied seven assists after the break, as the squad employed a more team-focused effort than the first half. “The Aberdeen game really showed us that we needed to start moving the ball around more,” Tillery said. “Coach calls it ‘me-ism,’ when we want to ball-hog or take shots that aren’t open. So we decided that we have to change it up and pass to win. You know, share.” The Bobcats (0-11, 0-4) were led by Dezmon Hall’s 27 points and four steals. Zach Nadolny scored 16 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds. Bel Air led by as much as 12 in the game, but the Elks went on a 14-3 run to end the first half down 30-29, and then used a 9-2 start to the fourth quarter to retake the lead for good. “The first quarter has been good for us all season,” Elkton coach Steven Wright said. “We could start a game, but we couldn’t finish a game. We finally finished a game. We won this one as a team. I’m happy for us to get the Bel Air win because it is a league game, but also because they are in our playoff bracket, so it was a very important game.” The Golden Elks travel to Joppatowne on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. The Bobcats face Edgewood on the road on Friday at 6:45 p.m. -- cecilwhig.com

01/17 - Indians hold on vs. Eagles

In an attempt to solve its foul-shooting woes, the North East boys’ basketball team spent 45 minutes working on free throws in one practice last week. Despite the extra session, the Indians missed all four foul shots they attempted during the final minute of a 53-51 victory over host Bohemia Manor on Friday. “This is a tough place to play,” North East coach David Huff said. “It’s a small gym and a loud crowd. We were lucky to come out of here with a win.” The Indians (5-5 overall, 1-2 Susquehanna) earned the victory thanks to the defense of Gannon Irrgang and Alex Behnke, who smothered Eagles guard Seth Grimes and blocked his shot with the clock running out. “How do you not get that call at the end of the game?” Bo Manor coach Sandy Grimes questioned following the contest. Not only would a basket have tied the game, it would have given Seth Grimes the UCBAC’s first 30-point performance of the season. He finished with 28 points, five rebounds and four steals. Grimes made 8-of-14 field-goal attempts, including 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. He also made 8-of-9 from the line. “He’s a good player,” Huff said. “He can pass, shoot, drive and makes his free throws. We tried multiple players on him, but he kept scoring.” Mike Wisher (11 points, eight rebounds, three blocks and two steals) and Chuckie Dix (six points and four rebounds) provided the Eagles with a lift on the scoreboard, while Brian Lapkiewicz hauled in six rebounds off the bench. “We’re improving,” Sandy Grimes said. “We didn’t see the results with a win, but we played well enough to earn the win.” One main reason Bo Manor (4-6, 0-3) was unable to pick up the victory was Behnke, who finished with 17 points, five rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Ian McDonald (15 points, 13 rebounds and one steal), Aaron Owens (11 points, eight rebounds and four steals) and Irrgang (seven rebounds, four assists and one steal) also provided a lift for the Indians. It was the second time North East pulled out a two-point victory in as many meetings. The Indians earned a 33-31 win in the Green-N-Gold Green Bracket Championship Game at Cecil College on Dec. 30. “We played better,” Huff said. “We handled their pressure and did better against their 1-3-1 zone and man defense. We also pushed the ball up the court.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/15 - 'Good things' happen for JMB

Thursday night saw Dean Sullivan do something that he's never done before, as he skippered the James M. Bennett Clippers boys basketball team to a 67-55 victory over Wicomico. "This is my fourth year coaching, and we haven't beat Wi-Hi since I've been coaching," Sullivan said. "So this is obviously an emotional win for us and our seniors." Bennett (5-7 4-6 Bayside) came out of the gate with a lot of energy, holding a lead the entire first quarter and into the second frame. The Clippers' Ladaris Griss set the tone, scoring the team's opening six points. The forward would go on to tally a team-high 16 points. Bennett's lead would grow to six points in the second quarter, at 20-14, when the Clippers' Ryan Holland cut along the baseline and finished his layup near the rim. But from that point on, Wi-Hi (6-5 3-4 Bayside) went on an 18-8 run to end the half, entering the break with a 32-28 lead. The run was capped off by two 3-pointers from Kendall Collins and two layups from Marquis Ewell, who finished with a game-high 20 points. The Indians continued their run after the intermission, stretching their advantage to eight points. Bennett would cut into the lead by the end of the third quarter, trailing by two points going into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Bennett decided to run a full-court press that forced the Indians into numerous turnovers. The Clippers would grab the lead for good off of one of those turnovers, as Bennett's Libeyarent Dorman got into the lane and got fouled before converting both of his free throws to give his squad a one-point lead. Bennett would go on to close out the game on a 22-11 run to salt away their first victory against Wi-Hi in a long time. "They went on a little run, we made some adjustments at halftime, and then put a press on in the fourth quarter, and it worked out well for us tonight," Sullivan said. "We've dropped two close games this week, and I told our boys if we continue to keep working, good things will happen, and good things happened tonight. I'm just so happy for our team. Our seniors have been wanting this Wi-Hi victory for a long time." -- delmarvanow.com

Alex Behnke recorded 13 points (four in the second half), six rebounds, four steals, three assists and one block to pace the Indians (4-5, 0-2), while Ian McDonald added seven rebounds and two steals, Mark McEvoy contributed four points and one steal and Aaron Owens chipped in with four points, three rebounds and one steal. North East led 20-16 at the half but scored just two third-quarter points. -- cecilwhig.com

01/12 - Pocomoke's keeping Talley

Coming off its first loss of the season, when the team fell 74-55 to Wicomico, the Pocomoke Warriors boys basketball team rebounded nicely, defeating the James M. Bennett Clippers 65-55. The Clippers trailed by just three points at halftime; however, the Warriors ended the third quarter on a 13-6 run, pulling away from the home squad and never looking back. "It was a tough one that we needed coming off that loss on Thursday," said Pocomoke head coach Derrick Fooks. "It's a tough place to play here at Bennett, but it's nice to come out of here with a 10 point win." The Warriors' (9-1, 5-1 Bayside) up-tempo pace caused major problems for Bennett (4-6, 2-4 Bayside) early on in the contest, as the Clippers struggled to get into a rhythm on offense, oftentimes taking the first open shot that became available. Pocomoke would leak a player out toward its goal after a Bennett missed shot attempt, securing the defensive rebound and setting up easy fast-break opportunities. Bennett seemed to settle down as the game went along, partly due to the squad doing a better job, of feeding the ball to the teams best scorer, Jason Talley. Talley, who led all scorers with 18 points in the game, was a force down low when he got the basketball; however, when he didn't get touches, Bennett struggled to score. "You can't really play (Talley) one on one, so we decided to play zone on him," said Fooks. "We tried to keep our perimeter and keep him off the glass and out of the way." Pocomoke's best defense against Talley was their offense however, and the Warriors' aggressiveness with the ball got Talley into foul trouble, forcing him to take a spot on the bench. With Talley out of the game carrying four fouls in the third quarter, the Warriors went on a 13-6 run to end the period. "On Thursday we were very unaggressive," said Fooks. "Tonight our main goal was to come out and be aggressive going to the basket, and it worked out for us." Pocomoke point guard Jeff Young and center Denzel Timmons teamed up to lead in scoring, tying for a team high with 16 points apiece. -- delmarvanow.com

01/10 - Games of the Week - What to watch for this week

Boys’ Basketball:  Bel Air at Elkton When: 7 p.m. Friday

What Bel Air needs to do to win: Find balanced scoring. Zack Nadolny and Dezmond Hall have each put together solid offensive efforts throughout the season. Rarely, however, have the two done so in the same contest. If the Bobcats are to end their losing streak, which stands at nine as of Sunday night, they must improve upon their 44.9 point per game average.

What Elkton needs to do to win: Limit turnovers and make free throws. The Golden Elks have struggled in both areas recently, causing their offense to stall often. Elkton must also win the fourth quarter in an attempt to avoid another close loss.

What to expect: The winner of this contest gains the upper hand in avoiding the Chesapeake Division’s basement. Both squads have struggled this year, even against Susquehanna teams. Look for the host Elks to come away with the victory and their first division win. -- cecilwhig.com

01/10 - Spotlight Players - Who were last week’s top players?

Boys’ Basketball:  Greg Allen, Rising Sun

The center recorded a pair of double-doubles for the Tigers last week. He recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds in a 76-45 loss to Havre de Grace on Monday and 17 points and 11 rebounds in a 64-39 defeat to Patterson Mill on Tuesday. He combined to score 41.7 percent of the team’s points during the week. “Against Havre de Grace, Greg left everything he had out on the court that night, to the point that he exhausted himself,” Rising Sun coach Mike Miller said. “Havre de Grace had three big guys, and Greg worked very hard. One fouled out, but they threw two more at him. It was a tough night for him. He had to learn how three different guys would play him, and he did well. “Patterson Mill was another tough game, but Greg continues to do his job. He scores the basketball when he gets the opportunity, he’s improved on his free throws, he’s getting after offensive and defensive rebounds more than he was earlier in the season and he pushes himself in practice all the time. He wants to win, so he’ll do whatever it takes.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/08 - Wi-Hi hands Pocomoke its first loss

The Wicomico boys basketball team ended Pocomoke's undefeated season with a 74-55 victory Thursday night on the road. The Indians' Marquis Ewell had 24 points. 01/08 - Boys' Basketball Notebook

-- North East junior Alex Behnke picked up his second straight Green-N-Gold MVP award last month. In the Indians’ 55-41 loss to Fallston on Tuesday, he also earned the respect of Cougars coach Mike Getz. “He’s one of the top players in the whole conference,” Getz said. “We’ve already played basically all the top teams in Harford County, and he’s definitely one of the top players in our conference, for sure.” While the 2009 All-County player struggled with his shooting in the loss, making just 6-of-15 attempts, he made an impact in other areas, adding 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists to his 18 points. For the season, Behnke is averaging 17.1 points per game. -- cecilwhig.com

01/07 - No. 2 C.M. Wright 65, Elkton 47

Josh Keys scored 22 to lift the Mustangs (6-3), while Matt McNeely netted 10 points, Chris Bays added nine points and four assists and Derrick Vogel recorded eight points and four steals. 01/06 - Mardela Springs holds off Wicomico High

Heading into the Christmas break, Mardela coach Stephen Re wanted his team to be ready for the toughest part of their conference schedule by facing top flight competition. The test paid off for the Warriors as they held off the Wicomico Indians 66-60 Tuesday night. "I thought if we could compete during the (NHSCA) holiday (tournament) it would get them prepared for anything they would see over the rest of the year," Re said. Mardela's Kody Jacoby had the hot hand in the first quarter with 10 points out of the gate as the Warriors (3-5, 3-2 Bayside) had a two-point edge at 17-15. The second quarter saw the Indians (5-3, 2-3) held to 13 points as the Warriors pushed their lead up to nine going into halftime. Wi-Hi was able to outscore the Warriors 19-11 in the third quarter and even tied the game before heading to the fourth quarter down 48-47. "One of the things we've been struggling with in all of our losses this year has been when we come out in the third quarter we seem to be flat," Re said. "We do good things in the first half, but when we come out knowing that team is going to make a push at you, we just don't respond very well. That's something we really have to work on." The fourth quarter saw Wicomico take their first lead since the start of the game, but Mardela ended the game with a 16-9 run capped by seven points by Jacoby. Jacoby led all scorers with 28 points. While not taking anything away from Mardela's effort, Wi-Hi coach Butch Waller said his team's inability to convert high percentage shots was a factor in the loss. "Mardela's a good team and well-coached and Jacoby is probably the best player in the county," he said. "But when you miss 16 layups and you're 16-30 at the free throw line in your own gym, that spells disaster." For Mardela, Deiray Johnson was second in scoring with 16 points. Wi-Hi was led by Zamar Collins and Marquis Ewell, who each scored 19. -- delmarvanow.com

01/06 - Indians struggle in loss to division rivals

North East struggled with the three P’s against visiting Fallston on Tuesday: patience, passing and press-break. Due to their deficiencies in those three key areas, the Indians suffered a 55-41 boys’ basketball defeat in their Susquehanna Division opener. The Cougars (3-6 overall, 2-0 division) took a 10-2 first-quarter lead, using their full-court press to earn five steals in the frame. “We just didn’t make good passes,” North East coach David Huff said. “We haven’t practiced against it much, and the kids were a little out of shape. We’ll get it fixed.” When the Indians (4-4, 0-1) did push the ball across half court, they struggled with their shots, making just 2-of-6 field-goal attempts in the opening quarter. Part of the problem, Huff said, was coming off winter break. “Offensively, we need some work,” he said. “They looked horrible, not taking their time, rushing their shots and taking off-balance shots. We haven’t practiced much in the last couple of weeks, and it showed.” Despite the slow start, North East only trailed 23-16 at the half. However, in the third quarter, Fallston began to pull away. The Cougars, who struggled with their shots in the first half, made all seven of their field-goal attempts in the third period. In the fourth, the Indians, who trailed by as many as 19, implemented their own full-court press. However, Fallston turned the pressure into numerous fast-break buckets. “Our middle guys would come up too far into the backcourt, and they would break down the side,” North East junior Alex Behnke said. “They would throw it out, and it’s 2-on-1 and 3-on-1. It’s just lay-ups.” Behnke finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks for the Indians, while Ian McDonald added 12 points and eight rebounds, Aaron Owens contributed six points and one block and Jon Drone chipped in with two blocks and one steal. “I think they’re going to be in the top part of the Susquehanna Division,” Cougars coach Mike Getz said. “They play very hard and very determined. They don’t appear to be very deep, but I know they can hang with the top Harford County schools. I knew it’d be a battle. I was impressed with them.” Tyler Smith led Fallston with 14 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block, while Sean Murphy added 16 points and four rebounds, Ben Holehouse contributed 11 points and two assists and Garrett Fender chipped in with seven rebounds, six points, five blocks and two assists. “North East played very well,” Getz said. “They played very hard until the end. We’re happy to get out of here with a ‘W.’ ” -- cecilwhig.com

Reggie Daniels scored 16 points and J.J. Butler added 13 points to lift the Huskies (3-5 overall, 1-0 Susquehanna), while Mike Eckart, Dante Johnson and Jordan Zang netted seven each. Greg Allen recorded 17 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tigers ( 2-6, 0-1), while Aaron Bialek (two steals) and Hayden Roberts added six points each, Andre Moore netted five points and Dominic Massimiano chipped in with four points. 12/31 - North Caroline cruises over Indian River

Indian River had no answers for the problems North Caroline imposed upon them Wednesday at the NHSCA High School Basketball Festival. The Indians struggled, breaking the Bulldogs' press and failed to curb North Caroline's hot shooting, as Indian River fell 91-54. "If you play defense, you won't have to have an offense, because your defense is going to create offense," said North Caroline head coach Gary Gould. "That's all we look for, and that's how we are playing so well right now. It's because of our defense." The Indians held an early 5-4 lead in the first quarter, but it would be short-lived as the Bulldogs went on a 17-5 run to end the quarter, giving North Caroline a 21-10 lead after the opening eight minutes. Indian River's struggles continued in the second quarter, as North Caroline would score more points in the second period (26) than the Indians would tally in the entire first half (24). "We came out a little lackadaisical energy wise," said Gould. "But we turned it on in the end, and the defense once again did what we expect it to do." Ka-Ron Bell led the Bulldogs scoring attack with 21 points, nearly all of which came off of shots from within 10 feet of the rim. Herb Dennis had his second outstanding game of the tournament, as the senior guard was a pest on defense and poured in 18 points. Jack Cole led his Indians squad, as the forward scored 20 points. Even with a sizable lead, the Bulldogs never let up, running their full court press until the start of the fourth quarter when they removed their starting five. But even North Caroline's reserves were able to press and create several turnovers, not allowing Indian River to ever feel completely comfortable on the offensive end of the floor. "We wear teams down with our conditioning," said Gould. "If we continue to run, teams will stop and that's when the score gets like it (was today.) I'm happy with the way we played, because we are continuing to win. We are learning along the way so maybe it will help us in the end." -- delmarvanow.com

12/30 - Parkside holds on for the win

After leading by as much as 18 points, Parkside had to convert their free throws down the stretch to weather a fourth quarter rally by Queen Anne, as the Rams defeated the Lions 61-52 at the NHSCA High School Basketball Festival. "Give (Queen Anne) a lot of credit -- they came back and had more energy than we did," said Parkside head coach David Byer. "They got the loose balls and hit some shots. It was closer than nine points there in the end." The Parkside (3-4) lead seemed tenuous in the fourth quarter, the Rams' 56-38 margin with under five-and-a-half minutes began to disappear when shooting went stone cold. Queen Anne seized the opportunity, going on a 12-0 scoring run to pull within six points with less than 90 seconds to play. However, the Rams were able to hit their foul shots to secure the win. "We were up 15, 16, 17 points in the third quarter and then we got a little lackadaisical," said Byer. "We didn't execute for about a seven minute period. They hit some shots, we changed to a zone defense and then didn't get out to challenge their shots. It got back to a game at the end and we had to hit our free throws." The Rams built a 13-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and took a 27-15 margin into halftime, largely due to the number of turnovers they forced the Lions to commit. Parkside used a variety of three-quarter and full court presses to pressure Queen Anne into bad passes and give-aways. "We utilized our height well tonight," said Byer. "I thought our press really hurt them at times, and created some easy baskets for us." Parkside junior guard Paul Butler led the Rams' attack with 16 points, while teammate Devonte Walke added 15. Freshman Justin Ramey paced the Queen Anne attack with a game high 18 points. With the Rams reeling in the fourth, Ramey found himself at the line with a chance to capitalize on a crucial Parkside mistake. With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Queen Anne's Lloyd Bramble missed an open three-point shot. Parkside's Larry Cornish grabbed the rebound and quickly threw an outlet pass to teammate Joal Baily. Baily, all alone on the fast break, went up to dunk the ball and put an exclamation point on the Rams win, however the ball bounced out and Baily received a technical foul for hanging on the rim. The technical was Baily's fifth foul and disqualified him from the contest, while also sending the Lions' Ramey to the free throw line. Ramey hit both of his attempts to cut Parkside's lead to 56-50. With the ball Queen Anne had the chance to make it a one possession game, however a three point shot from Ramey rattled out and signaled an end to the Lions come back attempt. -- delmarvanow.com

12/29 - Local contests carry intrigue

While most of the attention in Cecil County the next two days will be on the Green-N-Gold Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Cecil College, I’m intrigued by G4 Madness in Aberdeen. The tournament pits four of the UCBAC’s best teams against each other with the host Eagles facing Edgewood at 7 tonight. Aberdeen is 1-6. However, slow starts in the past haven’t prevented the Eagles from claiming their annual place in the conference championship every year since its inception in 2003-04. Top-ranked Aberdeen has faced just one UCBAC team this year, edging Fallston, of the Susquehanna Division, 62-60 on Dec 14. The Cougars, meanwhile, could provide some insight into this tournament, having faced three of the four teams. Fallston also fell to No. 3 Joppatowne (4-1) 60-55 on Dec. 11 and 52-41 to No. 5 Havre de Grace (5-0) on Dec. 18. The Cougars were scheduled to play No. 4 Edgewood (4-1) on Dec. 21, but the contest was postponed due to inclement weather. All four teams will battle during Chesapeake Division play, but this week’s tournament will provide our first look into how they stack up. Of course, the Green-N-Gold carries plenty of intrigue of its own. With Tome entering the mix for the first time, seven of the county’s eight teams will be on display. The Titans open against Bohemia Manor, which earned a 63-34 victory at Tome on Dec. 4. While the Titans likely won’t earn a win in this tournament, it brings up one interesting thought. Could we ever see a Cecil County Championship at Cecil College? Think about it. According to the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association, teams are allowed 20 regular games plus two holiday tournament contests or 19 and three. If the five public schools agreed to schedule just 19 games, they’d be allowed to play in an eight-team tournament. If West Nottingham Academy was willing to play in the Green-N-Gold in place of Queen Anne’s next year, Seahawks Athletic Director Ed Durham could then run an official county championship every holiday season. No more would there be a Green Bracket Champion or a Gold Bracket winner. Instead, local squads would battle over three days to discover which is the best in the county. Of course, we don’t have a county championship, but there will be eight basketball games in North East during the next two days involving seven local teams. Hopefully, those contests provide plenty of storylines to keep people talking until the regular season heats up in two months. -- cecilwhig.com

12/29 - North Caroline downs Woodbridge, sets a goal to attend states

North Caroline senior guard Herb Dennis put on a show Monday against Woodbridge in the NHSCA High School Basketball Festival, scoring 35 points to lead the Bulldogs to a 67-60 comeback victory. "I think (Dennis) is probably one of the better guards in the Bayside and on the Eastern Shore," said North Caroline head coach Gary Gould. "In the transition game and the up-and-down game he's really tough to guard." Woodbridge witnessed Dennis' allusiveness with the ball, as the senior guard penetrated deep into the paint consistently against the Blue Raiders. Dennis drove both to his left and his right, either finishing at the rim or drawing the foul from the Woodbridge defense. "I had to will my team and show them that we are anxious to win and we can't quit," said Dennis. "I had to take over the game, show my team that we have to be aggressive and get to the free throw line." After registering only two points in the first quarter, Dennis scored North Caroline's first seven points in the second frame. Even though Dennis would go on to score a total of 11 points in the quarter, it still wasn't enough to get his Bulldogs squad over the hump, and they went into the halftime intermission trailing the Blue Raiders, 24-20. Woodbridge was able to stretch out its lead in the third quarter, increasing its advantage to an eight point margin four separate times. The Blue Raiders' Gregory Seay gave his team their biggest lead of the game at 44-34 with just under two minutes remaining in the quarter, grabbing an offense rebound and scored two of his 15 points. But North Caroline would not go away, and they trimmed the Woodbridge lead to 45-41 going into the final quarter of play. The Bulldogs started the frame with a 7-2 run, highlighted by a breakaway dunk from Ka-Ron Bell that gave North Caroline its first lead of the game. Woodbridge would briefly reclaim the lead at 54-53, but on the next trip down the court, Dennis connected on a fade away jumper while getting fouled. Dennis would convert the free throw and his team would not look back. "We feel as though our conditioning is better than everyone else's and the style of play that we have wears teams down," said Gould. "Our goal is to go to states. We have to play better than this if we want to go to states, but I thought we did all right today." -- delmarvanow.com

12/24 - Snow Hill finds its offense

Run your offense. That's the mantra Snow Hill boys basketball coach Allen Miller stresses every game to his team. After trailing by as much as 10 points early Wednesday, the Eagles found a way to finally run their offense in a 51-43 victory over Parkside. "(Our team) refused to run their offense early on," Miller said. "If we ran it, we would've had a five easy layups." Parkside (1-4, 0-4 Bayside) started out of the gate fast, with a 14-4 run in first quarter, as Devonta Walker scored nine points. The Rams limited the Eagles (5-2, 4-1) to 16 first-half points and held the tandem of Ryan Waters and Keith Jackson to a combined 12 points. "Our game plan was to control Waters and Jackson, and we were able to do that in the beginning," Parkside coach Dave Byer said. "We just weren't able to do that in the second half." Miller, while not thrilled with his team's offense in the first half, praised the Eagles' defensive effort at the intermission. "The defense was great," he said. "I told them to be able to hold them to only 22 points at the half wasn't the issue, it was the offense." In the second half, the Eagles continued to play strong defense as they began running their offense. The Eagles outscored the Rams 13-4 in the third quarter and their comeback was capped by a Waters 3-pointer that gave them the lead for good. "(At the half), Coach told us to slow the pace down and run our set plays," Waters said. In the final quarter, Waters and Jackson combined for 20 of Snow Hill's 22 points. Parkside got as close as 43-39, but Waters was able to put the game out of reach with six consecutive free throws. Waters finished with 24 points and four rebounds, while Jackson added 15 points and nine rebounds. Walker had 13 points and 21 rebounds, and Jeff Jamerson tallied 11 points and five boards for Parkside. -- delmarvanow.com

12/18 - Snow Hill boys rout Bennett, 65-41

Facing its second 3A team this week, the Snow Hill boys basketball team returned to the friendlier confines of its gym against James M. Bennett. The home-court advantage benefited the Eagles, as they defeated the Clippers 65-41 on Thursday. "It's not an easy place to play [if you're an opposing team]," Snow Hill coach Allen Miller said. "The court is smaller, and it makes it difficult for offenses." The Eagles (4-2, 3-1 Bayside) took it to the Clippers early, as Snow Hill outscored Bennett 21-9 in the first quarter, led by a combined 16 points from Keith Jackson and Ryan Waters. In the second quarter, the Clippers (2-3, 1-2) outscored the Eagles but were only able to make the deficit 32-21 going into halftime. At the start of the second half, Snow Hill continued applying defensive pressure against Bennett, holding the Clippers to five points in the third quarter. On the offensive end for the Eagles, Waters scored 13 of his 25 points in the game. "Ryan (Waters) is a heck of a shooter," Bennett coach Dean Sullivan said. "We knew we had to stop Keith and Ryan and that was our No. 1 priority. We definitely didn't take care of that." With a 50-26 lead starting the fourth quarter, Snow Hill's Jordan Waters, Raheem Hammond and Chris Johnson tallied 10 of the 15 points scored in the final quarter. Miller said scoring was "pretty well balanced" Thursday after recently stating the need for the supporting cast to help relieve the pressure on Ryan Waters and Jackson. "Everybody contributed tonight," Miller said. Jackson finished with 11 points and Jordan Waters had 10 points for Snow Hill. Bennett's Ladaris Gibbs had 11 points and 14 rebounds and was the only Clipper to score in double digits. -- delmarvanow.com

The Indians (1-2) never led by more than eight points but remained on top for most of the contest. “It was the best game I’ve ever been a part of,” North East coach Dave Huff said. “The fans for both sides were electric, and it was a good game the whole time.” The Golden Elks (1-2) used a defensive adjustment to fight back from a six-point halftime deficit, taking a 42-41 lead with six minutes, 20 seconds to play. “In the second half, we went to our man-to-man because I saw that they didn’t have that point guard, that dribbler, so we put more pressure on them,” Elkton coach Steven Wright said. “I know you can’t keep a good shooting team down for too long, and I didn’t want to stay in that zone and have them come out on fire, so we made the switch.” The only lead of the game for the Elks was short-lived, however, as the Indians responded with a Gannon Irrgang lay-up on the ensuing possession to spark a 9-0 North East run. “All year long our offense has been struggling, but we worked really hard tonight and our offense just clicked the whole game,” Irrgang said. “We were all moving and we were all getting open. “Everybody in the county says, ‘If you shut down Alex, you shut down North East.’ So if Alex isn’t doing well and our other players step up, it just shows that we’re the best team in the league.” Irrgang finished with 10 points, four assists and three blocks as the Indians overcame an off night for Behnke (5-16 shooting, 0-5 3-pointers) and foul trouble for forward Ian McDonald. Mark McEvoy also contributed 10 points for North East, finishing 8-for-8 from the free-throw line. Elkton was led by Mike Procter (16 points, eight rebounds), Gaston Tillery (14 points), Nate Parker (10 points) and Matt Armour (nine points, nine rebounds). The Elks scored 11 points in the final two minutes, capped by a Proctor 3-pointer with 9.9 seconds to play to make it a two-point game. “The difference in the game, I think, is that we just came out flat,” Wright said. “If we played the first half like we played the second half, we would have won. We have to work on jumping out and starting the game like we are down by five, rather than waiting until we are actually down by five before we get that sense of urgency.” Next, Elkton returns home to face Bohemia Manor, while North East hosts No. 3 Joppatowne. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday. -- cecilwhig.com

12/14 - Tigers use depth for 1st victory

With Daniel Ray, Aaron Bailek and Greg Allen all out due to injury and illness on Friday, host Rising Sun needed its young players to excel in expanded roles against Tome. Andre Moore provided a spark for the Tigers with a team-high 13 points in their 32-28 win over the Titans in non-conference boys’ basketball action. “All of us knew that we had to step it up,” Moore said. “We were a little nervous at first, but eventually, we were able to calm down and gain confidence. That allowed us to get into a rhythm.” Reserve Nick Smith also came up big for Rising Sun (1-1) with seven points, and coach Mike Miller said playing the underclassmen now might prove valuable later in the season. “We had three guys out of the starting lineup, so that kind of hurt us,” Miller said. “The advantage is that the younger guys are going to see a lot of action. That’s going to build their confidence, which clearly it did. In a way, this is going to benefit us. When it becomes stretch time, our younger guys will be just as confident as our older guys.” With the Tigers leading 23-19 midway through the fourth quarter, Smith scored five unanswered points to give his team a nine-point lead. Tome followed with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 28-26 with just over a minute remaining. After a battle on the floor, Moore was fouled, sending him to the line. He made both free throws to give Rising Sun a four-point lead, before the Titans’ Barry Gregg (16 points) made a field goal to close the gap to two with less than 30 seconds remaining. Tome had a chance to tie the game with 17 seconds left but couldn’t capitalize, which set the stage for another pair of converted foul shots by Moore to seal the victory. “I was really nervous before those free throws,” Moore said. “I just focused on getting into my rhythm and making them for my team. I was able to get a good stroke on them.” -- cecilwhig.com

12/12 - Snow Hill boys hang on to beat Wi-Hi

The Snow Hill boys basketball team had a 22-point lead in the third quarter, but barely came away with the victory Friday, defeating Wicomico 75-73. The Eagles had a 38-28 lead going into halftime and stretched the lead to 22 points, but the Indians made a second-half surge. Snow Hill's Ryan Waters scored 27 points, and Keith Jackson had 25. The Stephen Decatur boys basketball team defeated Parkside 57-30 on Thursday to remain unbeaten. The Seahawks' Cedrick Johnson scored 14 points. Mark Engle added 12 points, and Montre Andrews had 10. Jeremy Green led the Rams with 11 points, and Travis Gie scored 10. -- delmarvanow.com

12/09 - Behnke scores 24 in defeat

Junior Alex Behnke scored 16 of his 24 points in the second half, but Jamahal Ralls and the slashing Edgewood offense proved to be too much for host North East in a 73-60 boys’ basketball loss on Tuesday. The Indians (0-2 overall) dropped their second straight contest to a Chesapeake Division team to open the season. “Havre de Grace and Edgewood are really good teams,” Behnke said. “They are fast, they are quick, they can jump and I think (playing teams like that) will teach us to box out and play good defense and rotate a lot quicker (later in the season).” The Rams (2-0) forced 19 turnovers with their aggressive man-to-man defense. Behnke was held to only four shot attempts in the first half, as Edgewood built a 14-point lead at the break. “I had to create a lot (of my shooting opportunities) on my own,” Behnke said. “I think there was one or two shots where I was left open, but other than that, they are a solid team (defensively) and they can lock people down when they want to.” Behnke responded in the second half, knocking down four 3-pointers as North East tried to close the deficit. He also contributed seven steals, five rebounds and four assists. “In the locker room I told Alex, ‘You need to get the ball in your hands and shoot it,’” North East coach Dave Huff said. “He’s our best scorer, and he needs to show it out there. He definitely stepped up in the second half. He’s a great shooter, and he can take the ball to the rim once his shot starts falling. He’s just a great offensive player.” Junior Aaron Owens contributed 10 points, while senior Ian McDonald finished with eight points and eight rebounds for the Indians. Guard Rashad Wilford chipped in eight points and three blocks off the bench. Ralls contributed a team-high 22 points to go along with seven steals to lead the Rams. Seniors Dorien Rochester (four assists, four steals) and Michael Coleman (seven assists) added 15 points each. Edgewood led by as much as 20 in the second half, outscoring North East in every quarter except the third. The Indians move on to host county rival Elkton on Friday at 7 p.m. -- cecilwhig.com

12/09 - Caulk: ‘It’s personal’

After playing for Elkton a year ago, Daijon Caulk knew Tuesday’s contest was a big game. When Perryville lost its opener on Friday, the Panthers’ first intra-county boys’ basketball contest carried added significance. “This game meant everything to me,” said Caulk, who finished with 18 points, six rebounds and two assists. “It’s personal. I took it as this is the championship.” Led by Caulk’s 12-point first quarter, Perryville garnered a 71-57 victory over the host Golden Elks. Caulk ignited the large Panther contingent in the opening minute when he dunked the ball on a breakaway. The play came after a steal, one of 12 Elkton turnovers in the opening frame, leading to a 25-7 Perryville (1-1) advantage. “We were getting up the floor and sharing the ball,” Caulk said. “We were pushing it, going hard and playing defense. In the second quarter, we were lacking defense. They were getting in the middle on us.” The Golden Elks (1-1) utilized Kevin Marshall (13 points, five rebounds, three assists) during the second frame as they pulled close with a 17-6 run, eventually tying the game at 35 in the opening minute of the third quarter. “They broke our 1-3-1 (zone) and we just started getting lazy and not playing as hard as we could,” said Panthers senior Jordan Lilly, who contributed 14 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists. “We needed to start taking the ball to the hoop and stop taking dumb shots.” Perryville’s defense, which struggled in a 90-63 loss to Edgewood on Friday, regained control of the game midway through the third period. With the score tied at 36, James Hopkins (six points, four rebounds and three steals) stole the ball and scored on a breakaway, igniting a 10-0 run. “We went into Edgewood underestimating them,” Lilly said. “Not taking anything away from Edgewood, they’re a good team, but we played better against Elkton. “We all wanted this game. This is the biggest game for us all season. It decides who is the better team in the county, in my mind.” Gaston Tillery, one of four first-year players starting for the Elks, netted 14 points, while Michael Proctor added 11 points and seven rebounds and Matt Armour finished with nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. Nate Parker scored five points. While it wasn’t the result Elkton coach Stephen Wright wanted, he was pleased with aspects of the game. “I think because we’re young, we got caught up in the crowd,” Wright said. “It was packed here, so they were excited. “We showed a lot of character, so I’m happy for us. We showed one good thing; we don’t stop.”

Notes: Marquis Bradley recorded 18 points and two steals for Perryville. … The Panthers made 23 of 60 shots from the field (38 percent) and 22 of 32 free throws (69 percent). … Elkton made 21 of 59 shots from the field (36 percent) and 11 of 16 (69 percent) free throws. 03/18 - 'Sad moment' turns into fun

Although the high school basketball season officially ended last week, the Bayside Conference's best seniors had one last game to play Wednesday. After starting the game with a 21-3 run, the Bayside South easily claimed bragging rights for this season with a 87-46 victory over its North rivals in the Cliff Mister Girls Senior All-Star Game at Wicomico High School. "It was a really fun experience," Bayside South coach Kesha Cook (Mardela) said. "They were ready to learn, and they were able to gel together." The Bayside South held its counterparts scoreless for close to halfway through the first quarter, when Queen Anne's Richesha Thomas scored the North's first point with a free throw. In the second quarter, the South continued to increase its lead, with Wicomico's Ariel Duffy scoring eight of her 14 total points. James M. Bennett's Raquel Weeks scored nine of her 11 first-half points in the period. "When I thought about this game being my last one, I thought it would be a sad moment," Weeks said. "But once the game got started, it was more fun than anything else. I was also glad to get one more chance to play with [Bennett teammate] Corlee [Jackson]." In the second half, the North scored eight of the first 11 points of the third quarter, but then the South responded with an 19-7 run, led by seven points from Weeks and five points from Snow Hill's Sabrina Waters. Weeks led all scorers with 21 points, and Waters had 14. The fourth quarter saw continual swapping of players on both sides, but the South was able to push its lead up to 41 points. Bayside North coach Mark Potter said the goal for his team was to come out and have fun. "When you have different players with different styles, you just have them come out and play," he said. Cook said that despite the game being an exhibition, playing good defense and playing hard was still part of the game. "I told the girls, even though it's an all-star game, I still want to win," she said. -- delmarvanow.com

03/10 - 2 kinds of Warriors lead way

A Pocomoke player headlines this season's recently released All-Bayside South girls basketball team. Bayside South coaches named junior Kiana Sturgis the best player in the division and added her to a first-team squad that includes Mardela's Taylor Siggers and Jasmine Jones, Snow Hill's Sabrina Waters, and Parkside's Ashaneyia Hyland. On the sidelines, Mardela's Kesha Cook was named the Bayside South's top coach. While Pocomoke had a down season by its high standards -- going 18-7 and losing in the MPSSAA 1A region finals Saturday -- Sturgis excelled despite playing out of position for most of the year. "She came from playing center to point guard this year, which is quite a change in responsibility," Pocomoke coach Gail Gladding said. "It's very different from just being in the back and getting rebounds and getting lay-ups to now worrying about passing, ball-handling and running the offense. She played a lot of different roles this year from last year. She's what helped us through this season." Sturgis also had to juggle her new role on the court with being a mentor to her younger teammates. "I think a lot of girls look up to her to help them do things," Gladding said. "They looked for her leadership." Cook joined a Mardela program that was talented, but was also dealing with the death of long-time coach Barbara McCool in October. The new coach and her players quickly meshed, as the Warriors went 26-2, capturing a Bayside Conference title and gaining a spot in Friday's state semifinals. "Going into this job I was very excited and pleased to come to the team," Cook said. "I just wanted to give these girls what I knew about the game of basketball." Cook said she also knew she was going into a unique situation, having to replace a coach the players were so close with. "Part of this year was really just helping them deal with (McCool's death) and work through that," she said. Cook also showed she was willing to take some chances this year, including benching some of her key players at the start of a playoff game to allow her reserves a chance to play early meaningful minutes. "It wasn't the first time I had did that, but it was the first time I had substituted all five," she said. "I used it a motivational tool to show that our bench players that every time you're on the floor, you should be able to contribute."

03/04 - Season ends for Bennett girls hoops

The James M. Bennett girls basketball team was knocked out of the MPSSAA playoffs Wednesday, losing 72-49 to Mount Hebron in the 3A East region semifinals. The Clippers (17-7) got off to a shaky start against the Howard County team and would never recover, as they committed 19 first-half turnovers and scored only five points in the second quarter, going into half trailing 35-13. "I think the first quarter and a half we were kind of shell-shocked," Bennett coach Darren Rodgers said. "We woke up towards the end of the second quarter, and then there in the second half we played right there with them. We just got down by too much, too quick." Bennett's Corlee Jackson knotted the game at two apiece early in the first quarter with a jumper on the right side of court from 8 feet out, recording the first of her 13 points. But from that point on, the Clippers trailed, as the Vikings went on an 8-0 run and would finish the quarter holding a 16-8 lead. The second quarter was even more unkind to Bennett, as they struggled to set up their offense and create quality scoring opportunities. The Clippers struggled to solve the Vikings' full-court press, and Mount Hebron (14-8) created numerous turnovers and quickly converted them into fast break points. To their credit, the Clippers did not give up after the break and had their best quarter in the third, scoring 21 points, led by senior Raquel Weeks' eight. She finished with a team-high 15 points. However, it was too little, too late for the Clippers, and the Vikings, paced by Megan Schaaf's game-high 28 points, were just too much for the home team. "They were definitely bigger, they were definitely better set shooters," Rogers said. "Our advantage was our quickness -- we were going right around them whenever we wanted to. We just were not hitting our layups and our free throws. That killed us. If we would have got those, it would have been a ball game." -- delmarvanow.com

03/02 - Clippers advance in playoffs

The James M. Bennett girls’ basketball team cruised into the 3A East semifinal round of the state playoffs Monday, holding Stephen Decatur to just two points in the second quarter en route to a 60-26 victory. "That's one of our strengths; We have lots of speed," said Clippers head coach Darren Rogers. "We are very quick and we utilize it. We pressed the whole game." Bennett's full court press proved to be vital to the team's victory, after a slow paced first quarter which ended with both teams knotted at nine points apiece. The pressure led directly to Decatur turnovers and easy fast break points for the home team. "At the beginning, we were kind of slow," said Grace Lipinski, Clippers junior guard. "Coach gave us a pep talk and told us we really needed to step it up, and that made us step it up a lot." The second quarter was bad for the Seahawks, and the squad turned the ball over six times. Decatur guard Kylie Nottingham collected the team's only basket of the frame, going into the lane for a lay-up, and scoring two of her team-high 15 points. "We were trying to make it so that if they got the ball across half court, they would only have 10 seconds to run their offense and get one shot," said Rogers. "I thought we did that pretty well. Wherever they were is where we wanted to be." The Clippers (17-6) certainly did a good job of staying with Seahawk players, and whenever Decatur (10-12) rose up for a shot, there was a hand in their face. Bennett also did a good job of boxing out and rebounding on the defensive end, limiting Decatur to one shot per possession. In the second half, Bennett's offense came to life, and the team routinely hit jump shots that weren't falling for them in the first half, while showing a desire to get into the lane. Corlee Jackson recorded a game-high 18 points for Bennett, while teammate Raquel Weeks chipped in with 17 points. "We knew that we wanted to show the other teams in the tournament that we are really good," said Lipinski. Bennett will continue to play with home-court advantage in the next round of the playoffs, as they prepare to take on either Howard or Mount Hebron Wednesday in the regional semifinal. -- delmarvanow.com

03/02 - Golden Elks stunned

If Elkton wondered how difficult it can be to beat the same team three times in a season, it received a resounding answer on Monday. Ultimately, though, the top-seeded Golden Elks were left with more questions than anything else after a stunning 49-35 girls’ basketball loss to Susquehanna Division-rival Edgewood in the 2A East Region quarterfinals. “We talked about it pre-game,” Elkton coach Lisa Delcollo said. “I said that this team always comes out and they give us a run for our money, so let’s not make it as interesting this time. What are you going to do? It was interesting all the way through. Just a disappointing end.” The Golden Elks completed a perfect 14-0 lower-division campaign, which included a 45-39 win at Edgewood on Jan. 26 and a 51-43 home triumph on Feb. 19. All that effort and hard work led to the No. 1 seed in the District VII Sectional and a first-round bye. But in one quarter, it all went for naught. The two squads entered the final frame deadlocked at 26. The Rams (12-8) nearly matched their point total for the previous 24 minutes of the contest, outscoring the opposition 23-9 behind 11 points from sophomore guard LaKiah Huff and eight from junior forward Kebrina Johnson. Nine of Huff’s points came on foul shots, with the team recording 12 total in the last stanza. “What we told our girls at the beginning of the quarter was, ‘This is it. We need eight strong minutes and good quality basketball,’” Edgewood coach Amber Croshaw said. “We wanted to stay tough on defense because we knew that if they got lit up on the 3-point line that they could burn us with it. So we told the girls that they needed to play in-their-face man-to-man, deny them all shots, deny them the ball and play smart and take care of the ball, and that’s what they did.” The fourth-quarter meltdown wasn’t Elkton’s only downfall. The team failed to get started early in each of the opening three frames. In the first quarter, it didn’t register a field goal until three minutes, 28 seconds remained. It took nearly four minutes in the second frame and 2:37 into the third. “We don’t come out on fire,” Delcollo said. “It’s tough to get stuff going. We definitely struggled. I mean, I don’t know what it was. It’s just tough to get going.” The Elks also failed to solve Huff (23 points) and Johnson (20), who combined for 43 points. Johnson continually powered into the paint, converting on layup attempt after layup attempt. Senior guard Erica McQuaide led Elkton with 15 points, followed by Lindsey White with six points. Macy McCollum added eight rebounds, five points, three steals and three blocks, Bria Travis brought down five boards and Kerri Valladares registered two assists and two blocks. -- cecilwhig.com

03/01 - Bel Air 45, North East 35

Madison Story recorded 13 points, 18 rebounds, three steals, three blocks and two assists for the Indians (11-1), while Lexi Stevens finished with 12 points, five rebounds and two steals and Meghan Fersch added 14 rebounds, five points and two steals. Also contributing for North East were Christie Minor with five assists and three points and Rachel Clewer with six rebounds. Kim Harrell netted 12 points and Brooke Lorber followed with 11 for the Bobcats (7-14), who led 23-18 at halftime and snapped a 13-game losing streak. -- cecilwhig.com

03/01 - Edgewood 32, Rising Sun 25

Emily Cox scored seven points and Alyssa Henry brought down seven rebounds to pace the Tigers (3-17). Sara McDermott added five points, and Jordin Newby contributed five rebounds and four points. Kebrina Johnson led all scorers for the Rams (11-8) with 19 points, followed by LaKiah Huff with nine. -- cecilwhig.com

02/27 - Parkside starts 'new season' with a bang

With the start of the playoffs Friday, Parkside girls basketball coach Warren White reminded his team it was a "whole new season" and everything that happened before no longer mattered. The Rams, led by point guard Teja Sykes' 23 points, heeded their coach's words, cruising against a hapless Easton 62-18 in the opening round of the MPSSAA 2A East region playoffs. "We told our team the other day, everybody's playing 0-0, and in order to continue playing they had to win," White said. "Their performance showed us wanted to play another game." Parkside (12-9) took control of the game early, racing out to the early lead and stifling Easton's offense. The Warriors took some good shots, but the baskets wouldn't fall. Parkside scored only 15 points in the first quarter, but held Easton (3-13) scoreless over the first eight minutes. It would continue to get worse for the Warriors, as they were held scoreless into the third quarter while the Rams expanded their lead to 35-0. Easton's Ciera Ricker snapped the dry spell with a basket at 5:58 in third quarter. She finished with six points on the night. Sykes scored two points in the third quarter, but exploded for 11 points in the final frame. The shooting guard was put in a precarious situation, as she had to play out of position while regular the point guard, Jasmine Washington, was out sick. "Since we lost (guard) Ashaneyia Hyland to an injury, Teja has found herself in a new role," White said. "It hasn't been easy for her, but she has responded tremendously." Parkside will face Kent Island on Monday in the second round. -- delmarvanow.com

02/26 - Elkton feels right at home

The 2009-10 regular-season campaign marked one of dramatic success for the Elkton girls’ basketball team. For the first time, it played in the UCBAC Championship game after completing a perfect 14-0 Susquehanna Division schedule. The Golden Elks entered that contest having won 12 of their previous 13 contests and will now take their 17-6 record into the 2A East Region’s six-team District VII Sectional with home-court advantage as the top seed. “Who wouldn’t want to play at home?” Elkton coach Lisa Delcollo rhetorically asked. “You got your fans, and that just adds a whole other level to the game, and when you go in, you know pretty much everyone there is cheering you on. The girls love it. I love it. We get to practice there, so we know the ins and outs.” But the Elks will find the road to postseason success comes with challenges from the onset. After enjoying a first-round bye, they start Monday, hosting the winner of tonight’s meeting between Edgewood (10-8) and Rising Sun (3-16). The Rams defeated the Tigers twice this season by a combined 51 points and would have a lot to play for against Elkton. As Edgewood searched for an unprecedented fourth lower-division championship, the Elks turned the team back twice in a pair of intense, tightly contested meetings: 45-39 on Jan. 26 and 51-43 on Feb. 19. “I tell them the same thing I’ve been telling them all season: One game at a time, take each opponent as they come to us,” Delcollo said. “They’ll be a tough match if we play them again, and in the back of my mind is the whole three times in a season, can we do it? But I have confidence in my girls.” Fallston (15-4), which won the 2009 3A State Championship, garnered the two seed and awaits the winner of tonight’s first-round contest featuring North East (11-10) at Bel Air (6-14). The two squads headed in completely different directions as the season carried on, with the young Indians winning eight of their final 11 games after beginning 3-7 and the Bobcats losing 13 in a row following a red-hot 6-1 start. The teams did not meet in the regular season. “I really don’t know much about Bel Air,” North East coach Alan Foskey said. “We haven’t played them in two years, although we’ve had success in the past. I know they have a lot of speed, but I don’t know what else to expect. They definitely have the advantage playing at their home place.” Ultimately, the sectional, region and possibly all of Class 2A go through the Cougars, who are back to full strength with the recent return from injury of forward Jess Harlee. The senior will play at NCAA Division I West Virginia University next winter. Prior to this season, Fallston captured five consecutive UCBAC Championships and also advanced to the 3A State Tournament in 2007, when it fell in the semifinals by one point. “They’re a fantastic team,” said Delcollo, whose squad lost on the road to a Harlee-less Cougars group 50-43 on Jan. 11. “They’ve definitely proved that.” -- cecilwhig.com

02/25 - UCBAC Girls’ Basketball Power Poll

6. Elkton (17-6, 6) – The Golden Elks earned the top seed and home-court advantage in the 2A East Region’s District VII Sectional. The reward for the Susquehanna Division Champions? Attempting to upend Edgewood for the third time this season in the quarterfinals. If they do, the Elks will host a semifinal date with 2009 3A State Champion Fallston.

10. North East (11-10, 11) – The youthful Indians are winners of eight of their past 11 games. However, if they manage to squeak past Bel Air, it’s game over against Fallston.

14. Rising Sun (3-16, 14) – The inexperienced Tigers ended the regular season with the fewest wins in the conference. -- cecilwhig.com

02/25 - Warriors keep record spotless

The Mardela girls basketball team capped off its perfect run in conference play with a Bayside championship Wednesday, beating North Caroline 57-40 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. The first half saw both squads make runs, but in the second half it was all Warriors, as Mardela's Taylor Siggers scored 15 of her game-high 19 points in the final 16 minutes of play. "We had to come out stronger in the second half, because the first half was a mess," Siggers said. "We just had to regroup, Coach had to talk to us, and we just had to go out there and play Mardela basketball." After a fast start that saw Mardela (23-2, 20-0 Bayside) jump out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter, North Caroline (15-4, 14-2) closed out the frame on a 10-0 run to grab the lead. In the second quarter, Mardela would reestablish its lead, as Chris Lomax converted a three-point play to give the Warriors a 17-12 advantage. But just like in the first quarter, the Bulldogs countered, cutting the Warriors' lead to 23-21 when Deja Acree knocked down a 3-pointer to end the half. The Warriors were not playing their best basketball, as the Bulldogs collected offensive rebounds and cashed them in for second-chance points. That would change in the second half, with Mardela coming out with a different rebounding approach, hustling on the defensive boards to limit North Caroline's scoring opportunities. “We knew that we needed to control (the boards) in order to beat North Caroline," Mardela coach Kesha Cook said. "We did a wonderful job in the second half. They really came out and focused on rebounding, giving them one shot and one shot only." Mardela's increased rebounding effort helped to get the team's offense, which seemed out of sync at times during the first half, back on track. The Warriors were able to get out on the fast break and convert on the open shots that presented themselves. Siggers seemed to be the biggest difference-maker in the second half, scoring nine third-quarter points to help her team outscore North Caroline 18-8 in the frame. While the Bulldogs were able to answer the Warriors' runs in the first half, they failed to answer in the second, and Mardela pulled away for the victory. "(In the second half), we controlled the tempo of the game," Cook said. "By, first off, us not turning the ball over and, second, containing them on defense. First half we sort of overplayed some things. They got some easy buckets. But once we settled down on defense, contained and played good help defense, it really helped us." -- delmarvanow.com

Kerri Valladares (5.2 ppg, 3.6 apg, 1.8 spg)

What Joppatowne needs to do to win: Like Elkton, the Mariners will be playing in their third game in as many days. Especially after Tuesday’s draining shootout with Aberdeen, Joppatowne must recollect itself and avoid a letdown. If the team starts out flat, it needs to quickly gather itself. “Elkton’s a good team,” coach Mike Harris said. “Ultimately, we’ve had two really tough games in a row, so we have to get ourselves up emotionally and stay fundamentally sound. I’m just worried about us being tired and flat.”

What Elkton needs to do to win: If the Mariners experience an unfocused start, the Golden Elks must pounce and receive crisp, accurate shooting. Communication, an area coach Lisa Delcollo believes her team has improved upon as the season’s wore on, will also prove to be pivotal. “They definitely have some speed, and they’re good outside shooters,” Delcollo said, “so we want to address those issues and work better on our switching and communication if we’re playing man-to-man.”

What to expect: Joppatowne to claim its first UCBAC Championship in its second title game appearance. During the season, Elkton played each of the Chesapeake Division’s top three teams, so there won’t be much that will surprise Delcollo’s bunch. However, the Mariners, who scored a 59-41 home victory on Dec. 17, boast too many weapons. The scoring gap should be a little bit closer in this one but still double digits. -- cecilwhig.com

02/24 - Elks cap perfect division campaign

The Elkton girls’ basketball team entered Tuesday’s road contest against Rising Sun needing a victory for the school’s first undefeated season in the Susquehanna Division. With the lower-division title already in-hand and the playoffs looming ahead, it would have been easy for the Golden Elks to have a letdown game, but from the opening tip, it was evident that the girls intended to keep their division record unblemished, winning 50-26. “We came into the season as the favorites to win the division, but Coach D (Lisa Delcollo) always told us, ‘Every team has their night,’ ” senior Erica McQuaide said. “We played really well and had good passing (throughout the campaign). We sort of fell apart a little bit in the middle of the season, but we all pulled together and it feels great to win it our senior year.” McQuaide led the charge for Elkton with 14 points and two assists, while Bria Travis scored eight points and dished out four assists and center Macy McCollum contributed six rebounds and three blocks in limited action. The Elks (17-5 overall, 14-0 division) shot 22-for-58 (37.9 percent) from the field, including 3-for-12 (25 percent) from 3-point range. Elkton, which forced 17 turnovers, also held a 41-31 rebounding advantage. “It is awesome,” Delcollo said. “Winning the division was a goal we set for ourselves. We worked hard for it and we accomplished it, so I’m happy for all the girls.” The contest was never in doubt after the first frame, as Elkton enjoyed a double-digit lead for the remaining three quarters. Coming off a game Monday (a 50-37 win over Bohemia Manor), Delcollo utilized her reserves, who made the most of their opportunities. Desiree Foye pulled down a team-high eight rebounds to go with seven points, Tyffany Hicks finished with six points and five rebounds, Lindsey White grabbed seven rebounds and Renee Dunn led the squad with four steals. “Anytime I can get everybody off the bench I try to do that,” Delcollo said. “There have been a couple of games this season where I could get everybody playing time, and I like to do that.” The Tigers (3-16 overall, 2-11 division) were led by Ashley Copes (six points, four rebounds), Kelly Steen (five points, two steals, two assists), Emily Cox (four points) and Jordin Newby (eight rebounds, four points). The Elks earned the top seed and a first-round bye in the 2A East Region’s District VII Sectional. They will face the winner of Friday’s Rising Sun-Edgewood match-up. -- cecilwhig.com

02/24 - BAYSIDE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES TO BE HELD AT CIVIC CENTER

The boys and girls Bayside Championship games will be held at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Wednesday. The girls game, which features Mardela vs. North Caroline, will begin at 6 p.m., while the boys, which will feature Snow Hill and North Caroline, is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. Admission is $5. -- delmarvanow.com

02/24 - Mardela, North Caroline girls vie for conference title

Last week the top girls team in the Bayside South division, Mardela, played the top team in the Bayside North, North Caroline. Tonight, those same two teams will meet again. However, instead of just being a thrilling regular season game, it should be a tight matchup during the girls 6 p.m. Bayside Championship game at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. North Caroline (15-3, 14-1 Bayside) came the closest of any team this season to putting a blemish on Mardela's (22-2, 19-0 Bayside) spotless conference record. Five days after losing 53-48, the Bulldogs are licking their chops to get another chance at the Warriors. "I think (my team) believes that they have just as much chance of winning as Mardela does," said North Caroline head coach Mark Potter. "Mardela is well-coached and it's going to be a good physical defensive basketball game." Mardela head coach Kesha Cook is also stressing the importance of defense. And after playing North Caroline just last week, the lessons learned from that contest should be fresh in the minds of the Mardela players. "We got to know the things that they do well (Friday)," said Cook. "We have to get good solid rebounding on both ends of the floor. We have to play good team defense and execute on offense." Both teams are coming off wins Tuesday, and today's championship game will be the finish line for the marathon sprint the squads completed to wrap up the regular season after snow canceled almost two full weeks of school. "Both teams have played a lot of basketball since Friday," said Potter. "(Both teams') legs are going to be tired, but these girls are going to playing on emotion." -- delmarvanow.com

02/24 - Mardela undefeated in conference

The Mardela girls basketball team will finish Bayside South play undefeated as they defeated James M. Bennett 68-52 on Tuesday. Mardela will next play in the Bayside Championship on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center against North Caroline. The Warriors were led by Jasmine Jones, who netted a game-high 22 points. Taylor Siggers chipped in with 15 points for Mardela. For Bennett, Corlee Jackson led the Clippers with 18 points, and Raquel Weeks netted 17 points in the losing effort. -- delmarvanow.com

02/23 - Elkton one win away from perfect division campaign

Elkton never trailed in a 50-37 girls’ basketball victory over host Bohemia Manor on Monday. The Golden Elks (16-5 overall, 13-0 Susquehanna) used an efficient attack, making 49 percent of their shots from the field. “It is definitely important to shoot well offensively because it keeps everyone positive,” Elkton’s Emily Dunn said. “When (Bo Manor) played man, we definitely went with the pick-and-roll because we wanted to get someone open near the basket, and that’s what happened.” Dunn scored 10 points to join teammates Lindsey White (10) and Desiree Foye (11) in double digits. “We practice a lot on our shooting because we still have to make the shots when get open,” Foye said. “So, we spend a lot time working together on offense, and we make sure our offense is running right.” The Elks made 8-of-12 first-quarter attempts to grab a 17-9 lead. Defensively, Elkton was just as efficient, limiting Bo Manor to 27 percent shooting from the floor and forcing 23 turnovers. “We were switching up really well tonight,” Elks coach Lisa Delcollo said. “When we went for the steal, someone else was covering their man. We were able to stop them whether we played the man or zone. It was good communication on our part on defense.” The win kicked off a week where Elkton plays three games in as many days, concluding with the UCBAC Championship on Wednesday. “This is a good win for us,” Foye said. “Everyone’s playing to their potential, and we didn’t have a let down. It’s going to help our confidence because we know we can beat anybody.” Lauren Price led the Eagles with 12 points, while Brynae Goodley added seven and Jess Lloyd (four steals) and Becky Curtis netted five points each. Elkton travels to Rising Sun at 7 tonight in its regular-season finale. -- cecilwhig.com

02/23 - North East 58, Havre de Grace 47

The Indians (11-10 overall, 9-5 Susquehanna) were led by Meghan Fersch with 20 points, six rebounds and three steals, Lexi Stevens with 14 points, five boards and two steals and Madison Story with 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Christie Minor also scored 10 points, while Rachel Clewer dished out nine assists to go along with three steals and Ashley McKinney contributed four rebounds and three steals. For the Warriors (4-15, 3-10), Katie Fisher scored 16 points, followed by Candace Knight and Katie Bubb with nine apiece and Olivia Casey with eight. 02/23 - Pocomoke gets win over Bennett

Pocomoke defeated James M. Bennett 61-50 on Monday in a game far closer than the final score suggested. Pocomoke (15-6, 9-6 Bayside) looked absolutely dominant early, opening the game with an 11-0 run with very physical play. Bennett (16-5, 13-3) closed the gap to 20-10 to end the first quarter and then went on a 9-0 run to start the second. "Our team came back three times. They closed it in the second quarter," said Clippers coach Darren Rogers. "They did a phenomenal job, and they've got a lot of heart." But the Warriors went on another 11-0 run to finish the half and go up 34-21. Kiana Sturgis was dominant for Pocomoke, leading all scorers with 22 points. Whitney King also added 14 for the Warriors. Bennett narrowed the gap to five points in the third quarter and eventually tied the game with just three minutes to play. The home crowd became electric, stomping and shouting themselves hoarse, only to see their team unravel in the waning seconds. "In the last two minutes we scored 11 points," Pocomoke coach Gail Gladding said. "I thought that we all played well ... without everybody that was out there, I don't think we would have had the win. Everybody stepped up and did something special for us." Raquel Weeks came off an injury to score 13 points for the Clippers, and Grace Lipinski also earned 13 and a black eye in furious play for the home squad. Yannie Davis also scored 12 for Bennett. "When she's on, she's on," coach Rogers said of Lipinski. Pocomoke faces Parkside at home today and Bennett will face off against Mardela in the final game of the season before starting the state playoffs next week. -- delmarvanow.com

02/22 - Tigers struggle with shot, fall to Warriors

Rising Sun’s offense never got on track during a 48-34 girls’ basketball loss to Havre de Grace on Friday. Kelly Steen powered the Tigers (3-15 overall, 2-10 Susquehanna) with eight points, while Alyssa Henry added six points, Ashley Copes netted four points and Lina Lack scored two points. As a team, Rising Sun shot less than 20 percent from the floor. “Our shot percentage was down tonight,” Rising Sun coach David Henry said. “We missed too many shots.” However, the Tigers kept the game close with a stifling defense until Warriors guard Katie Fisher (12 points) sparked her team off the bench. “We were hungry for a win tonight,” said Fisher, who lifted Havre de Grace to an 18-11 advantage at halftime. Cristina Hawkins led the way for the Warriors (4-14, 3-9) with 17 points, while Candace Knight added 13 points, Katie Bubb contributed four points and Olivia Casey chipped in with two points. Rising Sun pulled as close as five points in the fourth quarter, but it was unable to close the gap completely. The Tigers complete their regular season against Elkton on Monday. “The goal is to work on our fundamentals and finish the season strong and prepare for the playoffs,” David Henry said. -- cecilwhig.com

02/22 - Elks clinch division title

Senior Macy McCollum recorded 22 rebounds and 21 points as Elkton clinched its first Susquehanna Division girls’ basketball title by defeating visiting Edgewood 51-43 on Friday. “(Winning the division) means a lot,” McCollum said. “We have been rebuilding the team, and it’s really nice to peak in your senior year. We had six seniors this season, which is more than we have had the past three years, and to go undefeated (in the division) is astronomical.” McCollum, who shot 9-for-14 from the field, was a force in the paint. She hauled in eight offensive rebounds and scored 11 of the Golden Elks’ 19 second-chance points. “We were introducing our seniors (for Senior Night). When I hugged Macy, I whispered in her ear, ‘Kick butt tonight,’ and she did,” Elkton coach Lisa Delcollo said. “She did everything and more.” Each of Elkton’s six seniors contributed in the victory, led by starters McCollum, Erica McQuaide (nine points, two steals, two assists) and Emily Dunn (four rebounds, two points). Tyffany Hicks (six rebounds, five points), Symone Stewart (two rebounds) and Chelsea Moher (one rebound) all chipped in off the bench. “(The division title) means everything,” Delcollo said. “We knew we had a good squad at the beginning of the season, and I was just excited to see what was going to happen throughout the entire season. I am so happy for all of my seniors and everyone else on this team that put in the work these past couple months. Their sweat has paid off.” The Rams (9-7 overall, 8-3 division) held a 19-17 advantage at the break after a back-and-forth first half that featured eight lead changes and seven ties. Neither team led by more than two points in the first two frames. “When we went into the locker room (at halftime) I said, ‘The third quarter usually kills us. Let’s make this our best third quarter,’ and I think we did that,” Delcollo said. “(The seniors) were so excited for this game. They came out and they wanted to just dominate. It had a slow take off, but to catch them and get the win - it’s indescribable.” The Elks (15-5, 12-0), who held a 47-30 rebounding advantage and forced Edgewood into 15 turnovers, utilized an 8-2 run after halftime to retake the lead for good. “In the second half we were watching the baseline because that is how they were getting their shots,” McCollum said. “We tried to limit them to the outside shots because they were having trouble putting them in, and we had to stop (LaKiah Huff) from driving.” Huff (13 points, eight rebounds, four assists) and Kebrina Johnson (13 points, eight rebounds, five steals) paced Edgewood, which finished 3-for-17 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc. -- cecilwhig.com

02/22 - Harford Tech 60, North East 39

Lexi Stevens scored a game-high 20 points and brought down five rebounds for the Indians (10-10 overall, 8-5 Susquehanna). Meghan Fersch added seven points, seven rebounds and two blocks, followed by Madison Story with six points and four boards. Christie Minor recorded a pair of steals. Alanah Galloway recorded 19 points and five rebounds and Brittney Chavis added a 12-rebound, 10-point double-double for the Cobras (10-7, 9-3), who led 26-17 at halftime. 02/19 - Indians finding their groove

Last season, the North East girls’ basketball team captured its second Susquehanna Division Championship and finished the year with 15 victories. The Indians graduated all five starters from that unit, including two-time All-County Player of the Year Candice Fritz. The turnover left the team desperately struggling for an identity early this winter, as it stumbled to just three wins in its first 10 games. However, with Thursday’s 50-23 Susquehanna Division triumph over visiting Bohemia Manor, North East has now emerged victorious in seven of its last nine to move above .500 for the first time. As the old adage goes, better late than never. “We started out the season with not a lot of experience, but the more games we play, we just start clicking better together,” point guard Christie Minor said. “I don’t know. We’ve just been playing better and better each game, so it’s good going into playoffs.” The Indians (10-9 overall, 8-4 division) looked sluggish to start the contest, turning the ball over on their first two possessions, both times leading to points for the Eagles (4-12, 1-10). However, the hosts quickly righted themselves, rolling to a 20-4 run that stretched from early in the opening quarter to just over two-and-a-half minutes into the second. Freshman Lexi Stevens (three steals) netted 10 of her 13 points during the outburst, with Madison Story (two assists, two steals) garnering eight of her 11. Story added 11 rebounds for a double-double, but the evening belonged to Minor, honored along with Lauren Dorris (two points) on Senior Night. Minor, who saw significant time on last year’s unit, finished with a game-high 14 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the second half, to go along with three rebounds, three steals and two assists. “Basketball is my favorite sport, so it definitely meant a lot to me with Senior Night and everything,” she said. “It’s all coming to an end, so it’s nice to go out with a good game.” Rachel Clewer added five rebounds, four points, three assists and two steals for North East, and Meghan Fersch contributed five steals, four rebounds and four points. Heather Hancharick led Bo Manor with six points and three steals, while Asia Lawrence (five rebounds, three steals), Courtney Crockett, Becky Curtis and Lauren Price all followed with four points apiece. -- cecilwhig.com

02/18 - JAMES 'W' BENNETT

On a rainy Presidents Day, while the rest of their classmates were enjoying a final day off after a long weather layoff, the James M. Bennett girls basketball team was inside the gym, working. "Don't be scared," one player called to another while the others laughed and cheered their teammates on. "Don't be timid." Lay-up drills at the tail end of the season could be monotonous, but for the Clippers, being on a successful team makes things easier. After finishing with just 10 victories last year, Bennett ran off eight straight victories to start this season and now owns a 15-4 mark (12-2 in the Bayside Conference) going into today's game against Cambridge-South Dorchester. Key games against Pocomoke and Mardela loom next week as the Clippers jockey for position in the state playoffs. The difference this year from last? Focus, Corlee Jackson said. "There's a lot more commitment, a lot more energy from everybody," the senior forward said. "Since there's like five seniors, this is everyone's last year, so we want to make it the best. Everyone's put in a whole bunch of effort and time into this." Last year, things were different, coach Darren Rogers said. Starting three sophomores, a junior and freshman, Rogers said the team struggled to find its way. But now the team has almost an entire year of playing together -- including summer leagues -- and there's a lot of Clipper chemistry. "You could kind of tell some games (last year) we just weren't on," he said. "But this year, a lot girls stepped up. This year, they've kind of grown up and they don't put up with other girls slacking. When I get on them, (the veterans) get on them, too, and it really goes throughout the team." That extra commitment also helped them through a spate of injuries this year, including ones to point guards Raquel Weeks, Yannie Davis and Grace Lipinski. "We've pulled together very well through the injuries," senior Alexis Eyo said. "We've had to put people in different positions, but we've managed to do it pretty well. I think everyone's been injured at least one point or the other." In fact, most of the players have taken it as a personal challenge to pick up the slack from teammates who are out of action, Lipinski said. "All the injuries have made us work harder to prove ourselves and show that overall we're a good team that doesn't just rely on one person," she said. Rogers agreed. "The depth of my team -- I've had girls step up, big time," he said. "When you have an injury you kind of panic, and then you worry, but now when these players come off of injury, I'm not worried because I have players that have played big-time minutes." Of course, two of the team's final tests come next week when they play Pocomoke and Mardela, the Bayside South's traditional powerhouses. Eyo and her teammates are confident in their chances against both teams, but also looking at the bigger picture. "I want to take it further than that," she said. "We haven't won a championship here since the 1960s, so it'd be great at the end of my senior year to put a ''10' on that banner." -- delmarvanow.com

02/17 - Elkton girls survive Ingram double-double

In the first girls’ basketball action since Feb. 4, Elkton defeated Perryville 53-30. Forward Candace Ingram led the way for the Panthers with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Yet, sloppy defense and miscommunication on offense led to a tough night for the visitors. “We didn’t play as a team tonight,” said Ingram, whose team scored six points in the second frame. “We didn’t get any offensive rebounds.” After claiming a 14-10 first-quarter advantage, the Golden Elks (13-5 overall, 10-0 Susquehanna) turned up the pressure in the second. Elkton made up for a lack of interior scoring by making numerous attempts beyond the arc. “We always felt that outside shooting was a strength,” said Golden Elks coach Lisa Delcollo, whose squad led 34-16 at the half. Desiree Foye recorded nine points for the Golden Elks, while Kerri Valladares scored eight points and Lindsey White added four steals and five offensive rebounds. “We were a little off tonight,” Panthers coach Dani Leroux said. “After the time off, we were tired and unconditioned.” Yannick Gray finished with seven points and five rebounds for Perryville (7-8 , 4-7), while Whitney Hyson added four points and Jyl Packer brought down five rebounds. 02/17 - Wicomico girls claim sloppy game

The Wicomico girls basketball team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to pull away from visiting James M. Bennett en route to a 51-38 victory on Tuesday night. "This was a big win for us, especially after an overtime loss [to Pocomoke on Monday]," Wicomico coach Willie Downing said. "We showed a lot of pride here on senior night. It's a big thing for our girls to win their last home game." The game got off to a miserable start for both teams, as the opening eight minutes saw the teams combine for eight points and 26 turnovers. About six minutes into the first quarter, Wi-Hi's Zahra Fleming finally opened the game's scoring. The senior, who scored a team-high 14 points, stole the ball near mid-court and coasted toward the basket uncontested for a layup. "I've never seen a 4-4 first quarter in my life," said Downing with a half smile. "I don't know what happened, but I know our girls were trying really hard. I think it was a lot of rushing." In the second quarter, both teams went on scoring runs. Bennett opened the period with seven unanswered points to take a 11-4 lead and push it to 15-6 with just a little more than three minutes remaining in the half. But after that point, it ground to a halt for the Clippers (15-4, 12-2 Bayside), as the Indians (13-6, 11-4 Bayside) charged back on the strength of a 14-3 run to claim a 20-18 lead at the half. The Indians held on to their tenuous lead through the third quarter, entering the final frame holding a 29-28 advantage. But in the fourth quarter it was all Wi-Hi, as the Indians outscored the Clippers 22-10 in the frame. Senior Ariel Duffy led the way, tallying 10 points in the period. "I think it was a physical game on both sides," Downing said. "We just withstood it more, stayed focused and didn't worry about what was being called and what wasn't being called. I think we came out better because of that." -- delmarvanow.com

Girls’ Basketball:  Kelly Steen, Rising Sun

The forward finished tied with a team-high seven points to go along with six rebounds in Tuesday’s 33-28 victory over Bohemia Manor, ending the Tigers’ six-game losing streak. Two days later, the senior brought down 10 boards and again netted seven points in a 56-33 loss to Edgewood. “She was able to turn up her aggressiveness, both on defense by forcing a lot of steals and offensively by scoring and rebounding,” Rising Sun coach David Henry said. -- cecilwhig.com

02/09 - Girls' Basketball Notebook

-- The Susquehanna Division also appears to be a two-team race at this point, with Elkton (9-0) holding a slim one-game lead over Edgewood thanks to a 45-39 win on Jan. 26. The Rams are looking for their fourth lower-division crown, after previously winning in 2004, ’06 and ’08. The Golden Elks have never played in the UCBAC Championship game, with North East (’07 and ’09) the lone Cecil County program to do so. Elkton hosts Edgewood in the rematch on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., and the two teams could also meet in the 2A East Region’s North Sectional playoff bracket.

-- The recent winter storms have undoubtedly disturbed the entire conference, as exemplified by No. 3 Fallston seeing three consecutive games postponed from Friday through today, and Elkton being forced to rescheduled its Susquehanna Division contest with Havre de Grace twice in the past week. “I think the postponements obviously affect our conditioning,” Golden Elks coach Lisa Delcollo said. “As far as not being in live game action for awhile, I think we’re far enough along in the season that it’s not going to be too much of a problem, but just losing all the days we have with conditioning is what I’m mainly worried about.”

02/04 - UCBAC Girls’ Basketball Power Poll

6. Elkton (11-5, 6) – The Golden Elks had their season-high six-game winning streak snapped at home by Delaware’s St. Georges Tech on Friday.

11. North East (8-8, 11) – The red-hot Indians have won five of their last six to move to .500 for the first time this season. They still need to avenge last month’s 23-point defeat to Harford Tech to move up in the poll.

14. Rising Sun (3-12, 15) – The Tigers finally snapped their losing streak at six games on Tuesday and, in the process, ensured their stay in the basement was short lived. -- cecilwhig.com

02/03 - North East gets ‘Story’book ending

The clock showed exactly one minute remaining in regulation when North East center Madison Story followed coach Alan Foskey’s instructions and scored on a put back for two of her six fourth-quarter points. “Coach said that me and Meghan (Fersch) had to dig deep down in our hearts and find it and win the game,” Story explained. “So we just did all we could, caught every ball and put it back up as best we could.” The basket put the Indians ahead by two before host Perryville cut the deficit in half on a foul shot with 15.4 seconds to go. After a timeout, Story was sent to the line but missed both opportunities to give the Panthers one final possession with the game on the line. They couldn’t convert, and North East escaped with a 36-35 road win on Tuesday in Susquehanna Division girls’ basketball action. “The crowd was so hectic, and I let it get in my head,” Story said of the difficult trip to the line. “But the team just pulled together, and we made sure that they didn’t get their shot. It was a good feeling.” Story, who finished with 17 rebounds, 12 points, three blocks and two assists, otherwise excelled in a wild final frame that the Indians (8-8 overall, 6-3 division) entered with a five-point lead. Perryville (6-7, 3-6), however, rattled off an 8-0 run before Story scored North East’s first points of the quarter with 3:07 to go, closing the gap to 32-31. “Our heads weren’t in it,” Story said, “and we were just doing all we could to get back and win the game.” A Candace Ingram field goal again left the visitors trailing by three points, but the Indians used three straight foul shots to tie the score and set up the dramatic finish. Ingram finished with 20 rebounds but just eight points, four in each half, to leave her shy of a double-double for the first time this season. “We knew coming in that she was a big threat for their team,” Story said. “We just knew we had to front ’em and just pinch in in the paint so that she couldn’t get the ball and she had to shoot outside.” Yannick Gray led the Panthers in scoring with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds, while Whitney Hynson tallied six points. For North East, Christie Minor recorded eight points, five assists and three steals, and Fersch brought down 13 rebounds and added four points, two steals and one block. -- cecilwhig.com

For the Eagles (4-10, 1-8), Heather Hancharick recorded 11 points, six steals and four rebounds, while Asia Lawrence finished with 12 rebounds, four blocks and four points and Jess Lloyd tallied five steals, four points, three assists and three rebounds. Two days later, she contributed nine rebounds, eight points, three steals and three blocks in a 54-35 win over visiting Rising Sun. “She’s been working every day with assistant coach Gary Brown on finishing layups and finishing inside,” North East coach Alan Foskey said. “It’s really starting to pay dividends. Her free-throw shooting has improved, as well.” -- cecilwhig.com

02/01 - Games of the Week

Girls’ Basketball:  Bohemia Manor at Rising Sun

When: 7 p.m. Tuesday

What Bo Manor needs to do to win: Jump ahead early and display wise shot selection. Although sparingly, the Eagles have demonstrated the poise to open the first quarter strong and carry that momentum throughout the remainder of the game. That’s a must in this one if Bo Manor wants to take a step up from the basement.

What Rising Sun needs to do to win: Stay focused mentally and not let the overall struggles of the season be a burden. This is a battle the Tigers can certainly win, but they need to take smart first shots in their end and not let the Eagles get too many second-chance opportunities on the opposite side of the floor.

What to expect: Rising Sun’s last win occurred Jan. 7 over Bo Manor by a 14-point margin. The Tigers will end their six-game skid and complete the series sweep in the process in a contest that’s closer than the first meeting. -- cecilwhig.com

Alanah Galloway, Brittaney Chavis, Maria Kalanbhis scored 18, 10 and nine points, respectively, to pace the Cobras (6-7, 5-3), who trailed 37-18 at the half. -- cecilwhig.com

01/29 - North East sweeps Rising Sun

The first time county rivals North East and Rising Sun met in girls’ basketball action this season, the defending Susquehanna Division champion Indians emerged with a tight five-point victory. Thursday’s rematch started close but certainly didn’t finish that way. Forward Meghan Fersch scored a game-high 22 points to lift North East to a dominant 54-35 win over the Tigers and a sweep of the season series. “I just knew that I was going against a strong team and that I had to bust my butt and get my shots down, because before games, I’ve just been throwing up shots and they haven’t been coming in,” said Fersch, who added 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. “I just knew that if I practiced my shots that they’d go in and I’d succeed at it.” The Indians (7-8 overall, 5-3 division) began slow, holding just a 6-4 advantage after the opening frame. However, Fersch put up 10 consecutive points for her team in its 18-point second quarter. The junior drove to the basket for layups, hit routine jump shots and provided exactly the spark that the lethargic North East squad needed. “In practice, we did a lot of shooting drills. Shooting, shooting, shooting,” Fersch said. “And if we didn’t make it, we’d run laps and beat ourselves up until we made that shot, 20 in a row. We definitely disciplined ourselves in practice to get all our shots and offensive rebounds and everything.” As a result, the Indians recorded their highest point total of the season and have now won four of their last five games. The news isn’t so good for Rising Sun (2-12, 1-7), which rides a season-high six-game losing streak. Kelly Steen led the Tigers with seven points and four steals, while Heather Lesniowski (four steals), Sara McDermott (three rebounds) and Emily Cox all followed with six points and Jordin Newby tallied four points. For North East, Madison Story contributed nine rebounds, eight points, three steals and three blocks, Lexi Stevens added seven points and two steals and Katie Spence garnered four points, three assists and two steals. The team also received another strong performance from point guard Christie Minor, one of only two seniors on the roster. She hit three times from long range in the second half and finished with 11 points to go along with five assists, four rebounds and four steals. “Christie definitely brings leadership,” Fersch said. “She’s a hard worker. She’s a senior leader. She definitely runs our team with her dribbling and her shooting. Just when we need it, it comes in handy.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/29 - Bennett girls roll over Snow Hill, 70-28

The James M. Bennett girls basketball team had four players record double-digit point totals in a 70-28 road victory Thursday over Snow Hill on Thursday. After the Eagles' Sabrina Waters cut the Clippers' lead to 12-8 with a fast break lay-up to open the second quarter, Bennett (13-3, 10-1 Bayside) went on a 8-0 run and never looked back. "We did pretty well," said Bennett head coach Darren Rogers. "In the third and fourth quarter we came out really strong and we finished. The last two games we haven't been finishing, but this game we finished." The Eagles (5-10, 3-10), who came into the game with only seven healthy players, left the contest more battered and bruised. Snow Hill center Jamilla Thompson got hurt in the first quarter, twisting her ankle, and the team's leading scorer Sabrina Waters did not play in the fourth quarter due to illness. However, Waters was still able to contribute while she was in the game, scoring a team high 14 points. Waters' contributions, however, were not enough to carry her Eagles squad, as Bennett was able to create too many turnovers and score several uncontested baskets. Senior Corlee Jackson paced the Clipper attack with a game high 17 points. Grace Lipinski scored 14 points for Bennett, while teammates Yonnie Davis (13) and Alexis Eyo (10) also reached the double-digit point mark. "We've had a lot of girls step up this season," said Rogers. "Raquel Weeks has been out for a while, Grace got hurt for a week, Yonnie got hurt. So I've had girls that had to step up before, and I think they are getting comfortable when they get in the game. Now when they go in, they know what they have to do." -- delmarvanow.com

01/22 - North East lacks finishing touch

After back-to-back field goals by Meghan Fersch and Christie Minor, host North East found itself tied with Susquehanna Division leader Edgewood early in the fourth quarter. The Indians’ offense went silent from that point on, making one field goal the rest of the way, as the visiting Rams earned a 43-33 girls’ basketball victory on Thursday. North East missed its final seven shots, including a couple of point-blank attempts. “We need to work on our free throws and finishing our layups,” Indians guard Lexi Stevens said. “We have struggled with that at times this season, and it just happened in the fourth quarter (Thursday). We have to go to practice and work on that.” North East (5-8 overall, 3-3 Susquehanna) struggled to hold onto the ball in the fourth quarter, committing 10 turnovers as the Rams’ press picked up the intensity. North East also struggled offensively to start the game, spotting Edgewood (6-4 overall, 6-0 division) a 17-4 lead after seven minutes. Kebrina Johnson powered the Rams during the opening surge with 12 points. “I think we needed a little bit more intensity and to finish our layups,” Stevens said. “We had opportunities, and they just did not go in.” Stevens and Ashley McKinney hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut Edgewood’s lead to 17-10 after the first period, and North East carried the momentum into the second and third quarters, tying the game at 22-22 with five minutes, 17 seconds left in the third. “Again, this is a young and inexperienced team,” Indians coach Alan Foskey said. “They were in a little bit of awe of (Edgewood’s) great athletes. Once they found out they could play with them, we began to outplay them for a good part of the game. … We just have to learn how to finish.” Stevens and Fersch led the Indians with eight points each, with Stevens dishing out three assists and grabbing five rebounds. Minor contributed seven points, and Madison Story pulled down a team-high 10 boards. Johnson finished with a game-high 20 points for the Rams, and LaKiah Huff added 16. -- cecilwhig.com

01/17 - Indians win with ‘D’

North East’s defense shut down visiting Perryville for the first 18 minutes of Friday’s UCBAC girls’ basketball tilt. Despite a mid-game slump, the Indians rode their impressive defense to a 42-33 victory. “We tried to pick up our intensity and pressure their point guard a little bit,” North East coach Alan Foskey said of the team’s clinching 13-4 fourth-quarter run. “We changed defenses a few times to, hopefully, try to confuse them. After the third quarter, we had to do something because it was bad. The kids really did pick it up in the fourth.” The Indians (4-7 overall, 2-2 Susquehanna) led 27-12 early in the third quarter when the Panthers (4-3, 2-2) tied the game with a 17-2 spurt. Candace Ingram (21 rebounds) led Perryville through three frames with 15 points. However, she was held to just two in the fourth, as North East forced 12 turnovers in the final seven minutes. “We decided to pack it in a little tighter and make them shoot outside shots,” said Christie Minor, who led the Indians with 15 points. “They were starting to beat us inside by getting rebounds and putting them back in. We wanted them to take shots from the outside, which have a lower percentage of going in.” Minor and Lexi Stevens combined for nine points in the Indians’ closing surge, and it was Stevens who put the game away with a 3-pointer to give North East a 38-32 advantage with 2:25 remaining. “I was trying to settle my mind down on that shot because I was trying to rush my shots earlier in the half,” Stevens said. “I just needed to settle down and take good shots at the end.” In addition her scoring output, Minor recorded four rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Stevens totaled nine points, seven rebounds and three steals. Rachel Clewer added six second-half points for the Indians. Perryville’s Yannick Gray was the only other player in double figures with 11. She also brought down seven rebounds. -- cecilwhig.com

01/17 - Edgewood 57, Rising Sun 29

Alyssa Henry recorded eight points, Kelly Steen (four rebounds) and Heather Lesniowski both scored six points and Sara McDermott netted five points for the Tigers (2-8 overall, 1-3 Susquehanna). Jordin Newby and Alivia Schoff also brought down four rebounds apiece, as Rising Sun trailed 27-17 at halftime. For the Rams (4-4, 4-0), LaKiah Huff netted 25 points, Kebrina Johnson recorded a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds and Mariah Milton added 10 points. -- cecilwhig.com

01/15 - Elkton rolls to win in 2nd half

Heading into halftime, Elkton held a nine-point lead over North East. However, the Golden Elks didn’t look quite like the team that had dominated their first three Susquehanna Division games – at least not yet. They appeared sluggish and, at times, struggled to finish routine scoring opportunities. “The first quarter we were getting used to it,” Elkton sophomore Lindsey White said. “(The Indians) started out a little better than we expected, so we just had to go in there and pick it up.” The visiting Golden Elks finally asserted their dominance in the third quarter, holding North East to a single field goal in the frame to pull away for a 47-29 girls’ basketball victory on Thursday. “During the third quarter, we came off of a good halftime talk from Coach (Lisa) Delcollo,” White said. “She told us to pick it up and just keep the intensity up and be confident, and that’s what we did.” The Indians (3-7 overall, 1-2 division) were outscored 11-2 in the frame and didn’t jump on the scoreboard until Lexi Stevens netted two of her team-high eight points with three minutes, 20 seconds remaining. The futile stretch turned a single-digit deficit into 18, and while North East matched Elkton (7-4, 4-0) with 13 fourth-quarter points, the game fell well out of reach by that time. “We got a little flustered,” Indians coach Alan Foskey said. “We always say that in the second half, the first four minutes will dictate the rest of the game. We came out and committed two straight turnovers. Inexperience, trying to throw over two defenders, which they know they’re not supposed to do. Experienced team vs. inexperienced team, and that’s what you saw. But overall, effort-wise, I have no qualms about it.” White recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead a solid team effort by the Elks, who boasted nine different scorers. Erica McQuaide and Desiree Foye both netted nine points, with McQuaide’s coming on three 3-pointers. Macy McCollum (five rebounds, two steals) and Brittany McDaniel contributed six points apiece, while Kerri Valladares dished out six assists. For North East, Christie Minor hit twice from long range in the fourth quarter, Rachel Clewer tallied five points, four rebounds and two steals, Meghan Fersch brought down six rebounds to go along with four points and three steals and Madison Story added six rebounds, four steals and a pair of assists. -- cecilwhig.com

01/15 - Mardela girls stay perfect

The Mardela girls basketball team has won games by overwhelmingly large margins on its way to an undefeated record. The Warriors continued the trend Thursday night, as Jasmine Jones' 20 points and Taylor Siggers' 16 points led the way to a 65-42 victory over Parkside. "I told our team that these were the types of games where you have to stay focused, we have to execute on offense, and we had to play good defense," Mardela coach Kesha Cook said. Mardela (10-0, 8-0 Bayside) opened on a 12-3 run, with Ravin Sterling scoring five of her eight game points. The Rams (8-3, 5-3) were able to cut into the margin with a 4-0 run to end the first quarter. In the second quarter, Parkside guard Teja Sykes got the hot hand, scoring 10 of her 11 points in the period. Sykes' effort made the game 26-24 Mardela heading into the half. "[At halftime] I told our girls we were right in [the game]," Parkside coach Warren White said. "We just didn't handle the ball well [in the second half]. There were too many turnovers, and Mardela got fast-break points out of it, which is what they do." The third quarter was a sign of things to come, as Jones scored nine points, many of them off of steals. "I was just looking for the pass and penetrating to where I thought they were going to go and I picked it off," Jones said. With Mardela up by only six going into the fourth quarter, Parkside still had a realistic shot until their offense went cold. The Rams were outscored single-handedly by Siggers 8-7, and the Warriors scored 23 points in the final frame. Siggers said her motivation came by way of Parkside "talking trash" to her. "They talked about trying to mess up our record and keep us from being undefeated," Siggers said. "I did not want to lose this game, because it meant a lot to me." -- delmarvanow.com

01/14 - UCBAC Girls’ Basketball Power Poll

6. Elkton (6-4, 7) – The Golden Elks held a two-point lead at halftime over Fallston on Monday. Despite ultimately losing by seven points, they have to be thrilled with playing the Cougars so tough.

11. North East (3-6, 10) – The Indians are in for another tough challenge when they host Elkton tonight.

14. Rising Sun (2-7, 12) – The Tigers snapped a four-game skid with a 14-point win over Bohemia Manor on Thursday. --cecilwhig.com

01/13 - Rams feast on turnovers served fresh by Warriors

The Pocomoke girls basketball team failed to score a field goal in the third quarter Tuesday night against Parkside, and for the third straight game the Warriors left the court without a victory, falling 45-30 to the host Rams. Pocomoke seemed out of sync all night long, turning the ball over on a frequent basis and allowing the Rams easy fast-break opportunities. "Coming into the game we knew it was a big game," Parkside guard Teja Sykes said. "I think we came out a little slow at first, but in the second half we picked it up real well and pulled out the win." The Rams did stumble coming out of the gates, as they were stuck on three points for most of the first quarter. However, by the end of the quarter, Parkside only trailed 10-6. Parkside was more productive in the second quarter, outscoring Pocomoke 12-7 to take an 18-17 advantage into the half. Coming out of the break, the Rams (8-2, 5-2 Bayside) widened their margin by scoring eight straight points to take a 26-17 lead, and the Warriors (8-4 3-4 Bayside) could never recover. Pocomoke was unable to make a dent in the lead due in large part to the fact that the Warriors simply couldn't hang on to the ball. Pocomoke's best player and ball handler, Kiana Sturgis, got in to early foul trouble and had to sit out for long stretches of the third and fourth quarters. Without Sturgis in the contest, the Warriors struggled to break Parkside's full-court press and oftentimes turned the ball over before crossing half court. "If you look at them, Kiana is there biggest ball handler," Pocomoke coach Warren White said. "When she wasn't in there, the other kids were not as good at handling the pressure, and that helped us out quite a bit. They didn't have enough people who could handle the pressure, and strategy-wise that's the way you have to attack them." Sykes led the Rams with a game-high 18 points, and Ashaneyia Hyland added 13. Pocomoke's Kasey Tapman had a team-high 12 points. -- delmarvanow.com

Tabre Woolford led the Indians with 10 points, and Zahra Flemin had 10 points, six rebounds and five steals. Megan O' Donnell led the Seahawks with six points. -- delmarvanow.com

01/13 - JMB can't keep up with Jones

The top spot in the Bayside South was on the line Tuesday night when the Mardela and James M. Bennett girls basketball teams met for the first time this season. And when it was all over, the Warriors, behind Jasmine Jones' 25 points, took sole possession of the division with a 56-40 victory. "She was the leader of this team offensively and defensively," Mardela coach Kesha Cook said. "She put the team on her back and carried us to victory." Both teams started slow, and turnovers were plentiful early on. Mardela (9-0, 8-0 Bayside) went up 3-0 before Bennett (7-3, 7-1) was able to score its first basket 4:18 in. Jones single-handedly outscored Bennett 7-6 in the first quarter. With an 11-6 lead in the second quarter, the Warriors slowly began to pull away, outscoring the Clippers 17-7 to take an 11-point lead before halftime. "In the second quarter, we hit a stretch where we didn't do real well," Bennett coach Darren Rogers said. "(Mardela) hit a couple of buckets, and we got down on ourselves. That stretch really hurt us." Scoring was minimal in the third quarter, as both teams combined for 17 points. In the fourth quarter, both teams found their offense, with Bennett's Yannie Davis scoring 10 of her 14 points. Not to be outdone, Jones scored 11 points off of several steals. "Coach said we needed a leader to step up on the floor, and I just stepped up," Jones said. "I just had my first steal, and it went from there and it just got me pumped." With control of the Bayside South, Cook knows the target on their backs continues to increase and that the will have to continue being attentive. "Every night we've got to come out and play hard," Cook said. "Take no team for granted, work hard and play good defense, and we'll come out with a victory." -- delmarvanow.com

8. North East (4-4, 8) – The Indians have struggled on offense this season, reaching 50 points in just four contests.

13. Elkton (2-5, 13) – The Golden Elks still haven’t defeated an UCBAC opponent since their opening game against Rising Sun on Dec. 4.

01/12 -  Girls' Basketball Notebook

-- On Monday, Elkton stepped into top-ranked Fallston’s home gym and took the 2009 3A State Champion to the limit in a 50-43 loss. The Golden Elks, who play in the Susquehanna Division, previously lost to No. 2 Aberdeen and third-ranked Joppatowne by a combined 129-82. Against the Cougars, however, they held a two-point halftime advantage before being outscored 15-4 in the third quarter. “I think we went in there knowing that we could compete with them,” Elkton coach Lisa Delcollo said. “We came out playing man, and we never dropped man the whole way. We typically aren’t a man team, but I figured we had to step up our game to play with them and we did.” Fallston, the five-time defending UCBAC Champion, will compete in the same 2A East Region as the Elks in the postseason. -- cecilwhig.com

01/10 - Spotlight Players - Who were last week’s top players?

Girls’ Basketball:  Kerri Valladares, Elkton

The junior helped lift the Golden Elks to a 2-0 start in Susquehanna Division play. On Tuesday, she netted four points in a 53-22 home win over Harford Tech in which Elkton boasted 10 different scorers. Two days later, Valladares recorded a game-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 53-35 triumph over Havre de Grace. “Kerri is our decision maker and the leader on and off the court,” Golden Elks coach Lisa Delcollo said. “Everything develops from her, so she’s got everything on her shoulders as far as calling our plays. I think she does a good job delegating the responsibilities. She’s an awesome player to coach, and she makes it fun.” -- cecilwhig.com

01/09 - 'Energizer Bunny,' Ewell power teams

With the winter high school sports season heating up, the Daily Times would like to continue the tradition of honoring athletes of the week. Each week, from Friday to Thursday, a female and a male athlete whose achievements stand out will be selected. Coaches or parents are welcome to contact the Daily Times to nominate a player, and can do so by e-mail at rnisson@dmg. gannett.com, eholland@dmg.gannett.com or bpenserga@dmg.gannett.com.  This week's winners are basketball players Ashton Wheatley of the Salisbury School and Marquis Ewell of Wicomico. Wheatley averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds in two games this week. Salisbury School coach Calvin Burrell said Wheatley has been the engine for the Dragons this year. "She's like our Energizer Bunny -- we all wonder how she can maintain with all the running she does," he said. And for a guard who only stands 5-foot-7, Wheatley posses a strong leaping ability, Burrell said, strong enough to help her collect rebounds from bigger players. "For her size, she can really jump," he said. Ewell, who is one of only four seniors on the Wi-Hi squad, is the team's leading scorer, averaging 18 points. He is also averaging four rebounds. The guard bumped up his already impressive numbers by averaging 20 points in two games this week, in a loss Tuesday to Mardela and a victory Thursday over Pocomoke. "I don't want to say that we were surprised, because we knew he had some scoring ability," Wi-Hi coach Butch Waller said. "But he's been a pleasant surprise helping us out at the point guard position." Waller's squad came into the season "shallow" at the guard position, but Ewell has performed admirably in the role, splitting his time between the point and the off-guard positions. "He's been doing a pretty darn good job for us," Waller said. "He's our leading scorer, he gets the ball up the court against pressure, and he gets his team in the right set. He's got a great attitude, and he's pretty cool under pressure." -- delmarvanow.com

01/08 - Wicomico harnesses power of the press

Coming off of back-to-back losses, the Wicomico girls basketball team played inspired ball Thursday as they held normally high-powered Pocomoke to just five points in the first half in 44-31 victory. The Indians' full-court press caused havoc for the Warriors, forcing close to 20 turnovers over the first 16 minutes of the contest. "We win with our defense -- everybody knows that," Wi-Hi coach Willie Downing said. "We made a concerted effort to play a lot better defense than we have the last two games, and it paid off for us." Wicomico's effort on defense led directly to points several times throughout the game, as the Indians (7-3, 5-1 Bayside) trapped the Warriors (6-2, 3-2) in the back court and forced them into making bad decisions. "They have always had a pressure defense," Pocomoke coach Gail Gladding said. "I call it a kamikaze defense, where they just run at you and they hope that scares you enough that you throw the ball away. We had that problem -- we just threw the ball away too many times tonight." Part of the problem for Pocomoke was also the fact that they played three-quarters of the contest without their best player, Kiana Sturgis. Sturgis, the do-everything junior forward for the Warriors, apparently was absent during part of the Warriors' practice Wednesday. "She missed three-quarters of practice (Wednesday)," Gladding said, "so she missed three-quarters of the game (Thursday)." Even though she didn't enter the game until the fourth quarter, Sturgis still led her team in scoring with 10 points. When she entered the contest, the junior sparked a mini-rally, as the Warrior's went on a 16-4 run to open the quarter. However, the Indians, led by TaBre Woolford's game-high 16 points, had established a wide enough margin that their lead was never seriously threatened. "We lost our last two games, but we came back out with our heads up and were ready to play," Woolford said. "It's a good win for us, because everybody thought that we were going to get smashed. So we had to come out here and prove our point that we were going to win. It's a big achievement for us." -- delmarvanow.com

01/08 - Rising Sun snaps four-game skid

On Thursday, the Rising Sun girls’ basketball team snapped a four-game losing streak and left Bohemia Manor on a four-game skid of its own. The Tigers, who forced 53 turnovers, took the lead midway through the second quarter on the way to a 46-32 victory in Susquehanna Division action. “I think we just really wanted to win this game,” said Rising Sun sophomore Abby Hyland, who finished with eight points. “We hadn’t won one in a while, and we all really wanted to come in with some intensity and just finish with a good lead. We all tried really hard and put forth a lot of effort. Everybody hustled, and we made a lot of our shots.” The Tigers (2-6 overall, 1-1 division) used a spurt of nine straight points to hold an 11-5 advantage after the opening frame. However, the Eagles (2-4, 0-2) fought back with an 8-1 run to pull ahead 13-12 with four minutes, eight seconds to go before the break. That’s when Hyland and Rising Sun regained control of the contest – this time for good. She scored four of her team’s eight consecutive points in a quick swing, which was powered by a strong press, that put it back ahead, 20-13. “The biggest problem is our turnovers,” Bo Manor coach Lissy Dean said. “That’s the most crucial thing for us, is to try to control the ball and relax when we have it.” The Eagles, who started the season with two victories, haven’t won since a 41-32 triumph on Dec. 8 at Maurice J. Moyer Academy (Del.). The Tigers, meanwhile, garnered their only win prior to Thursday on Dec. 11 against visiting Tome. Sara McDermott led Rising Sun with 11 points, while Kelly Steen contributed eight points, seven steals and six rebounds and Alyssa Henry added seven points, six rebounds, six blocks and five steals. For Bo Manor, Becky Curtis finished with eight points and three boards, Brynae Goodley scored six points and Asia Lawrence (three steals, two assists) and Heather Hancharick each tallied five points. Lauren Price brought down six rebounds, and Jess Lloyd netted five steals, four boards and three assists. Both teams return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m., with the Eagles traveling to Elkton and the Tigers hosting Perryville. -- cecilwhig.com

01/06 - McQuaide lifts Elks to win

Elkton guard Erica McQuaide netted seven consecutive points to open the first quarter of Tuesday’s girls’ basketball contest with visiting Harford Tech. The senior set the tempo for a dominant performance by the Golden Elks, who boasted 10 different scorers in a 53-22 win over the Cobras to open Susquehanna Division play. “It felt really good, but it wasn’t just me,” said McQuaide, who finished with a game-high 10 points. “Kerri (Valladares) called great plays when we needed them, and everyone set good picks and had great passes, so we were set.” Elkton (4-3 overall, 1-0 division) held a 16-4 advantage after the opening quarter, thanks to both its balanced attack and stifling press. Perhaps more importantly, however, the Golden Elks never faded during the contest. They outscored Harford Tech (1-5, 0-1) in every quarter and put together a 20-point run that stretched from the end of the third frame well into the fourth. “(Coach Lisa Delcollo) always tells us that we have to start off strong, and it will set the tone for the rest of the game,” McQuaide said. “We did really well. We had good passing throughout the whole game. It just helped us take the win tonight.” Emily Dunn and Desiree Foye followed McQuaide with nine points apiece, and Renee Dunn netted five points. Lindsey White, Macy McCollum, Bria Travis and Valladares all scored four points, with White adding 15 rebounds and McCollum tallying eight boards and four assists. Tyffany Hicks (three points) and Symone Stewart (one point) rounded out the offense for a team favored early on to win its first lower-division title. “I was ecstatic,” Delcollo said of the effort. “I know my girls can do it, and I said before that we take each game as it comes. We started out with a tough schedule, and each game we’re out there giving 110 percent.” Brittany Chavis led the Cobras with seven points and seven rebounds, followed by Britney Barber with six points. 12/27 - 'Give Brooke the ball!' -- Wi-Hi guard wins cheers

In sports, attention is far to often singularly focused on the final score, how fast someone can run or jump. Yet sometimes an athlete stands out without registering statistics in those standard metrics. Their contributions to the team don't have a place on the scoresheet. But their effect on the squad is just as important as any of their teammates. The Wicomico girls basketball team's Brooke Kovach might not have the best jump shot in the world or play the most minutes, but she is a big part of the squad. While the sophomore guard has yet to score this season, she elicits a roar from the crowd whenever she enters the game. Parents and students can't help but cheer on Kovach, due in large part to what she has overcome to step onto the court. Kovach was born with Down syndrome and has gone through two heart surgeries due to complications from her condition. But through it all, the 17-year-old player's mother says her daughter refuses to slow down. "She loves basketball, and she loves hanging out with the girls," Tina Kovach said. "We have two great coaches that give her all the support and all the playing time [she could want.] We have great support here at the school."

Brooke's battle

According to the National Down Syndrome Society Web site, Brooke is one of more than 400,000 people who have the disorder in the United States. While symptoms and severity of impairment vary on an individual basis, the condition is caused by the presence of an extra copy of the 21st chromosome; most people only have two copies of the chromosome, but Brooke has three. The additional genetic material alters the course of development during pregnancy and results in the common characteristics associated with Down syndrome. Like many others with Down syndrome, Kovach has a rounded face, is short in stature and experiences a cognitive delay. People with Down syndrome also have an increased risk for congenital heart defects, which Brooke knows all to well, having had the heart surgeries. Although those obstacles might seem to be enormous, they have done little to slow the Kovach down. She attends regular education classes at Wicomico, and while she is older than most 10th graders, she is working toward graduation just like the rest of her classmates.

Game day

Even though she is still just a teenager, Kovach has overcome more adversity than most others face in a lifetime. Her experiences haven't jaded her outlook; instead, it is readily apparent that all of her battles off the court enrich the time she spends on it. At practice, Kovach is just another one of the girls, going through drills and running sprints side by side with her teammates. "She shows up and she works hard," Wi-Hi coach Willie Downing said. "She gets yelled at just like all the rest of the girls. Her parents don't expect us to cut her any slack. We do try and get her into every game, but she understands what her time is going to be." In a recent home contest against Crisfield, Wi-Hi built an early double-digit lead. Downing took the opportunity to give Kovach some significant playing time, and the sophomore didn't disappoint, as she was visible on both ends of the floor. On defense, Kovach always had her hands up. Stationed near the top of the key, Kovach pressed out on the ball, forcing it to the perimeter, while almost collecting a steal. On offense, Kovach floated into open space, waiting for teammates to swing her the ball. Kovach missed both of her shots and got called for traveling on a separate possession. After the game, she was undoubtedly her harshest critic. "I messed up," Kovach said. Even if she was not pleased with her performance, the Wi-Hi crowd loved every second of it. Each time Kovach entered the game, supporters shouted words of encouragement. And when Kovach nearly secured a rebound, there was an audible gasp from the crowd. "Everybody just roots for her," Tina Kovach said. "They get upset when the opposite side isn't very friendly. But there is not a parent here that doesn't support her, that doesn't holler, 'Give Brooke the ball.' It's just a good experience -- it's just wonderful." Although Brooke has been playing basketball for the better part of five years, one of her most memorable experience came just a few weeks back. "Before our game against Snow Hill, (Brooke) made two or three lay-ups in warm-ups and that was a big thing," Downing said. "For her, that's just like making lay-ups in a game. Our people and even people from Snow Hill all cheered for her." While those baskets didn't make an impact on the final score, there is no doubt the impact that Kovach has made on her teammates and those around her. "I've played ball with Brooke for a long time," Wi-Hi junior guard TaBre Woolford said. "Her dad was my first basketball coach, so it's like she's family. She calls my mom 'Mom,' and we love her. We don't let anyone take advantage of her, you know. You don't think that anybody like her would come out and play basketball. But we stick together and try to get her the ball to score a lot. We love her." -- delmarvanow.com

12/26 - Basketballers Hyland and Waters pour it on

With the winter high school sports season heating up, the Daily Times would like to continue the tradition of honoring athletes of the week. Each week, from Friday to Thursday, a female and a male athlete whose achievements stand out will be selected. Coaches or parents are welcome to contact the Daily Times to nominate a player, and can do so by e-mail at rnisson@dmg.gannett.com, eholland@dmg.gannett.com or bpenserga@dmg.gannett.com. This week's winners are basketball players Ashaneyia Hyland of Parkside and Ryan Waters of Snow Hill. Hyland, a senior guard, averaged 30 points in her last two games and notched her 1,000th career point Wednesday against Snow Hill. Even though she's become Parkside's most reliable offensive player -- leading the Bayside in scoring last year -- her true calling is on the other side of the ball, Rams coach Warren White said. He added that Hyland wants to break the school's steals record. "She loves playing defense," White said. "Her first two years, defense was what she did." White even credits Hyland's scoring explosion to her ball-hawking tendencies. "Her defense is her offense, creating points from turnovers," he said. Waters averaged 24.5 points in his last two games, including 24 in a 51-43 victory over Parkside on Wednesday. Snow Hill coach Allen Miller said he's always known Waters that can fill the basket, but Waters has worked on other skills, such as rebounding and making the extra pass, which have made him a more well-rounded player this season. "We've known he can score, but he's really stepped up his rebounding for us," Miller said. -- delmarvanow.com

12/18 - Wicomico girls improve to 4-0 in Bayside

The Wicomico girls basketball kept its perfect Bayside record alive, cruising to a 69-23 victory against undermanned and overmatched Crisfield on Thursday. "We wanted a lot of people to play who normally don't get a lot of time," said Wicomico coach Willie Downing, who saw nine of his players score. "We wanted to work on a few things, and I think we did pretty well considering a lot of the girls aren't starters. We interchanged a little bit, and everybody worked well together." The Indians set the tone from the opening whistle, as Ariel Duffy tipped the jump ball to teammate Jashe' Wright, who took two dribbles before scoring an uncontested layup. Wi-Hi (5-1, 4-0 Bayside) would go on to score 15 more points to open the first quarter before the Crabbers (0-4 0-3 Bayside) got on the board with a 3-pointer from Zohnnae Pollard. It wouldn't get much better for a Crabbers squad that only had six players in uniform, as they finished the first quarter down 21-6. It was more of the same in the second and throughout the remainder of the contest, as the Crabbers struggled on offense and defense. Crisfield would dribble away most of the 30-second shot clock on offense before heaving a long-distance shot. Wi-Hi was led by Wright, a senior forward, who poured in 16 points, and sophomore guard Brianna Jones, who had 15 points. Pollard led the Crabbers with 15 points, all of which came from behind the three-point line. "It's not always about scoring points -- it's your defensive hustle on the floor," Downing said. "They did a good job tonight. We worked a lot on our man-to-man defense. We guarded the passing lanes like we are suppose to, so I was happy with that tonight -- it really made us look good." -- delmarvanow.com

12/17 - Story’s double-double propels NE to first win

Meghan Fersch brought down eight rebounds, followed by Katie Spence with five boards and Rachel Clewer with four rebounds and five steals. Lexi Stevens scored six points for North East, which led 18-8 at halftime. The Indians return to action on Friday at 7 p.m., when they host the Bayside Conference’s Queen Anne’s. -- cecilwhig.com

12/16 - Harford Christian 36, Rising Sun 33

Kelly Steen led the Tigers (1-3) with 17 points and seven rebounds, Jordin Newby brought down 10 rebounds and Alyssa Henry contributed nine rebounds and eight points. 12/15 - Bennett puts up a wall

In a game that took over two hours to complete, the James M. Bennett girls basketball team weathered a fourth quarter comeback by Parkside and numerous turnovers to win their fourth contest of the season, 62-48. Bennett was led by senior guard Raquel Weeks, who scored a game-high 26 points, and was a clear catalyst for the Clippers squad. "[Raquel] is the best point guard I have seen in a while," said Darren Rogers, the Clippers head coach. "She changes speeds really well, she passes the ball really well. We are working on her defense, but everything on offense is exceptional." It turns out that Weeks had some extra motivation flowing through her system as she played in her first game back in the Rams gym. "I did play here [at Parkside] last year and I switched schools," explained Weeks. "I just wanted to come out here and show what I can do, so that was big motivation for me." Weeks was a force on the court, from the opening tip-off to the final whistle; she used her speed and agility to get inside of the lane and finish. "She took the ball to the rack really well tonight," said Rogers of his guard. "Usually we like to shoot from outside, but they did a good job of adjusting their defense and played us outside. So we just took the ball inside, and they were in foul trouble for most of the game." Both teams had trouble with fouls, there were a plethora of violations on Monday night. From travels, to double-dribbles, holds, hacks and three-second violations, hardly a possession went by without a whistle blowing. "The officials called everything tonight, and we just have to tighten up," said Rogers. "Our defense was pretty good, but mostly we have to worry about our traveling and try to tighten that up some." Entering the fourth quarter Bennett held a healthy 42-33 lead, but the contest tightened up when the Rams sliced into the nine point advantage. Teja Sykes scored the opening four points in the final frame for the Rams, to bring her team within five. On Parkside's next possession after a Bennett turnover, Paige Jones collected an offensive rebound and scored from close range to make it a one possession game. However the game would turn for good on the next trip down the court as Genesis Manuel collected a missed Clipper shot. Without dribbling, the sophomore took the rebound and put a shot back up, scoring to give Bennett a five point edge. On the ensuing inbound Parkside turned the ball over after a traveling violation, the offending player was upset with the call and slammed the ball down drawing a technical foul. Weeks stepped to the free throw line and converted her two attempts pumping Bennett's lead to 46-39. From that point on Weeks and her teammates took over, cruising to a 62-48 victory. "I had faith in my team that we could pull it out, which we did," said Weeks. "That is what we came here to do. We have ups and downs, ups and downs, but luckily at the end in the fourth quarter we finished on top." -- delmarvanow.com

12/11 - Holly Grove wins sixth straight

The Holly Grove girls basketball team won its sixth straight game to open the season, holding off a late fourth-quarter rally by Wicomico to secure a 45-40 victory Thursday. After trailing most of the game, the Indians (2-1) had a chance to cut Holly Grove's lead to one possession late in the fourth quarter. Off a turnover, Wi-Hi's Nakia Wilkerson-Cottman raced down the court, making a layup while getting fouled to cut Holly Grove's advantage to 44-40. However, Wilkerson-Cottman could not convert her free-throw attempt, and Holly Grove (6-0) grabbed the rebound, all but assuring its victory. "We knew coming in here it was going to be a hard-fought game," Holly Grove coach Ed Widdowson said. "But I thought our girls stayed focus. I thought Wi-Hi played a good game, and we just happened to be the lucky ones to get the win." For most of the night, Holly Grove seemed to be firing on all cylinders, running an effective offense, forcing several turnovers on defense and hitting open shots. The Eagles were especially effective running their high-low post offense, creating mismatches near the basket with their forwards Fellissa Selby and Alyssa Reese. Selby and Reese paced the Eagles' offense with 12 and eight points, respectively. "We try to get one person up and one person low," Selby said. "We just try to keep switching the ball to try and confuse the defense. We want to get open looks so we have easy layups. That way, we don't have to battle to get every shot." Holly Grove's defense performed admirable, as well. The Eagles' matchup two-three zone stifled the Indians' flow and forced Wi-Hi into taking many wild shots, along with creating numerous turnovers. "I thought our defense was what won the game," Widdowson said. "In the first half, they couldn't make the adjustments to score on us. They made the adjustments along the way to find ways to score, but they also allowed us to continue to score, and I believe that was the reason why we won." -- cecilwhig.com

12/09  - Rising Sun girls struggle in season opener

The Rising Sun girls’ basketball team returned just one starter from last season’s 16-win campaign. With an inexperienced unit, the Tigers knew they would be heavily tested from the onset, opening against the Chesapeake Division’s North Harford. The end result? Rising Sun struggled mightily to solve the Lady Hawks’ stifling press in a 64-13 home loss on Tuesday. “They played good with aggressiveness,” first-year Tigers coach David Henry said, “but they didn’t know how to do the press breaks, and there were some plays that we really got beat on. The press break was where North Harford got a lot of its turnovers and kind of took the momentum from the game.” Rising Sun (0-1) experienced a promising start on defense in the opening frame, holding the Lady Hawks (1-1) to without a basket for the first three minutes, 10 seconds. However, once North Harford’s shots started to fall, the Tigers simply couldn’t contend. They trailed 16-3 after the first quarter, 31-7 at halftime and were outscored 33-6 in the second half, during which they endured a 28-0 run. “Our offense, we were able to set up in the first quarter pretty good,” Henry said. “After that, it kind of fell apart. There’s some things we need to work on with plays, make sure we’re holding our positions, make sure we know what our roles are, and we have to work on our endurance, too. You could see we got a little tired at the end. “They did play their hearts out. I’m proud of them with how hard they actually played.” Kelly Steen led Rising Sun with four points, followed by Alyssa Henry (10 rebounds) with three points. Jordin Newby brought down a team-high 12 boards and joined Sara McDermott and Emily Cox with two points apiece. Ten different scorers contributed for the Lady Hawks, including Haley Ford with 12 points and Rhiannan Coogle and Rachel Cocorus each with 10.
