However, he was just one cog in the suffocating Crusaders’ defense that set the tone early in the game. ECA, which jumped out to a 28-6 first-quarter lead, did not allow a single field goal in the opening frame. “Our defense was able to cut down on the passing lane, which allowed us to trap the ball and led to steals,” Crusaders coach Bill Smith said. ECA’s defensive dominance continued well into the second quarter, as Towle didn’t register a field goal for the first three minutes, 35 seconds. “We try to close in on shots,” Smith said. “We tried to hurt them from the outside, then we have our big guys rebound and get the ball up.” Offensively, the Crusaders, who led 44-17 at the half, received major contributions from Alex Revell with12 points, four rebounds and three assists, and Isaac Emory who added 11 points and four assists. Reserves C.J. Dunston and Tyler Beiler added five points apiece for ECA, which watched its bench produce 22 points. “We did everything well,” guard Ben Wolfe said. “Offense, defense, cutting down on passing. Our defense was key to our offense by sending the ball up and creating scoring chances.” With the victory, the Crusaders improve to 16-3 as the postseason looms. “We hope to finish strong and get a high seed so we have a home game,” Smith said. “We would like to have a good end for our seniors who played really well here tonight.” -- cecilwhig.com January 2010 01/30 - HOLLY GROVE 44, SALISBURY CHRISTIAN 35 A.J. 01/29 - Long, Wolfe propel Crusaders to victory David Long and Ben Wolfe scored 10 points apiece as Elkton Christian Academy defeated visiting West Nottingham Academy 45-17 in boys’ basketball action on Thursday. The Crusaders (14-3) jumped out to an early 22-2 lead due to their opportunistic 2-3 zone defense, forcing eight first-quarter turnovers and several rushed shots. “We are playing really good team defense, especially when we shift and rotate,” Long said. “We are really good at our 2-3 zone because we have been playing together forever. We just have that feel.” ECA forced 24 turnovers in the contest, with guard C.J. Dunston leading the way with six steals. “We’re swarming (when we are on defense),” Crusaders coach Bill Smith said. “We trap everything in the corners. We lay back in our 2-3 zone, but as soon as we see a corner, we’re trapping, so that is just what we teach. We kill the passing lanes and just play good fundamental basketball. That is how you win games.” ECA controlled the glass at both ends of the court, holding a 45-21 rebounding advantage. Austin Snyder (eight rebounds) and Tyler Beiler (seven rebounds) led the team, while Long added six boards and Alex Revell (six points) and Jon Connell (four points) each contributed five rebounds. The Crusaders pulled down 18 offensive rebounds, leading to 12 second-chance points. All 12 players on the ECA roster chipped in for the victory, with Snyder and Dunston supplying their team-leading performances in reserve roles, while 6-foot-5 back-up center Nick Compton recorded four blocks in the second half to lead the Crusaders. “It is good for them to get in,” Smith said. “My bench is a really supportive group of guys. They have been with us and supported us in some tight matches, so it’s good to get them out there.” The Rams were led by Jin Park (four points, four steals), Chris Timme (eight rebounds, four points) and Dorvil Gabriel (five rebounds four points). The Jaguars (7-2) entered the final frame with a 35-27 lead, but a 8-0 run by the Dragons (7-1) during the period cut Salisbury Christian's advantage to just two points with a little more than a minute to play. The Jaguars were able to convert their free throws in the final seconds and secured a big defensive rebound to seal the victory. "The boys played hard tonight," Salisbury Christian coach Rob Matthews said. "We started to fold at the end, but we held on. It got scary. I was a little worried for a while, but overall it was a great win for our school." After taking a 7-5 lead in the first quarter, the Jaguars fell into a slump as they were outscored 9-2 by the Dragons to finish the frame. Salisbury Christian's defense would pick the squad up in the second and third quarters as they held Salisbury School to just 12 total points during the 16-minute span. The Jaguars' offense was able to capitalize on their defensive stand, as they patiently passed the ball, waiting for an open look at the basket. Junior forward Niklas Boehmer paced the Jaguar attack with 14 points, all of which came in or around the paint. "We played without one of our best players tonight, but Niklas stepped up," Matthews said. "He played a real good basketball game. He's from Germany, and we've been working with him because he was a little soft, but tonight it was a coming out game for him. We sort of unleashed the German." Boehmer was a force on the boards, as well, as he and his teammates did a good job of limiting the Dragons to one shot per possession. "I thought we did a real good job on the boards tonight," Matthews said. "We've been working on that, as well. The first few games we were really soft, but the boys are really coming on now. We've got better basketball ahead of us." The Dragons' Hussan Guran scored a game-high 15 points. -- delmarvanow.com 01/06 - ECA 68, Tall Oaks Classical 43 David Long recorded 18 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Crusaders, while Alex Revell added 15 rebounds and 11 points, Jon Connell chipped in 10 points and 10 rebounds, Ben Wolfe contributed eight assists and five points and Isaac Emery netted 13 points. Chincoteague's Chad Haugh led his team with 14 points. -- delmarvanow.com December 2009 12/29 - Local contests carry intrigue While most of the attention in Cecil County the next two days will be on the Green-N-Gold Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Cecil College, I’m intrigued by G4 Madness in Aberdeen. The tournament pits four of the UCBAC’s best teams against each other with the host Eagles facing Edgewood at 7 tonight. Aberdeen is 1-6. However, slow starts in the past haven’t prevented the Eagles from claiming their annual place in the conference championship every year since its inception in 2003-04. Top-ranked Aberdeen has faced just one UCBAC team this year, edging Fallston, of the Susquehanna Division, 62-60 on Dec 14. The Cougars, meanwhile, could provide some insight into this tournament, having faced three of the four teams. Fallston also fell to No. 3 Joppatowne (4-1) 60-55 on Dec. 11 and 52-41 to No. 5 Havre de Grace (5-0) on Dec. 18. The Cougars were scheduled to play No. 4 Edgewood (4-1) on Dec. 21, but the contest was postponed due to inclement weather. All four teams will battle during Chesapeake Division play, but this week’s tournament will provide our first look into how they stack up. Of course, the Green-N-Gold carries plenty of intrigue of its own. With Tome entering the mix for the first time, seven of the county’s eight teams will be on display. The Titans open against Bohemia Manor, which earned a 63-34 victory at Tome on Dec. 4. While the Titans likely won’t earn a win in this tournament, it brings up one interesting thought. Could we ever see a Cecil County Championship at Cecil College? Think about it. According to the Maryland Public Secondary School Athletic Association, teams are allowed 20 regular games plus two holiday tournament contests or 19 and three. If the five public schools agreed to schedule just 19 games, they’d be allowed to play in an eight-team tournament. If West Nottingham Academy was willing to play in the Green-N-Gold in place of Queen Anne’s next year, Seahawks Athletic Director Ed Durham could then run an official county championship every holiday season. No more would there be a Green Bracket Champion or a Gold Bracket winner. Instead, local squads would battle over three days to discover which is the best in the county. Of course, we don’t have a county championship, but there will be eight basketball games in North East during the next two days involving seven local teams. Hopefully, those contests provide plenty of storylines to keep people talking until the regular season heats up in two months. -- cecilwhig.com 12/19 - HOLLY GROVE 88, CHESAPEAKE CHRISTIAN 23 Colin Cunningham led the Eagles with 15 points, Vince Lusby scored 11 points, and Bryan Selby added 10. -- delmarvanow.com

Andre Moore provided a spark for the Tigers with a team-high 13 points in their 32-28 win over the Titans in non-conference boys’ basketball action. “All of us knew that we had to step it up,” Moore said. “We were a little nervous at first, but eventually, we were able to calm down and gain confidence. That allowed us to get into a rhythm.” Reserve Nick Smith also came up big for Rising Sun (1-1) with seven points, and coach Mike Miller said playing the underclassmen now might prove valuable later in the season. “We had three guys out of the starting lineup, so that kind of hurt us,” Miller said. “The advantage is that the younger guys are going to see a lot of action. That’s going to build their confidence, which clearly it did. In a way, this is going to benefit us. When it becomes stretch time, our younger guys will be just as confident as our older guys.” With the Tigers leading 23-19 midway through the fourth quarter, Smith scored five unanswered points to give his team a nine-point lead. Tome followed with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 28-26 with just over a minute remaining. After a battle on the floor, Moore was fouled, sending him to the line. He made both free throws to give Rising Sun a four-point lead, before the Titans’ Barry Gregg (16 points) made a field goal to close the gap to two with less than 30 seconds remaining. Tome had a chance to tie the game with 17 seconds left but couldn’t capitalize, which set the stage for another pair of converted foul shots by Moore to seal the victory. “I was really nervous before those free throws,” Moore said. “I just focused on getting into my rhythm and making them for my team. I was able to get a good stroke on them.” -- cecilwhig.com 12/13 - HOLLY GROVE 65, CHINCOTEAGUE 57 The Eagles' Pat Reese had 19 points and 10 rebounds Friday, and A.J. We are pushing their ball-handlers to the sidelines, cutting down where the pass can go.” The Crusaders’ defense dominated the first half, forcing 15 turnovers and shutting out the Lions in the first quarter before jumping out to a 35-5 halftime lead. It’s the second time in three games the Crusaders held a 30-point advantage at the break – ECA led West Nottingham Academy 34-4 at intermission on Thursday. “I think the reason our first halves have been so good lately is because we always come out with good intensity,” Smith said. “We’ve always been hyped up before the game, and coach (Bill Dale) tells us that our intensity impacts how well we play.” Smith scored 16 of her game-high 22 points in the first half. “Shy has really been unselfish with the ball. It’s unbelievable,” Dale said. “Her scoring average could be higher. She’s accepted that everybody needs to be involved with the offense for us to be a complete. It’s really helped out a lot.” Morgante was the only other player in double figures with 11 points for ECA, and Lauren Frey added eight points and dished out seven assists. The Crusaders’ home game against Fairwinds on Thursday has been canceled. -- cecilwhig.com 02/01 - A shooter’s touch Elkton Christian Academy guard Brandi Morgante opened her team’s scoring by connecting on a 3-point attempt. Then, she hit another. And another after that. All told, the senior recorded a career-high 25 points on the strength of a 6-for-10 performance from long range to lift the Crusaders to a 63-38 girls’ basketball victory over visiting Harford Christian on Friday. “They were double-teaming Shy (Smith) inside, so they were leaving the outside wide open, and I could shoot without being covered,” said Morgante, who scored the Crusaders’ first 11 points and netted 14 total in the opening frame. Morgante’s stellar start helped ECA (15-3) jump ahead 19-8 after one quarter. However, with the home team in foul trouble, the Eagles (9-6) used a 14-4 run to close the gap to five points at the break. “Our starters had to go on the bench,” Morgante said. “When they came back in, they looked focused.” The Crusaders played with a new-found intensity in the third quarter, as well. Senior forward Kealey Planck garnered seven of her 14 points in a frame that saw Harford Christian outscored 22-2, ending any hopes of a comeback for a squad that previously upended Bohemia Manor, Perryville and Rising Sun this season. Planck added 16 rebounds for a double-double, along with four assists, one steal and one block. Despite facing constant double coverage, Smith (two assists, two blocks, one steal) also finished with a double-double, highlighted by 13 points and 13 boards. “If there’s two people on her, that means someone is always open, so it helps our game a lot,” said Morgante, who contributed four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Lauren Frey tallied eight points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds for ECA, while Leslie Stalnaker ended with four rebounds, three points and one steal. The Eagles were led by Courtney Grant and Susan Swehla with seven points apiece. -- cecilwhig.com January 2010 01/30 - For Salisbury Christian girls, a 'huge win' The top two girls basketball teams in the Peninsula Athletic Christian Conference hit the court Friday night, as Salisbury Christian never trailed against Holly Grove en route to a 38-29 victory. Sophomore Greta Downes scored a game-high 15 points to pace the Jaguars' offense, helping Salisbury Christian deal Holly Grove their first conference loss. "It's a huge win," said Erin Morris, Salisbury Christian head coach. "It's exciting, but we are going to continue to keep working hard. These girls are excellent workers, they push themselves so hard. They have been stepping up their level of play every day, and tonight was a great example of that and we're very proud of them." Sophomore guard Rachel Smith got the Jaguars offense rolling in the first quarter, scoring nine points in the opening eight minutes. Salisbury Christian finished the first period with a 14-5 lead. The Jaguars were able to add to their advantage in the second quarter, due in large part to the play of Downes -- who scored six points in the period -- even though they committed 10 turnovers. "She did great," said Morris of her starting forward. "Since day one, she has come out pumped and ready for the season. She will do anything you ask of her and she will do it in an excellent way." After taking a 21-11 lead into halftime, the Jaguars (12-2, 3-0 PACC) continued to have trouble holding on to the ball in the third quarter as they would only score three points in the frame. That allowed Holly Grove (14-3, 5-1) to get back into the contest; they would enter the final frame trailing 24-17. The Eagles would further cut into the Jaguars' margin as Hannah Goldsborough hit a three-point shot to open the fourth quarter, slimming Salisbury Christian's lead to four. However, that would be as close as the Eagles would come, as the Jaguars hit their shots down the stretch. "We still have to play them again," Morris said. "But right now we are undefeated in our conference and in first place, so this was a big win for us." -- cecilwhig.com 01/29 - ECA dominates West Nottingham Elkton Christian Academy dominated the first half, including a stretch of 32 straight points, to rout visiting West Nottingham Academy 48-19 in girls’ basketball action on Thursday. After the teams exchanged baskets in the first minute, ECA’s defense took control, forcing 17 turnovers and holding the Rams to under 10 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. “I think our 2-1-2 (zone) defense worked well for us tonight, and they didn’t get inside much,” said Crusaders senior Lauren Frey, who recorded eight points, six rebounds and four steals. “We played the outside well, too. We didn’t want them to have an easy shot.” The turnovers and missed baskets let ECA (14-3) get into its transition offense, which led to six fast-break buckets during the stretch, and junior Shy Smith said an early change in the defense allowed the Crusaders to clog the passing lanes. “We always play hard on defense. We stated out with a 2-3 before moving to a 2-1-2,” Smith said. “Our defense worked hard and looked for their passes, and we were able to get steals.” ECA’s 32-point run spanned 15 minutes and was not stopped until the final 30 seconds of the second quarter when WNA’s Summer Bottomly made a jumper to make the score 34-4 at the break. Smith paced the Crusaders with a game-high 18 points to go with eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks, while Brandi Morgante added six poitns, five steals and three assists, Kealey Planck contributed seven rebounds and three steals and Destiny Miller and Leslie Stalnaker hauled in six boards apiece. “It does a lot for our confidence,” Smith said. “Especially, the great defense we played and how our offense was scoring. It’s going to give us a lot of confidence that if we play like this, we can compete with anybody in the state.” ECA continued to increase its lead into the third quarter, outscoring the Rams 6-2 for a 40-6 lead. That allowed ECA coach Bill Dale to rest his starters and check out his bench in game situations. “Getting more people in the game is very important because at the end of the year when we’re looking at the playoffs, we want everybody to have much playing time as possible,” he said. “They showed tonight they need a little more time, but they still have come along well since the first day of practice. It’ll help us in the long run.” Amber Barnes scored a team-high five points for the Rams (3-6), with Sydney Coleman pulling down eight rebounds. -- cecilwhig.com

That’s when coach Lissy Dean sat her team down and implored the Eagles to regain any precious momentum they let slip away. Bo Manor followed its leader’s instructions, as it netted the first 12 points of a dominant second quarter and rolled to a 45-19 non-conference girls’ basketball victory over the visiting Titans on Thursday. “I think we just had the realization that they’re coming back, and we want this game,” Eagles junior Brynae Goodley said. “We want it so bad, and we’ve wanted it for weeks.” That’s because after starting the season with back-to-back wins, Bo Manor hadn’t tasted success since Dec. 8, a stretch of seven games. During the skid, the team hadn’t managed more than 32 points in any contest. Against Tome, the Eagles (3-7) topped that number midway through the third quarter. “(Ending the streak) means that we did so much better than last year,” Goodley said. “It means that we’re showing improvement and we’re coming up in the county. We’re showing everyone what we know.” And what everyone knows is that just 10 games into the season, Bo Manor has already topped its win total from last winter. To do so, it used a 10-2 run to open Thursday’s contest, a 14-2 spurt that spanned the entire second frame and a 12-0 stretch to close the game. Junior Jess Lloyd, who finished with seven assists, six points and four steals, credited that sustained offensive production to the team’s tight effort on the other side of the ball. “I think our help defense caused a lot of turnovers,” she said. “Our defense was our offense.” Goodley, meanwhile, registered her third-straight double-digit performance with 13 points along with four assists, three rebounds and two blocks for the Eagles, who host Havre de Grace tonight in Susquehanna Division competition. Asia Lawrence contributed nine points, five rebounds and three blocks, while Heather Hancharick (seven steals, four rebounds) and Bea Ngigi joined Lloyd by netting six points apiece. Coaches or parents are welcome to contact the Daily Times to nominate a player, and can do so by e-mail at rnisson@dmg. gannett.com, eholland@dmg.gannett.com or bpenserga@dmg.gannett.com. This week's winners are basketball players Ashton Wheatley of the Salisbury School and Marquis Ewell of Wicomico. Wheatley averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds in two games this week. Salisbury School coach Calvin Burrell said Wheatley has been the engine for the Dragons this year. "She's like our Energizer Bunny -- we all wonder how she can maintain with all the running she does," he said. And for a guard who only stands 5-foot-7, Wheatley posses a strong leaping ability, Burrell said, strong enough to help her collect rebounds from bigger players. "For her size, she can really jump," he said. Ewell, who is one of only four seniors on the Wi-Hi squad, is the team's leading scorer, averaging 18 points. He is also averaging four rebounds. The guard bumped up his already impressive numbers by averaging 20 points in two games this week, in a loss Tuesday to Mardela and a victory Thursday over Pocomoke. "I don't want to say that we were surprised, because we knew he had some scoring ability," Wi-Hi coach Butch Waller said. "But he's been a pleasant surprise helping us out at the point guard position." Waller's squad came into the season "shallow" at the guard position, but Ewell has performed admirably in the role, splitting his time between the point and the off-guard positions. "He's been doing a pretty darn good job for us," Waller said. "He's our leading scorer, he gets the ball up the court against pressure, and he gets his team in the right set. He's got a great attitude, and he's pretty cool under pressure." -- delmarvanow.com 01/08 - Elkton Christian 45, Towle 20 Shy Smith led the Crusaders (10-1) with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block, followed by Kealey Planck with 12 points, six steals and three rebounds, Lauren Frey with eight points, two assists and two steals, Kelsey Timmons with six boards and Brandi Morgante with five assists and two steals. The sophomore recorded a game-high in points and steals, collecting 20 and 13, respectively, for the Jaguars. "Our defense has been working really hard, and that is a key to a lot of our success," Salisbury Christian coach Erin Morris said. "Our point guard, Rachel Smith, did an amazing job of putting pressure on the ball. She touches almost every pass that goes by her or near her. She had 13 steals, but it seemed like she had more than that." Smith and the Jaguars took control of the game right off the opening jump ball. Sam Seifert, who had 15 points, won the toss, touching it forward to her teammate Emily Mills. Mills gained possession of the ball before shoveling a pass to Smith, who converted the opening layup. Smith extended the Jaguars' lead to 12-0 later in the first, stealing the ball from a Worcester Prep player before racing down the court and scoring another layup. Salisbury Christian (3-1) held a 19-3 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 37-7 at the end of the half. The Mallards' offensive struggles continued in the second half, as Smith's and the Jaguars' pressure was just too much to overcome. "We put a lot of pressure on the ball, and we move quickly," Morris said. "They have been working really hard to try and limit the amount of shots the other teams take, and I thought we did a really good job of that tonight." -- delmarvanow.com 12/17 - Story’s double-double propels NE to first win Madison Story recorded 13 rebounds, 12 points, eight steals and two blocks to lift North East to its first girls’ basketball win of the season, 39-19 over host Tome on Wednesday. Off a turnover, Wi-Hi's Nakia Wilkerson-Cottman raced down the court, making a layup while getting fouled to cut Holly Grove's advantage to 44-40. However, Wikerson-Cottman could not convert her free-throw attempt, and Holly Grove (6-0) grabbed the rebound, all but assuring its victory. "We knew coming in here it was going to be a hard-fought game," Holly Grove coach Ed Widdowson said. "But I thought our girls stayed focus. I thought Wi-Hi played a good game, and we just happened to be the lucky ones to get the win." For most of the night, Holly Grove seemed to be firing on all cylinders, running an effective offense, forcing several turnovers on defense and hitting open shots. The Eagles were especially effective running their high-low post offense, creating mismatches near the basket with their forwards Fellissa Selby and Alyssa Reese. Selby and Reese paced the Eagles' offense with 12 and eight points, respectively. "We try to get one person up and one person low," Selby said. "We just try to keep switching the ball to try and confuse the defense. We want to get open looks so we have easy layups. That way, we don't have to battle to get every shot." Holly Grove's defense performed admirable, as well. The Eagles' matchup two-three zone stifled the Indians' flow and forced Wi-Hi into taking many wild shots, along with creating numerous turnovers. "I thought our defense was what won the game," Widdowson said. "In the first half, they couldn't make the adjustments to score on us. They made the adjustments along the way to find ways to score, but they also allowed us to continue to score, and I believe that was the reason why we won." -- cecilwhig.com 12/10 - GUNSTON DAY 43, SALISBURY SCHOOL 29 Ashton Wheatley led the Dragons with 13 points, 17 rebounds and eight steals, and Sydney Johnson had 10 points. -- delmarvanow.com 12/09 - Elkton Christian 48, Salem County (N.J.)
