If Larry Savage was up for an Academy Award he would likely be placed in the Best Supporting Actor category. He has been a contributor on the famed Boo Williams Elite teams playing with star-rated recruits James McAdoo and Dorian Finney-Smith. At Bishop O Connell, Larry played alongside McDonald's All-American and North Carolina recruit Kendall Marshall who was voted Private School Player of the Year in Division I. Savage carries the tag of an athletic forward who has a power forwards game, but a small forward size. He's been posted inside to help rebound and do the dirty work. However, Savage has shown that he can play on the wing in addition to throwing down an acrobatic dunk. Recently, Savage made the decision to leave the high profiled Boo Williams organization to join the up-and-coming Virginia Assault AAU basketball team. While Savage currently holds offers from VCU, Wagner, Robert Morris, and Delaware, he feels more court time is crucial to having a big summer and getting more recognition. "I wasn't getting that much playing time (with Boo Williams) and I want college coaches to see me," Savage said. "Also, my ability to play on the wing is another reason why I switched to Virginia Assault. I'm starting at the 3 position instead of playing inside." The move to the Virginia Assault was a Godsend for their head coach Jerry McFarland who says Savage will elevate his team to another level. "He is the player that takes us from a good AAU program to a national contending program," McFarland said. "He is an athletic wing that is developing handles and a jump shot. I think he just needed the time on the floor as a wing. He hasn't been playing the wing for long, so there is so much he is learning right now. I think if he keeps doing what makes him a good player (rebounding, defending and using his athletic ability to make plays) while working on the things he needs as a wing, he is going to be a big time steal for some college program. He brings a "WOW" factor that a lot of kids don't have.” As a starting forward for Bishop O'Connell, Savage help lead the Knights to the Division I State Private championship. In the finals, Savage had eight points but more importantly, held high scoring Blue Ridge guard Malick Kone to only five second half points which included a late-game breakaway dunk with only a minute to go. Kone had scored 10 first quarter points. "I thought Larry was unbelievable defensively," Bishop O Connell coach Joe Wooten said. "Larry was right there in his face. (Kone) is a great player. Our statement was we wanted to wear him down and make him work for his points." "Coach gave me the assignment of me guarding (Kone) and I just used my length to contain his jump shot because he was knocking it down from mid-range," Savage said. "Coach just wanted me to contest it and that's what I did." Winning consecutive titles will be difficult with the graduation of Marshall who was MVP of the title game. "It's going to take players like me, Jordan (Burgess) and James (Bourne) to step up and just play aggressive every play," Savage said. "The WCAC is one of the toughest conferences in America from team-to-team hands down. It gets us ready for states." -- vaassaultbasketball.org
